The softball team opened with a 6-4 win Tuesday over Havre in a game added to take place before the regularly scheduled opener at 3:30 p.m. this Thursday against visiting Glendive. Now it's official. The 2014-15 Scottie boys basketball and wrestling teams played with smarts. Each received the MHSA/Army National Guard Academic All Team Award as the top academic team in its sport in Montana Class B during the winter season. The wrestlers led the state with a 3.370 grade point average during a season in which the team sent six members to State and placed highly or won a number of invitationals. The Glasgow Wrestling Club Highlanders, about 60 kids strong, are picking up matches and pins wherever they can find them. Team members hit the mats at the Montana Open in Billings this weekend after making some noise last week at the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Denver, the Wolf Point Invitational and the Malta Mixer. Montana's spring male turkey hunting season begins April 11 this year. Turkey hunters can purchase a turkey license in a general area at FWP offices, license providers or online. The application deadline for western Montana's spring gobbler season permits has passed. Some of the young blood over at the Valley Event Center rink has been going prime time lately. The Glasgow Ice Dawg Bantams took their turn at the Montana Amateur Hockey Association Bantam B State Tournament in Havre last weekend, going 2-1-1 to place second after coming in with a 4-11-1 record. Year 17 is shaping up like a real diaper dandy for hundreds of young players at this weekend's Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament. The 84 teams, including nine from Regina, Sask., exceed last year's total of about 80 and will compete at five Glasgow venues. The 2015 Class C Girls State Basketball Tournament is in the books. Eight teams from the four corners of this very large state converged at the Adams Center, Dahlberg Arena on the campus of the University of Montana under the 'M' for a thre- day tournament to see who would take home the heavy hardware. The golfers teed off at 3:45 p.m. at El Cor Del Lanes. Softball players reported at 6 at GHS. The 19U Lady Ice Dawgs traveled to Bismarck, N.D., this past weekend to compete in the North Dakota Amateur Hockey Association State Tournament. The Lady Ice Dawgs were going into the tournament ranked seventh after the regular season standings. On Friday night the Lady Ice Dawgs faced the No. 2 ranked Bismarck Capitals on their home ice. Basketball season isn't over quite yet. The signup deadline is this Friday, March 13, for the 17th annual Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament at venues across Glasgow. Tourney time is March 20-22. The tournament, a fixture on the community sports calendar, continues as a way to remember Jeff Jurgens, 1985-98, who was active in sports and especially enjoyed youth basketball tournaments. One goalie, 10 skaters, five games and a whole lot of heart paved the way to the Montana Amateur Hockey Association State Peewee B Championship for a group of Glasgow Ice Dawg hockey players. The champs, 11 and 12 years old, entered last weekend's tournament in Helena with a 6-10 record and left it with the championship, going 5-0 and beating Flathead in overtime of the final. The Hinsdale Raiders shut down the Savage Warriors in the first game of the 2015 Eastern C Divisional Tournament last Thursday in Wolf Point. The Raiders jumped out to a 7 to 2 lead after one period but allowed the Warriors to play catchup and tie the score at the end of the first half of play. The first game of the girls 2015 Eastern C Tournament got underway in the Wolf Point High School gymnasium last Wednesday with the Lady Panthers of Saco/Whitewater/Hinsdale meeting the Lady Warriors of Brockton. Glasgow's U19 Lady Ice Dawgs placed third in the Montana Amateur Hockey Association State Hockey Tournament last weekend at Valley Event Center. The Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture held its 18th annual Ice Fishing Derby last Saturday at the Dredge Cuts Trout Pond at Fort Peck Lake.
