The Opheim Rodeo was held June 26, following a parade down Main Street. The event started with a presentation of flags by Tanner Solberg and Russell Solberg on horseback. After the playing of Johnny Cash's "Ragged Old Flag", Cowboy Hall-of-Famer Miles "Bud" Geer was driven into the arena in a pickup. The Courier's very own baseball team (okay, we share them with Albertsons) defeated Glasgow Distributors (GD) Monday night to become the Cal Ripken Majors city champs. GD made their way to the championship game the hard way, fighting their way through the loser's bracket and forcing a second game against Albertsons/Courier (A/C). The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed at their third swim meet of the season June 18 and 19 in Chinook, and placed seventh overall. This past weekend's meet was the first meet held in Chinook since the loss of swimmer Jesse Dannels, who died in a motor vehicle accident earlier this year. The Glasgow Reds traveled to Lewistown for a four-day tournament June 16-19. The young team was unable to snag a win until their final game of the tournament against Dickinson. The boys faced the Tri-County Cardinals for their first game Thursday morning. The Cardinals scored their one and only run in the bottom of the first inning, but it was the run that would win them the game. The 6th annual Aaron Chatten Memorial Softball Tournament drew nine teams to Fort Peck June 18 and 19. A total of 16 games were played on John Hahn Field, and Team Newton Motors (Glasgow) came in clutch on Sunday to win the championship game by two runs against the Shockers from Glendive. Newton Motors also produced both the male and the female MVPs of the tourney with Nate Doornek and Shelby Fossum taking home the honors. Cal Ripken Majors city tournament gets underway Thursday, June 16, with games scheduled through Sunday, June 19. Games will be held at Jeff Jurgens Field. Babe Ruth teams will be playing at Bill Connors Field. FES is scheduled to face Malta in a doubleheader on Friday, June 17. The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder swim team competed in their second meet of the season June 10 and 11, traveling to Scobey for two days of racing. The team was represented by considerably more swimmers than at the previous meet held in Harlem, and the Thunder earned fourth place overall. Last summer, Scobey hosted their first meet since building their new pool, and a new pool record was set for each event. The rain stopped just in time for the 18th Annual Open Golf Tournament on June 12. The teams came out to support a great cause and great community, even with 1.5 inches of rain on the course. Each of the 18 teams registered, had breakfast and were all ready to tee off by 9 a.m. Every hole featured a different game for everyone, with the winner taking home wonderful prizes donated by local businesses. The sand drags and mud bogs held at the Valley County Fairgrounds this past weekend drew a respectable number of drivers and spectators. The Sunday mud bogs was the most popular event, with nearly 300 spectators on hand to watch the competitors try to make their way through several feet of muck and mire. In addition to local drivers, some of the 20 entrants came from Billings, Plentywood, Raymond, Crane, Great Falls, and as far as Conrad to compete in the races. The second annual Scottie all-sports banquet was held Tuesday, May 31 in the St. Raphaels gymnasium. More than 300 guests attended the event, which was sponsored by the Scottie Booster Club. Area athletes that participated in Scottie sports were awarded varsity letters and received recognition for their participation in the 2015-2016 athletic season. The Glasgow Reds faced the Miles City Mavericks in their first home games of the season on Saturday, June 4. It was a beautiful day for baseball, and the Reds took advantage in their first game of the afternoon, defeating the Mavericks in their only win of the weekend. If "Northeast Montana loves fishing" isn't one of the truest statements ever made, I don't know what is. The 17th Annual Catfish Classic hosted 80 teams of two for this year's tournament. Most of the teams consisted of area and Montana residents, with some coming to fish from as far away as Indiana. Another spring sport fell victim to the weather when the Eastern B/C softball tournament was cut short on Saturday. Glasgow's lady golfers were in Shepherd to compete in the State B golf meet on May 17 and 18. With 33 schools competing, the Scotties had some work to do. Perseverance paid off for the Glasgow golfers at their divisional meet in Shelby. With likely the worst weather possible descending on them, the girls earned their third-place trophy and punched their ticket to the state meet next week.
