The Scotties prevailed over the Poplar Indians in another lopsided victory on Oct. 14. Following senior night festivities with recognition of 25 football, cheer and cross country seniors, the Scotties hit the field and scored a long series of touchdowns. Dawson County High School senior Breilyn Riggin came back from a one-stroke deficit after day one of the State Class A Golf Tournament to finish as the top lady golfer in Hamilton. Riggin (163) was three shots better on Saturday than her 83 on Friday to beat Lewistown’s Kinsey Irvin (166) and last year’s runner-up, Butte Central’s Tricia Joyce (168). The Glasgow cross country team was in Plentywood Oct. 15 for the last regular season meet of 2016. The Scotties swept the meet with both the boys and girls taking the number one spot. For the boys, Glasgow had six runners place in the top ten, with Ellis McKean, Merlin McKean and Wilson Overby sweeping the top three spots. Only the die-hard parents and fans were seated in the bleachers for the Scotties' Oct. 7 game against the Harlem Wildcats. With the temperature dropping below 40 degrees, it was a cold, windy night to watch football. For those that braved the weather, the boys put on a good show. The Scottie volleyball team's trip to Scobey Oct. 4 was uneventful, as far as bus rides go. The volleyball match itself was a different matter entirely, as the Spartans and the Scotties faced off in a fierce battle of exciting offensive and defensive plays that brought the crowd to their feet. North Country vs. Poplar The North Country Lady Mavericks were undoubtedly worn out before this past weekend came to an end. The co-op squad from Hinsdale, Saco and Whitewater faced three opponents in as many days. The first of three opponents was the scrappy Lady Indians of Poplar, who had the home court advantage. The Wolf Point Wolves hosted the Glasgow Scotties on the gridiron Sept. 30, and they were determined to prevail over the Scotties. Unfortunately, the most newsworthy notes of the evening for the home team were their senior recognition and homecoming festivities. All this talk about the importance of passing, volleyball's first and most critical contact, proved its case as the Scotties fought for a victory over the Wolf Point Wolves Sept. 29. The crowd was raucous, packed with students who never stopped cheering, students who have endlessly and enthusiastically supported us every game - what a great environment to play in. North Country vs. Glasgow JV The North Country Lady Mavericks defeated Glasgow's JV squad in three games, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21, held in Hinsdale Sept. 27. Jada Sudbrack led her team in kills with eight, followed by Mickayla Johnson with seven. Johnson also finished the game with a team high of two blocks. After winning in her age group in the local Punt, Pass, Kick competion, Glasgow's Davyn Myrick advanced to the sectional competition held in Miles City Oct. 2. Competing against athletes from Southern and Eastern Mont., as well as Northern Wyo., Myrick took the top spot in her age group with a distance of 214'5". Several teams braved less than ideal conditions to compete at the GHS cross country invitational held in Fort Peck Sept. 24. The Scottie boys and girls swept the meet, with Emily Kolstad leading the way for the girls and Ellis McKean for the boys. The past week was busy for the GHS volleyball team as they traveled to Sidney Sept. 20 to take on the class A Eagles. In a very competitive four-set match, Glasgow came out on fire, stunning the Eagles with aggressive serving and a wicked-fast offense that kept their block from forming a wall strong enough to stop the Scotties. The North Country Lady Mavericks were defeated by the Scobey Lady Spartans (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) in three home games held Sept. 24. Statistically, the teams were comparable for the evening, except in digs. The Lady Spartans recorded 34 compared to the Ladys Mavericks' 14. The Scotties suited up for their 2016 homecoming game vs. the Big Timber Sheepherders on Sept. 16. Before the evening was over, the cheerleaders were worn out from doing jumping jacks, and the cannon had nearly depleted the supply of gun powder in Valley County. Early in the first quarter, starting quarterback Darrin Wersal got the ball to Luke Breigenzer who ran it in for a 23-yard touchdown. Two big wins this past homecoming weekend catapulted the Scottie volleyball team into a solid 4-0 first-place standing at the conclusion of the first round of their conference season. The Scotties faced the Baker Spartans in a hard-hitting game of football Sept. 9, giving the second ranked team a run for their money. The Scotties struggled to find their footing in the first quarter of the game. Defensively, they failed to deny the Spartans, who scored two touchdowns and had one successful two-point conversion. The Scottie cross country team successfully swept the Malta Invitational meet held Sept. 10. Leading the way for the varsity girls was Morgan Guttenberg, who placed sixth with a time of 23:11. Two 2B matches kept the Scottie volleyball team very busy last week. On Sept. 8, they hosted rival Wolf Point in a four set match. They eventually won 26-24, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, but it was a battle all night. Wolf Point came armed with size, strength and will-power that tested the Scotties on every play. The North Country Lady Mavericks faced the Brockton Lady Warriors Sept. 10, and defeated their opponents in three swift games – 25-9, 25-10, 25-9. Junior Mickayla Johnson led the team in kills with nine of the team's 17 total. Bailey Funk, also a junior, earned the one dig of the game for the Lady Mavs, and sophomore Mia Rimoldi finished the game with 12 of North Country's 20 assists. The Scottie runners competed at the Billings Invitational held Sept. 2. With nearly 30 teams in attendance and hundreds of runners, the Scotties represented well. The varsity boys team had a strong showing, placing in the upper third of the teams overall with a total score of 297, while the girls placed better than just about half of the teams that came to compete with a total score of 352.
