As Maverick head coach Barry Malone told me at the tournament after the first game against Tri-Cities, "We made a lot of unforced errors, but all-in-all I thought we played pretty good for our first time on the court." I saw improvement in their serving over last year, especially Jada Sudbrack who has a cannon serve that has a tendency to drop to the floor just after crossing the net. Coach Malone started his four returning starters from last year, Sudbrack, Mickayla Johnson, Kayleigh Cummings... Full story
Finding strength from within is how Amanda Wolff gets through life. As a runner, she knows that it is her choice how long she runs as well as how hard she works out. She also knows that she is in control of her destiny. Growing up in northeastern Montana, Wolff didn't have the easiest childhood. She came from a broken home. She lived with her mom until the fifth grade when she moved 50 miles away to be raised by her dad. By her sophomore year, she had moved out and was living with Steve and... Full story

A total of 165 people took to the streets Aug. 20 to support Veterans and get pelted with bright colored chalk. While the majority of event go-ers wore white T-shirts, some came in flamboyant bright costumes. This event contains a genuine levity that can be hard to describe with just words. So, I aimed to do it justice with my camera. As I looked for opportune spots for photography, I talked to the paint tossers. It became pretty evident early on that they clearly had the best job out of anyone... Full story

Zadick, a 2008 Olympian and 2009 U.S. National Champion, did the majority of instruction on the afternoon of the camp's...
From one corner of the state to the another, the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder traveled nearly 500 miles to Hamilton for the state swim meet July 30 and 31. When they left the Bitterroot, they had a state championship trophy, two state champion relays, two individual state champions, and a whole lot of proud supporters. "Every swimmer showed up with something to prove after divisionals, making it an exciting state meet," said head coach Nicole Arnold. "Nearly all swimmers received their best times... Full story

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team finished their eighth weekend of competition July 23 and 24 in Malta, where the divisional swim meet was held. With 370 swimmers from ten veteran teams, the competition was tough. Swimmers must place in the top 12 of their events just to qualify for state competition. That's not an easy task, and not all swimmers make it past divisionals. The Thunder was represented by just more than half of their rostered team, with 32 swimmers competing at the two-day meet. Of tho...
It was a tough "building" year for the 2016 Reds', and their season came to a disappointing end at the district tournament in Billings after just two games. The first game for the Reds was held Thursday afternoon, July 21, with Glasgow facing the Sidney Patriots on the diamond. Sidney claimed the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs on a two-run error. The Patriots never let go of the lead and dominated the entire contest offensively with seven batters combining for 18 hits, 17 RBIs, and...
Bringing their regular season to a close, the Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team competed at the Sidney Invitational July 16 and 17. The Thunder earned a respectable fourth place with a small number of swimmers participating. The Sidney Tiger Sharks, with their full roster, placed first with more than 1,200 points – three times more than Glasgow's 428.5 points. Damian Cable, an intermediate swimmer for the Thunder, had an impressive weekend. Cable placed in the top six of each of his events and cut more...
Glasgow hosted the 2016 Montana Cal Ripken 10U State Tournament July 13-17, with a total of eleven teams participating. Unfortunately, Glasgow's own all-stars' run came to an early end due to the weather. In what seems to be the norm lately, the tournament was at the mercy of Mother Nature. In an effort to get games going again, tournament volunteers came up with an unconventional way to dry up the field. They lit it on fire.... Full story
GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER After losing the opportunity to play some home games due to weather and poor field conditions, the Glasgow Reds traveled to Billings for their final regular season games on July 15, 16 and 17. The Reds first faced the Laurel Dodgers on Friday evening. Despite an outstanding offensive game by Bryce Legare, and six Dodger errors, the Reds fell to Laurel 6-15. All six runs for the Reds were credited to Legare after a single in the third inning and an always-impressive...
GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER Laurel 7, Glasgow 0 The Glasgow Reds faced the Laurel Dodgers in a double header at home July 2. The first game of the afternoon was a shutout for the Dodgers, who racked up several runs late in the game to finish with a score of 7-0. The Reds held Laurel's offense to just a few runs until the top of the seventh inning, when the Dodgers scored five runs. Bryce Legare was the losing pitcher for the Reds, tossing nearly 90 pitches in his seven innings on the mound....
The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder had a small group of swimmers representing the team in Glendive the weekend of July 9 and 10. Temperatures reached 93 degrees on Saturday, which always has the potential to sap energy from the competitors, as well as potentially causing heat stroke or dehydration. Additionally, a storm was predicted for the afternoon on Sunday, so meet organizers made some changes to the event schedule to prepare for possible delays or a meet cancellation. With just 18 swimmers making...
A popular Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) Region 6 program that allows children and their families to check out free fishing rods and tackle is in full swing again this year. Just in time for summer fishing, FWP staff is in the process of restocking the 46 different location sites across Montana's Hi-Line. The "Kids to Fish" program lets youngsters check out fishing rods and reels and basic tackle, such as hooks, bobbers, and sinkers. Typically, eight rods are at each location, and a...

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team welcomed 280 swimmers over the Fourth-of-July weekend for their annual invitational meet. Events started the morning of July 2 at 10 a.m. after Glasgow resident Hannah Mickelson sang the national anthem for the crowd. Most of the races held on the first day of a meet are preliminary, so it's not unusual to have several heats for a single event. With 11 teams competing, it made for a busy day, but with parents tackling their duties head on and Auzzy's Cook Shack...
The Glasgow Reds faced the Glendive Blue Devils in back-to-back double headers last week. For their first two games of the stretch, the Reds were in Glendive on June 28. The Blue Devils capitalized on their home-field advantage and defeated the Reds in both contests. Glasgow 3, Glendive 7 Kasey Seyfert pitched the entire first game for the Reds, but was unable to claim the win. Seyfert allowed seven runs, walked three, and struck out three. Glendive snagged an early lead with three runs in the...
The Glasgow Thunder nearly brought home some hardware from the Plentywood swim meet this past weekend, June 25 and 26, placing fourth overall behind the Scobey Stingrays, the hometown Plentywood Dolphins, and the roster-heavy Sidney Tiger Sharks. Once again, the weather was a major problem with several lightning delays bringing the meet to a halt on Saturday. A typical swim-meet day ends mid-afternoon, but on Saturday the event was still going strong into the evening and didn't conclude until...
GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER The Reds traveled to Dickinson, N.D. this past weekend for a four-day tournament, but were unable to pull out a single win.
