The Scottie cross country team competed at two separate meets last week and weekend. The first meet was held in Frazer Sept. 15, and both boys' and girls' varsity won. The Scotties faced the Baker Spartans in a hard-hitting game of football Sept. 9, giving the second ranked team a run for their money. The Scotties struggled to find their footing in the first quarter of the game. Defensively, they failed to deny the Spartans, who scored two touchdowns and had one successful two-point conversion. The Scottie cross country team successfully swept the Malta Invitational meet held Sept. 10. Leading the way for the varsity girls was Morgan Guttenberg, who placed sixth with a time of 23:11. For the boys, Merlin McKean finished second with a time of 17:42, followed immediately by Ellis McKean, who had a time of 17:43. Two 2B matches kept the Scottie volleyball team very busy last week. On Sept. 8, they hosted rival Wolf Point in a four set match. They eventually won 26-24, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, but it was a battle all night. Wolf Point came armed with size, strength and will-power that tested the Scotties on every play. The North Country Lady Mavericks faced the Brockton Lady Warriors Sept. 10, and defeated their opponents in three swift games – 25-9, 25-10, 25-9. Junior Mickayla Johnson led the team in kills with nine of the team's 17 total. Bailey Funk, also a junior, earned the one dig of the game for the Lady Mavs, and sophomore Mia Rimoldi finished the game with 12 of North Country's 20 assists. The Scottie runners competed at the Billings Invitational held Sept. 2. With nearly 30 teams in attendance and hundreds of runners, the Scotties represented well. The varsity boys team had a strong showing, placing in the upper third of the teams overall with a total score of 297, while the girls placed better than just about half of the teams that came to compete with a total score of 352. It was a busy weekend for GHS volleyball and many noisy fans came out to celebrate the occasion. The Sept. 1 home opener against Class A Glendive showcased a lot of good competition, but in the end the Red Devils proved to be too much for the Scotties, taking the match 17-25, 20-25, 25-20, 23-25. It was a long night for the Scotties, but productive nonetheless. The Scotties traveled to Glendive on Sept. 2 for their second away-game of the season, and came home with the win. In a battle of two-point conversions, safeties, fumbles and penalties, the Scotties prevailed. Montana FWPs’ Region 6 Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) will meet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Fort Peck Fish Hatchery, located at 277 Montana Highway 117, just north of Fort Peck. The meeting is open to the public and will include the induction of the newest CAC members. There will also be department updates, details about FWP’s Vision and Guide document, and wildlife, comm.ed., fisheries and law enforcement updates. Each year Choteau promises a dazzling display of high-class volleyball, and this year was no exception. Despite being a pre-season tournament, all 15 teams assembled in the gym were finely tuned and raring to go. As is customary, the Scotties were grouped in with some of the toughest teams in attendance. Glasgow Middle School boys extended a two-year winning streak by taking the team title Aug. 27 at the Poplar Invitational cross country meet. The Scotties won with 45 team points, out-distancing Plentywood, Poplar, Culbertson and a number of other teams that didn't field complete rosters. GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER Despite some of the competitors experiencing some apparent pre-race jitters, a fun time was had by all at the Fort Peck Triathlon, and the weather was perfect. As Maverick head coach Barry Malone told me at the tournament after the first game against Tri-Cities, "We made a lot of unforced errors, but all-in-all I thought we played pretty good for our first time on the court." The annual Fort Peck Triathlon is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27. Organizers have decided to change things a bit this year with a new venue and a new route for runners. The new location for the event will be at the Flat Lake boat ramp, and the running portion will take participants over the Fort Peck Dam and the Spillway. With the new route, organizers anticipate that participants will be able to enjoy great scenery changes during the race. A total of 165 people took to the streets Aug. 20 to support Veterans and get pelted with bright colored chalk. While the majority of event go-ers wore white T-shirts, some came in flamboyant bright costumes. This event contains a genuine levity that can be hard to describe with just words. The Glasgow Civic Center was the setting for a three-day wrestling camp presented by some high-caliber clinicians. The camp was held Aug. 7-9, and boasted 77 attendees. Mike Zadick and Derek St. John, both assistant coaches at Virginia Tech, led the camp with help from Billings West's head coach Jeremy Hernandez, as well as GHS coaches and other Montana High School coaches. From one corner of the state to the another, the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder traveled nearly 500 miles to Hamilton for the state swim meet July 30 and 31. When they left the Bitterroot, they had a state championship trophy, two state champion relays, two individual state champions, and a whole lot of proud supporters. The Glasgow/Fort Peck chapter of Walleyes Unlimited held their annual Women's Walleye Tournament Saturday, July 30 on Fort Peck Lake. Taking home the top prize of $1000 were Avis McDowell and Misty Williams of Froid with a total weight of 35.54 pounds caught. This year, 61 teams participated in the tournament and brought in nearly 500 pounds of walleye.
