  • Lady Scotties Earn Consolation in Dickinson

    Lori Dailey, For the Courier|Sep 28, 2016

The past week was busy for the GHS volleyball team as they traveled to Sidney Sept. 20 to take on the class A Eagles. In a very competitive four-set match, Glasgow came out on fire, stunning the Eagles with aggressive serving and a wicked-fast offense that kept their block from forming a wall strong enough to stop the Scotties. In quick fashion, Glasgow came out on top 25-14. Game two was much closer as the Eagles found their stride and pushed back, costing Glasgow the set 25-22. The Lady... Full story

  • Big Red Blanks Big Timber

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 21, 2016

The Scotties suited up for their 2016 homecoming game vs. the Big Timber Sheepherders on Sept. 16. Before the evening was over, the cheerleaders were worn out from doing jumping jacks, and the cannon had nearly depleted the supply of gun powder in Valley County. Early in the first quarter, starting quarterback Darrin Wersal got the ball to Luke Breigenzer who ran it in for a 23-yard touchdown. Benji Phillips followed the TD with a successful two-point conversion run. Score: 8-0. The score... Full story

  • Scotties Serve Up Two Shut-Outs

    Lori Dailey, For the Courier|Sep 21, 2016

Two big wins this past homecoming weekend catapulted the Scottie volleyball team into a solid 4-0 first-place standing at the conclusion of the first round of their conference season. On Sept. 8, a three-set victory over a determined M-ette team showcased a lot of poise on the GHS side of the net. Even in the face of adversity, the Scotties maintained emotional control, a positive aspect the team has been actively striving for all season, and were able to complete the task of pushing through to... Full story

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 14, 2016

The Scotties faced the Baker Spartans in a hard-hitting game of football Sept. 9, giving the second ranked team a run for their money. The Scotties struggled to find their footing in the first quarter of the game. Defensively, they failed to deny the Spartans, who scored two touchdowns and had one successful two-point conversion. Offensively, they were unable to make it to the end zone themselves, and the quarter ended with Baker on top 14-0. The Scotties found some momentum in the second... Full story

  • Lady Scotties Top Wolf Point and Harlem

    Lori Dailey, For the Courier|Sep 14, 2016

Two 2B matches kept the Scottie volleyball team very busy last week. On Sept. 8, they hosted rival Wolf Point in a four set match. They eventually won 26-24, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, but it was a battle all night. Wolf Point came armed with size, strength and will-power that tested the Scotties on every play. GHS succeeded in outscoring them, but as the numbers indicate, this was no easy feat. Injury forced GHS to move their lineup around and shake things up a bit, but down the road this will serve... Full story

  • Scotties Fall to Glendive

    Lori Dailey, For The Courier|Sep 7, 2016

It was a busy weekend for GHS volleyball and many noisy fans came out to celebrate the occasion. The Sept. 1 home opener against Class A Glendive showcased a lot of good competition, but in the end the Red Devils proved to be too much for the Scotties, taking the match 17-25, 20-25, 25-20, 23-25. As is common early in the season, the Scotties were plagued by unforced errors, due to jitters more than anything. The Scotties dug the relentless attack of Glendive but struggled to kill for points. Serving errors were more prevalent than usual and... Full story

  • Despite Hustle, Lady Mavs Lose to Harlem

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Sep 7, 2016

VIRGIL VAUPEL COURIER CORRESPONDENT I was late getting to Saco for the volleyball match Sept. 1 so when I finally got there the games had begun. Here's what I saw: There were six young ladies on the Maverick side of the net and they were obviously well coached because almost every time their opponent served the ball the Lady Mavs would return it with a beautiful display of the ol' "Bump, Set and Spike" trick. They were really good at digging the ball up and passing to a teammate, they hit some... Full story

In a battle of two-point conversions, safeties, fumbles and penalties, the Scotties prevailed. The Red Devils dominated the first quarter of the game, scoring a touchdown and preventing the Scotties from gaining ground most of the time. The first quarter ended with a score of 6-0 in favor of the Red Devils. Heading into the second quarter, Glasgow was looking to make... Full story

  • Scotties Face Tough Teams in Choteau

    Lori Dailey, For The Courier|Aug 31, 2016

Each year Choteau promises a dazzling display of high-class volleyball, and this year was no exception. Despite being a pre-season tournament, all 15 teams assembled in the gym were finely tuned and raring to go. As is customary, the Scotties were grouped in with some of the toughest teams in attendance. First-round pool play pitted GHS against such extremely competitive teams as Choteau, 2015 state champions Red Lodge, Three Forks and Conrad. The girls fought tooth and nail, winning some... Full story

The Scotties won with 45 team points, out-distancing Plentywood, Poplar, Culbertson and a number of other teams that didn't field complete rosters. • Fort Peck Triathlon a Success

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Aug 31, 2016

GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER Despite some of the competitors experiencing some apparent pre-race jitters, a fun time was had by all at the Fort Peck Triathlon, and the weather was perfect. The event was held at Flat Lake Aug. 27 and drew participants from as far as Scobey. The adult portion of the event began with an 800-meter open water swim, and seemed to cause trepidation in multiple participants. All competitors finished the leg, however, with Krista Scott exiting the water with a... Full story

  • North Country Lady Mavericks Compete in Malta Invitational Opener

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Aug 31, 2016

As Maverick head coach Barry Malone told me at the tournament after the first game against Tri-Cities, "We made a lot of unforced errors, but all-in-all I thought we played pretty good for our first time on the court." I saw improvement in their serving over last year, especially Jada Sudbrack who has a cannon serve that has a tendency to drop to the floor just after crossing the net. Coach Malone started his four returning starters from last year, Sudbrack, Mickayla Johnson, Kayleigh Cummings... Full story

  • Running the Distance

    Alicia Erickson, For The Courier|Aug 24, 2016

Finding strength from within is how Amanda Wolff gets through life. As a runner, she knows that it is her choice how long she runs as well as how hard she works out. She also knows that she is in control of her destiny. Growing up in northeastern Montana, Wolff didn't have the easiest childhood. She came from a broken home. She lived with her mom until the fifth grade when she moved 50 miles away to be raised by her dad. By her sophomore year, she had moved out and was living with Steve and... Full story

The new location for the event will be at the Flat Lake boat ramp, and the running portion will take participants over the Fort Peck Dam and the Spillway. With the new route, organizers anticipate that participants will be able to enjoy great scenery changes during the race. Registration is open to individuals or three-person teams and begins at 7:30 a.m. You can register... Full story

  • Color Run Supports Veterans

    Dane Osen, The Courier|Aug 24, 2016

A total of 165 people took to the streets Aug. 20 to support Veterans and get pelted with bright colored chalk. While the majority of event go-ers wore white T-shirts, some came in flamboyant bright costumes. This event contains a genuine levity that can be hard to describe with just words. So, I aimed to do it justice with my camera. As I looked for opportune spots for photography, I talked to the paint tossers. It became pretty evident early on that they clearly had the best job out of anyone... Full story
