    Janet Bailey, Courier Correspondent|Jun 29, 2016

The Opheim Rodeo was held June 26, following a parade down Main Street. The event started with a presentation of flags by Tanner Solberg and Russell Solberg on horseback. After the playing of Johnny Cash's "Ragged Old Flag", Cowboy Hall-of-Famer Miles "Bud" Geer was driven into the arena in a pickup. This years rodeo was dedicated to Geer, rodeo stock producer and cowboy. Howie Solberg read about some of Bud's life: He was born September 18, 1921 in New London, Minn. Bud's father moved the...

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 22, 2016

The Courier's very own baseball team (okay, we share them with Albertsons) defeated Glasgow Distributors (GD) Monday night to become the Cal Ripken Majors city champs. GD made their way to the championship game the hard way, fighting their way through the loser's bracket and forcing a second game against Albertsons/Courier (A/C). A/C had been undefeated in the tournament until Sunday afternoon, when GD handed them their first loss. With Rance Rhoads pitching for A/C and Kiegan Ingram on the...

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed at their third swim meet of the season June 18 and 19 in Chinook, and placed seventh overall. This past weekend's meet was the first meet held in Chinook since the loss of swimmer Jesse Dannels, who died in a motor vehicle accident earlier this year. Dannels mother, Ruth, was the announcer for the weekend. On Saturday morning, swimmers from each team assembled at the edge of the pool and joined hands while memories were shared. Following a prayer, in a...

The Glasgow Reds traveled to Lewistown for a four-day tournament June 16-19. The young team was unable to snag a win until their final game of the tournament against Dickinson. The boys faced the Tri-County Cardinals for their first game Thursday morning. The Cardinals scored their one and only run in the bottom of the first inning, but it was the run that would win them the game. Kasey Seyfert pitched a full six innings, faced 24 batters, and struck out 4. Despite their six hits in the game, two of which were from Korbin Cole, the Reds were un...

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 15, 2016

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder swim team competed in their second meet of the season June 10 and 11, traveling to Scobey for two days of racing. The team was represented by considerably more swimmers than at the previous meet held in Harlem, and the Thunder earned fourth place overall. Last summer, Scobey hosted their first meet since building their new pool, and a new pool record was set for each event. This weekend, many of those records were broken, but a few still stand and wait to be...

  • Foundation "ParTEE" Golf Tournament

Mary Kate Tihista, For The Courier|Jun 15, 2016

The rain stopped just in time for the 18th Annual Open Golf Tournament on June 12. The teams came out to support a great cause and great community, even with 1.5 inches of rain on the course. Each of the 18 teams registered, had breakfast and were all ready to tee off by 9 a.m. Every hole featured a different game for everyone, with the winner taking home wonderful prizes donated by local businesses. The games were designed so that both experienced and inexperienced golfers had chances to win. The marshmallow game, sponsored by the Foundation,...

In addition to local drivers, some of the 20 entrants came from Billings, Plentywood, Raymond, Crane, Great Falls, and as far as Conrad to compete in the races. • George Bros. Go Back-to-Back

    Parker Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 8, 2016

If "Northeast Montana loves fishing" isn't one of the truest statements ever made, I don't know what is. The 17th Annual Catfish Classic hosted 80 teams of two for this year's tournament. Most of the teams consisted of area and Montana residents, with some coming to fish from as far away as Indiana. The teams converged on the Milk River for some fishin' in the dark on Saturday, June 5. After the midnight weigh-ins were all said and done, Glasgow natives Tyler and Ryan George claimed...

  • Thunder Competes in Harlem, Earns Fifth

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 8, 2016

With zero pool practice time and few competitors for the weekend, the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder Swim Team still managed a solid performance at the Harlem Invitational swim meet this past weekend, placing fifth overall out of 15 teams. Harlem's two-day meet is typically low-key and is a good way to start the season, allowing new swimmers to experience a meet without an overwhelming number of competitors or commotion. Because they did not have a meet in their federation, a number of teams from the...

  • Scottie Softball Fourth in the State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 1, 2016

Despite their best efforts, the Scottie softball team was unable to bring home hardware from the state tournament in Kalispell. Bracketing, contentious calls, and foul weather may have been contributing factors in the disappointing results. Glasgow faced Florence in their first game on Thursday. During warm-ups just prior to the game, a lightning strike initiated a mandatory waiting period before play could begin. Then, following the first few innings, the sky opened up with a heavy spring...

  • Track Season Comes to an End for Scotties

    Georgie Kulczyk, For The Courier|Jun 1, 2016

GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER The atmosphere at the State B Track and Field Meet was remarkable. There were all the usual distractions and performances, but they were more pronounced. The starter's gun seemed to crack a little louder - even more so when it popped off twice, signaling a false start. The aroma of menthol was prevalent and athletic tape was in abundance. Tears flowed more freely and celebrations were less inhibited. The state meet also had more defined rules that were strictly...

  • Scotties Give Divisional Meet the Old One-Two

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 25, 2016

The show must go on. Despite a day-long rain and an hour-and-a-half weather intermission, the Northern B Divisional Track Meet slowly, but surely, moved forward and the participants forged ahead. Early Saturday afternoon, everything came to a screeching halt with a flash of lightning, a crack of thunder and a torrent of rain. Spectators and competitors quickly made their way to safety indoors or took refuge in nearby school cruisers. Facing at least a 30-minute wait before the meet could...

  • Scottie Softball On To State with Second-Place Finish at Divisionals

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 25, 2016

Another spring sport fell victim to the weather when the Eastern B/C softball tournament was cut short on Saturday. The Scottie girls were playing their fifth game of the tournament against Columbus when a spring storm hit with wind, rain and hail. The game was called in the fourth inning, and the tournament was cancelled. The Scotties faced Colstrip in their first game of the weekend and came away with the win after Tiana Johnson hit an RBI double in the eighth inning. Glasgow gained an early lead with seven runs in the first two innings, but...

Glasgow's lady golfers were in Shepherd to compete in the State B golf meet on May 17 and 18. With 33 schools competing, the Scotties had some work to do. Her final score after two days was 202. Heidi Moon also shot a personal best on the first day of the tournament with a score of 120, and she beat that the...

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 18, 2016

The Nashua lady tracksters earned an impressive second-place trophy for their efforts at the District 3-C Track Meet held May 14. Impressive because they only had six girls competing for points. Leading the way for the Porcupines was Taylor Laumeyer with two first-place and one second-place throws, a third-place finish in the 400m run (PR), and a fourth-place long jump finish. Laumeyer also achieved a PR in both the discus and the javelin. Senior Faith Keys placed second in the discus, third in...

  • Scottie Golfers Fight Wind, Rain, Snow

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 11, 2016

Perseverance paid off for the Glasgow golfers at their divisional meet in Shelby. With likely the worst weather possible descending on them, the girls earned their third-place trophy and punched their ticket to the state meet next week. Assistant coach Betty Truscott said the weather was "horrid," and the meet was called after just nine holes. Truscott explained that it was 34 degrees with snow and rain, with 22 mph winds. "It's very tough to play in that weather," she said. Despite the adverse...

That would be the only run for the Wolves as Glasgow's defense shut them down for the remaining four innings. Khloe Krumwiede, Abbi Kolstad, Lexi Nixdorf and Ashtyn Myrick all went 2-3 in the game. Kolstad hit two homers, with Krumwiede and...

  • Top Ten Highlights Select Athletes

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 11, 2016

Top Ten The Top Ten track meet was held in Glasgow May 3. Meant to highlight the top ten athletes in each event, the meet produced some inspiring performances. Although the athletes participating were serious about the competition, the evening was fairly relaxed, the competition was friendly, and sportsmanship was prevalent. The Scotties were well represented and finished strong. Both Leinie Hughes and Luke Breigenzer qualified for the state meet. With her qualifying throw of 34-08.50 in the...
