The Scottie golfers had a great showing at the Whitewater Invitational, bringing home first-place hardware for both the girls and boys. The meet was held in Malta April 11. Leading the boys with 89 points was Blaine Myrick. Oden Hallock earned second-place with 94 points, Cody Ross placed third with 95 points, and Kaden Fossum finished ninth with 113 points. Hordes of competitors and volunteers converged on Scottie Field for the annual qualifier meet on April 17. Despite strong, gusty winds and a bone-chilling high temperature of 55 degrees, several athletes still managed to hit state-qualifying marks. For the Scotties, Benji Phillips bested the qualifying standard in the long jump by just over three inches. The Scotties won two consecutive games last week to start off their 2017 season. The team first traveled to Glendive April 6 to take on the Lady Red Devils, and came home with the 11-2 win. The Scotties had 11 runs off 16 hits and only allowed 8 hits for Glendive. The Scottie tracksters competed in three separate meets this past week. First, they traveled to Havre for the Cal Wearley Invitational on April 5. The boys placed second behind a strong Fairfield team, and the girls finished fourth overall behind Fort Benton, Havre and Chinook. Then, on April 8, most of the team made the trek to Baker with a few Scotties staying behind to compete at the Nashua Invitational in Glasgow. The Nashua Porcupines hosted 14 teams at their track meet in Glasgow on April 8. It was a productive day for Valley County athletes, with several qualifying for state and three separate school records falling. Boys high-point scorer was Riley Linder of Scobey with 38 points. The first track meet of the season drew 27 teams (215 boys and 145 girls) to Scottie Field, including one competitor from Riverton, Wyo. The meet was held April 1, and as usual, several proms were scheduled for the evening. That's only significant because several athletes were only partially focused on the competition for the day, and many of them left early for various appointments. The Bearcub track team met in the school parking lot during the early hours of April Fool's Day to share their thoughts on the performances they would give later that day in Glasgow, where they would be competing in their first meet of the season. One athlete texted that they were just down the street and another texted that they would be a few minutes late. The Glasgow Highlanders traveled to Billings March 25 and 26 for the Montana Open. The club boasted the tenth-largest team at the event with 30 wrestlers competing. With 15 placers at the event, the club also bested a 2013 record of 12 placers. Overall, the Highlanders finished 15th out of 134 teams. The Valley Event Center has another championship banner to hang in the rafters. The 2017 MAHA State Bantam Tournament was held in Glasgow March 10-12, and the Ice Dawgs captured the first ever Bantam championship for Hi-Line Youth Hockey. Glasgow finished the weekend undefeated, beating teams from Helena, Butte, Great Falls and Havre, then defeating Havre for a second time in the Sunday afternoon chipper. Bringing their basketball season to an end, the Glasgow Scotties fell to the Malta Mustangs in their third game of the Northern B Divisional basketball tournament, which was held in Cut Bank Mar. 2-4. The annual Hi-Line Skating Showcase was held March 4 at the Valley Event Center. This year's theme was "Holidays on Ice" and featured a mixture of solo skates, duets, and group performances. Beginning and ending with group presentations, the afternoon was a recital of skills learned by the program's students. The Frazer Bearcubs were underestimated by many during the 2016-2017 basketball season. Judging by the sea of columbia blue present at their games, there were also many that knew how special they were. Of the eight teams competing in the Northern B Divisional Girls Basketball Tournament, the Lady Scotties had as much of a chance as any to advance to the state tournament in Billings. This year, three teams from the division had the opportunity to punch their ticket to the big show scheduled for March 9-11. The Glasgow 19U Ice Dawgs captured third place at the Montana Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) State Tournament held in Butte Feb. 24-26. The girls advanced to the consolation game on Sunday of the tournament and brought home third-place with an 8-4 win over the Flathead Lady Fusion. The 11th annual Hi-Line Skating Showcase will be held at the Valley Event Center this Saturday, Mar. 4. The event will begin at 2 p.m., and is free of charge. Each year, student skaters show off their skills and perform for the community in the event. This year, 33 skaters, ages 3-16, will perform in the "Holidays on Ice" showcase. The High School Ice Dawgs traveled to Havre for two games on Feb. 25. The Ice Dawgs claimed a 2-1 win against the Ice Hawks in the first game with bookend goals in the first and second periods. Just two minutes into the game, Casey Mattfeldt was sent to the penalty box for tripping. No harm, no foul, however, as Havre was unable to take advantage of the power play.
