    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 22, 2014

It's about to get serious for the Scotties, Montana's top-rated Class B football team in one of the rankings. The Scotties, 8-0, retained their No. 1 ranking with MaxPreps, the CBSSports.com site for high school sports, after their 41-8 win over Plentywood last Friday. Conrad, 6-1, sits at No. 8...

  • Scotties Ranked No. 1 In State

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

BY JIM ORR THE COURIER A turnover, bad break or penalty could end this amazing possibility in a flash, but here it is: If MaxPreps' top-ranked Montana Class B Scotties shut out visiting Plentywood on Friday, they'll have shut out all of Northern 2B for the season. First came Harlem. Then Malta and Wolf Point. None scored against the Big Dawg D. Now Plentywood, 0-5, gets its shot at 7-0 Glasgow. "I don't recall a season when this has happened," GHS coach Greg Liebelt told The Courier. At this...

  • Glasgow Girls Dig The Football

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

And the winner is ... The Glasgow Scotties girls fall sports teams. None of the girls were injured in Monday night's annual Powder Puff football game before a decent crowd at Scottie Field. "Lots of current fall athletes were on the field for both teams," GHS activities director Brenner Flaten, who walked the sidelines overseeing play, told The Courier. Doing battle with plenty of emotion and some hard hitting were two teams not on the Scottie fall sports schedule: the Booty and the Beast in...

  • Glasgow Volleyball Stays On Growth Path

    For The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

Last Thursday, the Scottie volleyball teams came home with solid wins at all three levels vs. the Wolf Point Wolves. In fact, all three Glasgow teams won in three games straight. More success came Saturday at Poplar. Tuesday proved to be more challenging as the varsity fell in four games at Malta, but there's an opportunity to bounce back tonight – Senior Night – against visiting Plentywood. Proud GHS coach Lori Dailey told The Courier that the statistics against Wolf Point show that many Scotties had good games, but what they don't cap...

It's come down to this for hard-running Glasgow XC. The inaugural Plentywood invite debuts on Saturday. The state Class B cross country meet closes the season a week later on Oct. 25. For the boys, the Scotties placed second and so did sophomore Gabe Hallock in 17:41, extending his recent string of fastest individual times for GHS. Dawson...

  • Youth-Only Deer Hunt This Week

    For the Courier|Oct 15, 2014

Montana's annual youth-only deer hunt is set for Friday and Saturday this week, Oct 16 and 17. In addition, 11-year-olds who passed hunter safety may hunt if they'll be 12 by Jan. 16. The youth hunt is again scheduled during the two-day vacation for public schools in October. This puts youth rifle hunters in the field during the final days of Montana's archery season. Archers and young hunters need to be aware of the...

  • Scotties Smother Malta, 35-0

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 8, 2014

It can get better than this – as in winning the Montana Class B championship – but this one tastes sweet for the football Scotties. The 6-0 squad shut out Malta on Saturday, 35-0, its widest margin of victory in the storied rivalry since 48-0 in 1975. This Friday's 2B game at 2-4 Wolf Point looks like a tuneup for the postseason. "Our goal all along has been getting to the state championship," Scotties coach Greg Liebelt told The Courier. "We believe that we have the personnel where we can be...

  • The NFL-Plentywood Connection

    Jim Orr, The SpORRts RepORRtt|Oct 8, 2014

Dan Carpenter, the Griz kicking great who married a Plentywood farm girl, has converted his attempt to become one of the NFL's best kickers. They call him "money" these days because of his reliability to make field goals in Buffalo, where he's a big reason why the AFC East first place Bills have a 3-2 winning record. Carpenter was named the NFL Special Teams Player of the Week after the season opener, having kicked a 50-yarder and the game-winning field goal in overtime at Chicago. This past...

  • GHS Volleyball 3-2 In Conference Matches After Splitting Two

    For The Courier|Oct 8, 2014

The GHS varsity volleyball team has a record of 3-2 after conference matches with Harlem and Plentywood. Solid passing led to steady play for the girls on Thursday as they defeated the Harlem Wildcats in three games straight. Amy Breigenzer rejoined the lineup for the first time after an ankle fracture sidelined her on August 26. "Amy has been so patient during the healing process," coach Lori Dailey told The Courier. "How rewarding for her to play in front of a good home crowd after such a...

  • Glasgow XC: Girls Take First, Boys Overtake Harlem

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 8, 2014

Glasgow XC hits the Sidney Invitational on Saturday after hitting a speed bump last week in Havre. A week after the Scotties blazed through flat Fort Peck Kiwanis Park course in their own invitational, their times were bound to rise at the somewhat hilly MSU-Northern course. And they did. But the girls placed first as team, 10 points ahead of Fergus and way ahead of everyone else. Josie Braaten was the fastest girl in the field at 19:28. The boys placed fifth among teams, overtaking respected sixth-place Class B rival Harlem, which edged...

  • Glasgow XC Enjoys Some Home Cookin'

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 1, 2014

Cool. The Scottie Invitational at Kiwanis Park in Fort Peck was cool. The temperatures cooled down into the 50s on Invite Saturday, helping the Glasgow XC runners do what they set out to do. Cut times. Cool. "This year was perfect weather," junior Alex Simensen of the Glasgow girls told The Courier. The defending state champion girls placed first in the team standings with 43 points, 6 ahead of Glendive on the fast, flat course. Leading them with some season-best times were overall girls winner...

    The Courier|Oct 1, 2014

Not many wins, but a lot of memorable moments and virtual wins for your Scottie varsity volleyball girls as they traveled to Dickinson, N.D., for a tremendously challenging two-day tournament. Friday consisted of pool play against some very talented teams: Heart River, which is undefeated, Fargo Oak Grove and Minot. Scottie Pride shined through much of the day as the girls rallied to keep games close, including an incredible comeback as the Scotties made up a 4-17 deficit, barely falling to Minot HS, 20-25. "We knew we were the underdogs going...

Dealing 1B Shelby's first loss, Glasgow is the only 2B team that boasts a 4-0 record now. Racking up a whopping total of 475 yards, Glasgow showcased its most offensively charged game this season, perhaps the most in recent years. Ground and aerial attacks were fairly balanced at 211 and 253 yards, respectively. Credit must be given to the young Shelby team for playing with solid defens...

  • Wildfire Win One, Lose One

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Sep 24, 2014

The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire took it to the Brockton Lady Warriors last Friday in Hinsdale to the cheers of a small but very supportive crowd. I keep telling youse guys to come out and watch some volleyball. It's different than your grannies' volleyball from back in the day when it might take nearly a fortnight to score a point making the games last forever. These days points are made on every serve, greatly accelerating the game and making it much more exciting. That's one reason I decided to...

  • Glasgow Invite: A Good Time To Cut time

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Sep 24, 2014

The time isn't necessarily now, but it's getting there. Glasgow XC hosts its annual midseason invitational this Saturday at Kiwanis Park in Fort Peck and everyone – the girls, the boys, Coach K – is looking for some serious improvement. The Scotties consider the 3-mile course, nice and flat, as a land of opportunity and speed. With a month to go before State at Helena, cranking it up before the home crowd sounds like a plan. "We hope to cut some time," coach Rod Karst told The Courier. "We know...

  • Courier Sports Getting A New Look

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Sep 24, 2014

Greetings, Courier sports readers. The search is over for a new sports editor. It's me. Having filled in recently as an interim sports editor, I've loved getting back into sports writing. So the decision was made for me to become the sports guy and to bring on someone else to handle ad sales. In addition, The Courier welcomes back Virgil Vaupel as a sports correspondent. Double V has ended his sports writing retirement and is back on the Hinsdale beat. Janet Bailey will continue contributing Opheim sports reports to The Courier. Meanwhile, we...

  • Results Mixed For Volleyball, But C Squad Gets An 'A' So Far

    The Courier|Sep 24, 2014

After a midweek trip to Glendive, the Scottie volleyball teams came home Tuesday night with mixed reviews. The C squad prevailed and won their match in three straight games, shocking the Red Devils with their tough serving and successful offense – and maintaining a spotless record. The JV and varsity squads were not quite as lucky, falling in three and four games, respectively. "Part of the challenge can definitely be attributed to illness and injury,” coach Lori Dailey told The Courier. “We have to use a lot of players in uncomfortable posit...
