Well, maybe “maul” isn’t the politically correct word there but at times that is just what itseemed. A mauling. The North Country Mavericks, led by Jada Sudbrack and Mickayla Johnson, whupped up on the M-Ettes 25-16 in the first game of the match setting the stage for the next four games. Again, Sudbrack led the charge with Johnson, Delaney Beil, Bailey Funk, Tatum Moore, Casity Boucher and Payton Chopper filling in the gaps making super digs, great passing, monster blocks and thundering kills. This wasn’t your grannies' volleyball, folks....
The drive from Glasgow, Mont. to Laconia, N.H. covers 2,170 miles - 33 hours, for the speed trap-wary traveler. For Ryan Padden, a 2015 Nashua High School graduate and current Tier III Junior Hockey forward for the EHL's New England Wolves, the haul is but a melodic trill in the first movement of his Symphony on Ice. Padden was first recruited by Wolves' head coach and GM Andrew Trimble in mid-2014 at the USA Hockey U18 National Tournament. Though offered a place on Trimble's roster, Padden...
No amount of rain, muck, or wind could deter the Scotties from the task set before them in Havre on Oct. 3. The varsity boys finished second for the second straight week, falling victim to Fergus County's dazzling race, while the girls strode to a middle-of-the-pack result - third out of five teams. In the boys' race, Fergus' top five totaled just ten points above the minimum fifteen en route to a 48-point victory. The Glasgow boys, though their tally was near triple the winners', turned in a...
A soft September breeze whistled through Fort Peck as young men and women, bedecked in myriad, wild-colored singled, lined up across the Kiwanis Park grass. They crouched low, awaiting the starting pistol's crack. The Scottie boys, riding a three-meet first place streak, and the Scottie girls, on a two-meet run of their own, gritted their teeth, determined to hold fast to the attitude of invincibility through self-improvement which has defined their season thus far. "It was a fast one," said...
A winless Glasgow squad traveled west last Friday to meet the undefeated Eagles of Fairfield. Though they fought to annul the specious indicators which pointed to an impending defeat - comparative lacks of experience, size, and victories - the Scotties failed to translate that effort into a victory, and continue their battle for the season's first tartan W. The Scotties, undeterred by last week's shutout loss which saw a quarterback change and general disarray among personnel, were buoyed in...
It was a weekend full of experiences and opportunities for the GHS volleyball team and while it doesn't seem all that successful on paper, the girls learned some valuable team lessons and also earned some team pride. They learned to overcome adversity and still give teams a run for their money (they lost in three to both Kindred and Baker during pool play) and on the flip side, pulled out some amazing feats against Bismarck Century, the equivalent of a Montana AA team. Imagine 5'5 throwing...
Although fighting a bout with what she thought was stomach flu, North Country Mavericks sophomore Jada Sudbrack had a stellar game which started off with her hitting two KWAs, a normal point and a BWA in the first minute and a half of play. Yikes, friends, it was something to see! Of the Mavericks' 22 total kills Jada had 12 of them. She also led the team in blocked shots with two of the team’s five blocks. That first game was a good game with both sides playing very well indeed, but the Mavericks came up a bit short on the scoreboard, l...
For Chase Hughes, the weekend was normal - meets in Frazer on Sept. 17 and Sidney the following day afforded him a dyad of opportunities to better his PR and challenge his fellow Scotties to do the same. For his team, though, and its sister squad one and the same, Thursday and Friday's competitions marked a decisive stride into the beating heart of an increasingly promising season. "We're looking pretty good," said Hughes, "we're all healthy, all good." Thursday saw five Scotties - Emily...
Chalk up two more victories for the Scottie volleyball team. After facing conference foes Poplar and Malta last week. Those matches concluded the first round of conference play and the Scotties are currently on top of the 2-B District. All teams play each other one more time before the District tournament but seeding in that tournament is important so each match is important. At home on Thursday the Scotties worked hard for a three-game victory over Poplar, going 25-18, 25-18, 25-12. Tenacious...
The new North Country Lady Mavericks traveled to Nashua to test the mettle of the Lady Porcupines and came away with the knowledge that the Porkie's "Mettle" was too much for the Lady Mavs to handle. Not that the Lady Mavs played poorly. I thought they played very well, indeed. After all folks, the second game didn't end until the score of 30 to 28 was achieved, favoring Nashua unfortunately for the Hinsdale/Saco/Whitewater fans. Casity Boucher earned my star of the match honors because of her...
The Scotties' 2015 woes were compounded by Big Timber in Lewistown on Sept. 18. The team made pointed offensive adjustments in preparation for what head coach Greg Liebelt had called a "winnable game" the Monday following last weekend's 40-0 defeat at Baker. "If we're going to get things going," he said, "this is when it's going to happen." The pointed ultimatum - the importance of which Liebelt stoked in his players' hearts through a week of gritty practice - must have flickered and died...
GHS runners weren't the only ones who won big at Sidney Invitational. The Glasgow Middle School cross country team, both boys and girls, also took first place. While the seventh-and-eighth grade boys have dominated the competition this season so far, Sidney was the first win for the girls--no small feat for a team of only five. From left to right are Lexie Walton, Bailee Baxter with victory hands, Tyisha Bilger, Hannah Toavs, and Naomi Siverly....
Winning comes more easily some days than others, as the Scottie volleyball team found out last weekend. In game one against Glendive on Sept. 10, the team came out on fire and, with the backing of a raucous student section led by the GHS cheerleaders, cruised to a 25-13 win. Serving was tough, offense was varied, and good defense created even more momentum. In games two through four the Scotties flattened out and passing became an issue, which spiraled into a lack of offense which Glendive...
PATRICK BURR THE COURIER Walker Allen, Ellis McKean, and Merlin McKean glided to top-ten finishes, all of the Scotties' top five males finished in the varsity race's top twelve, and Glasgow stormed by 14 teams to claim first prize in Sept. 12's Malta Invitational. The squad's closest competitor, Havre, finished with 81 points - more than double Glasgow's 39. "It went how we wanted it to go," said Merlin McKean. Allen's time of 17:35 gave him second place. The older McKean, Ellis, followed him...
Glasgow drove the three-plus hours to Baker with an air of progress and possibility at its back. Last weekend's late loss to Glendive dropped the team's record to 0-2, but the performance and the scoreline represented a marked improvement from the opening defeat versus Colstrip, and served only to steel Scottie spirits. The chip in the young squad's shoulder, though, apparently needed further carving. Much to the Glasgow boys' calamity, the maroon-clad unit awaiting their arrival from the North...
Seems to me the rules were very simple. Each team gets 15 plays on offense and 15 plays on defense against each of their opponents throughout the day. They play from about the 30 yard line to the goal posts. That way two games can be played at the same time, one on each end of the field. The 7th graders played on the south field and the eighth on the north. Cordell Younkin is the only 8th grader from Hinsdale playing in Scottie Red, while there are six 7th graders from Hinsdale: Loden Idler, Wesley Leatherberry, Sam Malmend, Jeremy Longtree, Je...
The bone-chilling wind may have forced the Scottie faithful into thick sweatshirts and under heavy blankets earlier in the season than they'd anticipated but on the turf itself, their red and white-clad warriors' hearts burned fiery-hot, an intensity they maintained for the entirety of Friday night's 20-15 loss versus the Dawson County Red Devils. The visitors counted a collection of giants among their ranks - 6'8", 240 lb senior lineman Jarod Asche and 6'7", 195 lb senior WR/DB Bret Vester, to...
Every Opening Day brings a new generation of eager hunters to the field. Whether you are a new apprentice hunter or a young veteran, we want to showcase your hard work in the Courier. Submit your hunting photo along with a short story to [email protected] by noon on Mondays, and we'll try to get it into the sports pages. Don't forget to include your name, age, and the when/where/how of your trip....
The newly-established North Country Lady Mavericks traveled to Poplar Sept. 3 to test their mettle against the Lady Indians. It was an exciting match but the end result wasn't what us NC'ers wanted to see. Although the girls played very well they came out on the short end but made the Lady Indians work for their 3-2 victory. Poplar had three players who could serve bullets that didn't clear the net by much more than a couple feet and that, coupled by a low ceiling and ventilation ducts were the...
The Nashua Lady Porcupines broke the will of successive opponents on Sept. 4 and 5, drubbing both the Harlem Wildcats and the Lustre Lady Lions, 3-0. Thursday night versus the visiting Wildcats was hardly a contest. The Porcupines owned the court, leaping high to convert spikes and blocks, sliding to save points with valiant digs. Harlem cowered, paled, and fell in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17. On Friday, Lustre tiptoed into the Nashua gymnasium and met the same steamroller. Faith Keys...
The four-plus hour drive back to Glasgow from the Billings Invitational is, for all intents and purposes, a straight shot North; painting a uniform positive or negative tinge on the Scotties' results in the race, in comparison, is a sheer impossibility replete with ess-curves, backroads, and dead-ends. The varsity boys' squad finished 13th out of the 20 teams with enough runners for an official score, while the girls' top unit slipped into 15th out of 15 in its meet. Despite the two teams'...
Saturday night's season-opening tilt between Glasgow and their Class B rivals, the Colstrip Colts, awoke a youthful Scotties squad to the rigors of varsity competition; the visitors squelched their opponents' will over forty-eight suffocating minutes in a 40-13 drubbing. Granted, the victim put up a fight - the Scotties scored the game's first touchdown, and stymied the Colts' early advances with aplomb - but their predatorial foes' larger size and superior strength eventually seized the day. Un...
In a nutshell, the GHS volleyball team had a fantastic tournament over in Choteau this past weekend. This tournament is a great opener because each team is guaranteed 12 matches in two days, often against highly competitive western teams who are perennial state favorites. Outsized by far, the Scotties showed no fear and no sign of being the underdog. It was a total team effort - what the front row couldn't stop was dug up by the back row. Savvy setting and clever shot selection also helped seal...
Both the boys' and girls' cross country squads braved the smoky atmosphere Friday afternoon at the Glendive Invitational en route to respective second and fourth-place finishes. The girls, having graduated three leading runners from the 2014 team and missing four seniors due to MHSA practice regulations, nevertheless placed four runners in their meet's top 20. Faith Sallee (23:53, 14th) was the first Scottie to cross the finish line; on her heels was Alex Simensen (15th), who missed breaking...
The weekend fun and furry race consisted of two events -- a 5k and a one-mile sprint. Top finishers: 5k Joe Tucker Chase McAllister Jackie Miers 1 Mile Jackson Bishop Gage Anderson Tristen Powell A combined 44 participants entered the two races. The race raised $847 for the Northeast Montana Pet Rescue....
