The Valley Event Center has another championship banner to hang in the rafters. The 2017 MAHA State Bantam Tournament was held in Glasgow March 10-12, and the Ice Dawgs captured the first ever Bantam championship for Hi-Line Youth Hockey. Bringing their basketball season to an end, the Glasgow Scotties fell to the Malta Mustangs in their third game of the Northern B Divisional basketball tournament, which was held in Cut Bank Mar. 2-4. The annual Hi-Line Skating Showcase was held March 4 at the Valley Event Center. This year's theme was "Holidays on Ice" and featured a mixture of solo skates, duets, and group performances. Beginning and ending with group presentations, the afternoon was a recital of skills learned by the program's students. The Frazer Bearcubs were underestimated by many during the 2016-2017 basketball season. Judging by the sea of columbia blue present at their games, there were also many that knew how special they were. Of the eight teams competing in the Northern B Divisional Girls Basketball Tournament, the Lady Scotties had as much of a chance as any to advance to the state tournament in Billings. This year, three teams from the division had the opportunity to punch their ticket to the big show scheduled for March 9-11. The Glasgow 19U Ice Dawgs captured third place at the Montana Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) State Tournament held in Butte Feb. 24-26. The girls advanced to the consolation game on Sunday of the tournament and brought home third-place with an 8-4 win over the Flathead Lady Fusion. The 11th annual Hi-Line Skating Showcase will be held at the Valley Event Center this Saturday, Mar. 4. The event will begin at 2 p.m., and is free of charge. Each year, student skaters show off their skills and perform for the community in the event. This year, 33 skaters, ages 3-16, will perform in the "Holidays on Ice" showcase. The High School Ice Dawgs traveled to Havre for two games on Feb. 25. The Ice Dawgs claimed a 2-1 win against the Ice Hawks in the first game with bookend goals in the first and second periods. Just two minutes into the game, Casey Mattfeldt was sent to the penalty box for tripping. No harm, no foul, however, as Havre was unable to take advantage of the power play. With a spot at divisionals already secured, the Scottie boys set their sights on making it to the championship game during the district tournament held in Malta Feb. 16-18. The 14U Ice Dawgs hosted two home games at the Valley Event Center Feb. 18 and 19. The girls snatched an exciting win on Saturday in an overtime thriller against the Dickinson Lady Outlaws. Both teams waited until the final period of the game to do anything offensively. The 19U Lady Ice Dawgs played one home game this past weekend when they faced off against the Watford City Oilers Feb. 19. The girls were out-shot by Watford City 38-17. In the net, Kassie Moore was able to stop 30 of the shots on goal for the Ice Dawgs. The Lady Scotties competed at the District 2B Basketball Tournament in Malta Feb. 16-18, playing three games in three days, and punched their ticket to the Northern 2B Divisional Tournament. Their first task of the tournament was to defeat the Harlem Lady Cats in a play-in game on Thursday night. The Highlanders competed across the state this past weekend, crowning 19 champions in total. 50-plus wrestlers headed to Poplar, Choteau and Butte Feb. 18 and 19 for their annual invitational tournaments. With State AAU only a few short weeks away, the Highlanders are showing vast improvement and dedication. The Scotties placed three grapplers on the podium at the All-Class State Wrestling Tournament held in Billings Feb. 10 and 11. In addition to Matt Reyling clinching his second consecutive state title, seniors Tony Kaiser and Gabe Hallock earned hardware for their second-and third-place finishes, respectively. The Montana Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) 14-and-Under Girls State Tournament started Feb. 10 at the Havre Ice Dome. The first-seeded Glasgow Ice Dawgs faced the seventh-seeded Havre Ice Hawks to open the tournament Friday evening, and the Ice Hawks fired off the first goal of the tournament. With a loss against the Malta Mustangs and a win over the Wolf Point Wolves, the Scottie boys enter the District 2B tournament as the number two seed. Glasgow was host to the Eastern B/C Divisional wrestling tournament Feb. 5, and with 11 placers and two divisional championships, the Scotties were rewarded for a season of hard work. The Lady Scotties earned two consecutive wins over Harlem and Scobey last week. On Feb. 2, Glasgow prevailed over the Lady Wild Cats 60-43. The Lady Scotties split two games last week, with an overtime win against the class A Dawson County Red Devils Jan. 26, and a conference loss to the Poplar Lady Indians on Jan. 28. The Glasgow Speech and Drama team traveled to Havre Jan. 27 and 28 for the state meet, which was hosted by Chinook.
