    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Apr 6, 2016

It was an unusual day for a track meet on Saturday. Unusual because the weather was perfect. There was no rain, snow, or wind. Okay, there was some wind, but it kept the bugs away. Glasgow hosted the first track meet of the year at Scottie field and it turned out to be quite a successful day for several athletes. In 26 events, Glasgow had 41 athletes/teams place in the top six. Former Glasgow Reds and current Dickinson State Blue Hawks Wacy Ortmann, Jonathan Koessl, and Jason Thibault have already had a very busy March with their team. From March 5 to March 18 the Blue Hawks had 16 games, all but 5 of them including an appearance from the Valley County trio. Ortmann, a Lustre-area native and former ranging outfielder and slugger for the Reds, is a rostered outfielder for the Blue Hawks, and also pinch runs/hits. • 2015-2016 Eastern C Girls Basketball All-State Selections

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Mar 23, 2016

'Tis quite an honor to be selected for the All-State Girls Class C Eastern Division Basketball Team. It's doubly sweet to have two girls from the same team chosen for this honor. Two of the North Country Lady Mavericks were chosen this season. It came as no surprise for Whitewater's Tatum Moore to be picked. She earned it with her smothering defense and her pin-point shooting. Her forte, at 5'6”, has been to challenge the “bigs” in the paint by driving to the hoop and shooting the lay-up with either hand. Moore is a senior and plans to play...

  • Highlanders Throw Their Weight Around at State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Mar 16, 2016

The Glasgow Wrestling Club took over half of their stacked roster to Great Falls this past weekend for the AAU State Wrestling Tournament. That translates into the fifth largest team at the event for the second year in a row. With 66 teams in attendance, it would seem quite a task for a class B team to make their mark. It would not be a problem for the Highlanders, however, as they placed ninth ... behind only seven class AA teams and Havre. Setting a new club record, 40 percent of the...

Glasgow 53, Rocky Boy 39 The...

Mayport 2, Glasgow 0 In their first game of the tournament, the U19 girls matched up against the Mayport Ice Dawgs. For the most part, it was an uneventful contest. Glasgow was unable to find the back of the net during the contest and Mayport scored their two goals in the third period. G...

  • ElCorDel's 9-Pin No-Tap Tourney

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Mar 9, 2016

The annual 9 Pin No-Tap Tournament at ElCorDel Lanes is one of the most anticipated bowling tournaments of the year and did not disappoint. Balls were rolling, pins were flying, drinks were flowing and laughter was pealing. Typically, the evening is a chance for bowlers from all leagues to get together for friendly competition. The structure of the tournament is changed from regular scoring so that a hit of 9 pins counts as a strike. It is not unusual to see a “300 game” or more. Names are drawn for teams of two, usually with one man and one...

  • Fourth Place Finish Ends Season for Lady Mavericks

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Mar 2, 2016

In their first game of the 2016 Girls Eastern C Divisional Tournament held in Wolf Point last Thursday, the North Country Lady Mavericks caused several of the Maverick faithful to need oxygen. This game was not for the timid or faint of heart. It was a battle royale from the opening bell to the closing wheezle as are all the games between these two powerhouse teams. MonDak has lost the last four meetings between them and Hinsdale, Saco/Whitewater or a combination thereof. Tonight was no...

  • Squirts Claim Championship with Heart

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 24, 2016

The most important game in a tournament weekend isn't always the championship game. Sometimes you have to slay the beast before you slay the dragon. After defeating each opponent in their first three games of the tournament, the Glasgow Ice Dawg Squirts fought the beast – otherwise known as the Missoula Bruins – and won. They moved on to play the Havre Ice Hawks for the title on Sunday afternoon, and snagged the well-deserved victory. They had some other business to take care of first, and tak...

  • Here We Are Again: The 2016 Divisional Basketball Tournament

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Feb 24, 2016

Since 2007 at least one of the three towns that now make up the North Country Mavericks have sent one or more teams to state tournaments either in football (with Glasgow or Malta), volleyball, basketball or track. 2016 has creepily creeped up on us and here we are again looking at maybe another trip to the big dance. The Lady Mavericks of Saco/Hinsdale/Whitewater, a newly founded triad, just won the 3C girls basketball district tourney, as well as the 3C conference championship sporting a...

  • Lady Scotties Place 2nd in Districts

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 24, 2016

It was the Lady Scotties' first showing in a district championship game since 2012. Of course, they were matched up against the undefeated Malta M-Ettes. Although anything can happen during tournaments, the Scotties were unable to upset their rival, closing out the tournament with a 47-29 loss. The greatest parts of the game for the Lady Scotties were the first three points, and the last three points of the contest, with a whole lot of good stuff in-between. To start off the game, Glasgow claimed the lead with a two-point shot from Abbi...
