Although fighting a bout with what she thought was stomach flu, North Country Mavericks sophomore Jada Sudbrack had a stellar game which started off with her hitting two KWAs, a normal point and a BWA in the first minute and a half of play. Chalk up two more victories for the Scottie volleyball team. After facing conference foes Poplar and Malta last week. Those matches concluded the first round of conference play and the Scotties are currently on top of the 2-B District. All teams play each other one more time before the District tournament but seeding in that tournament is important so each match is important. The new North Country Lady Mavericks traveled to Nashua to test the mettle of the Lady Porcupines and came away with the knowledge that the Porkie's "Mettle" was too much for the Lady Mavs to handle. Not that the Lady Mavs played poorly. I thought they played very well, indeed. The Scotties' 2015 woes were compounded by Big Timber in Lewistown on Sept. 18. Winning comes more easily some days than others, as the Scottie volleyball team found out last weekend. Seems to me the rules were very simple. Each team gets 15 plays on offense and 15 plays on defense against each of their opponents throughout the day. They play from about the 30 yard line to the goal posts. That way two games can be played at the same time, one on each end of the field. The Nashua Lady Porcupines broke the will of successive opponents on Sept. 4 and 5, drubbing both the Harlem Wildcats and the Lustre Lady Lions, 3-0. In a nutshell, the GHS volleyball team had a fantastic tournament over in Choteau this past weekend. This tournament is a great opener because each team is guaranteed 12 matches in two days, often against highly competitive western teams who are perennial state favorites. Montana's Fish & Wildlife Commission approved a new rule this week that clears the way for the state's "apprentice hunter" law to take effect. The law, enacted earlier this year by the state Legislature, allows youth 10-17 years of age to obtain a certification to purchase some Montana hunting licenses before completing a hunter education course.
