We couldn’t have asked for better conditions for the 2017 Catfish Clash, held in Williston, N.D., on Aug. 19, as 53 boats set out to conquer the Mighty Missouri. The Williston section always provides big fish and plenty of them. The days leading up to this year’s seventh-annual “Clash” were consistent and, in turn, it provided a bit of river stability that all anglers were able to enjoy. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks' Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program is sponsoring two beginning kayaking classes on Aug. 26 and 27 at the First Dredge swim beach just north of the Fort Peck Fish Hatchery near Fort Peck. The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed in their final meet of the year in Lewistown August 5 and 6. The team fell short of earning any hardware, but 16 of the 27 attending athletes advanced to finals the second day of the meet and several swimmers placed in the top twelve of their events. The combined efforts of Milk River Motorsports (MRM) and 28 team entries made for a fun demolition derby at the Northeast Montana Fair August 3. A popular Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 program that allows children and their families to check out free fishing rods and tackle is in full swing again this year. In time for summer fishing, FWP staff has restocked the 44 different location sites across Montana’s Hi-Line. The “Kids to Fish” program lets youngsters check out fishing rods, reels and use basic tackle, such as hooks, bobbers, and sinkers. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team will be facing some tough competition at the upcoming state swim meet. The Thunder will be competing in the Class A division against Glendive, Columbia Falls, Conrad and Big Sandy. Head coach Nicole Arnold explained that classifications are based on the amount of points scored during the divisional meet. A small crowd gathered to watch the Old Mil Ranch Rodeo held at the Valley County Fairgrounds on July 29. Five teams competed in five events: branding, trailering, doctoring, cow milking and stray gathering. Following the team events, an individual bronc riding competition was held. GHS will be offering additional concussion testing dates: Tuesday, August 8 at 7 p.m. and Thursday, August 10 at 7 p.m. in Room 6 at Glasgow High School. The Glasgow Reds' season came to an end at the district tournament in Miles City this past weekend. The tournament began for the boys on July 20 with a game against the hosting Mavericks, and ended on July 22 with a loss to the Dodgers out of Laurel. The Reds did knock Glendive out of the tournament on Saturday morning with an 8-7 win. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team was represented by just one dozen swimmers this past weekend at the Roundup Invitational. The final regular-season meet was held July 22 and 23, and the team placed ninth overall with 276 points. Three Thunder swimmers came home with high-point trophies for their performances at the meet. It's hard to say who was more excited for the first-ever wrestling camp held in Frazer. The campers seemed to be wound up just because they were having fun. The coaches more so because they were witnessing history. "This is the first time these gym floors have ever been covered in wrestling mats," explained Frazer's head wrestling coach Buck Turcotte. Summer heat can make for difficult days on the water. For tournament fishing, it adds a level of difficulty that is tough to quantify. This year's 9th Annual Monster Cat Roundup held in Sidney July 15 was a fine example of what you can expect when you hit the Yellowstone River in mid-July. The Reds faced the Billings Cardinals in two games at home on July 12, and sent them away with two losses. Reds 4, Billings Cardinals 2 Glasgow defeated the Cardinals by just two runs in their first match-up of the day. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team took 21 athletes to Glendive July 15 and 16. Despite very hot temperatures throughout the meet, the team finished in fifth place, and several swimmers contributed with solid performances. Leading the team with first- place finishes were Abigail Kulczyk in the 50m breaststroke, Dalton Sand in all three of his events, Bergen Miller in the 100m breaststroke, Zavier Urbin in the 100m backstroke, and Trevor Johnson, who also finished first in all three of his events.... The 2017 Montana Governor's Cup Youth Fishing Tournament was held at the Kiwanis Park fishing ponds in Fort Peck on July 8. Fishing began at 8:30 a.m. with 94 kids participating, and 89 fish were reeled in by the tournament end. The effective bait was provided by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and Scheels of Billings provided tackle boxes to each participant. The Hi-Line Sportsmen conservation club is soliciting applications for its mini-grants program.
