The Glasgow Scotties wrestling team kicked off their season with a bang over the weekend at the Havre Invite. Sophomore Cody King was the big winner over the weekend placing fourth in his weight class as he went 8-1 in the two day tournament. The Ice Dawg Squirt team headed to Kalispell’s outdoor rink this past weekend. Making the trip were Colter Barnett, Jack Cornwell, Dylan Hlad, Michael Hoyer, Gage Iman, Ian Peterson, Tatum Provencher, and Gage Siefert. The first game against Kalispell had a rocky start. At temperatures hovering near zero, Kalispell scored 30 seconds in and again 4 minutes later. The undermanned Dawgs struggled with positioning, while rotating in only two extra players. The Glasgow girls basketball team fell to Roundup in the opening game of the season 58-49. This was the first time these two schools have met and even after a defeat, Scotties head coach Emilee Morehouse is already preparing for the next opponent. “It was a nonconference game so we just have to stay positive,” said Morehouse. This weekend, Glasgow High School will host it’s first Class ‘C’ Showcase Basketball Tournament. The tournament will feature boys and girls basketball from Glasgow and surrounding communities as well as schools from outside the area such. Scottie student athletes are earning plenty of success on an off the field and court these days. Thirty-four Glasgow High School student athletes, including cheerleaders, are Academic All-State Qualifiers with the Montana Coaches Association. It's more good news for a school and athletic program that won championships this fall in cross country, football and volleyball. On Saturday the Ice Dawg high school team traveled to Havre for a pair of games against the Ice Hawks. As is normal in Havre, the games were hard-fought, physical affairs that saw a parade of players from both benches make their way to the penalty box. On Saturday, Nov. 23, the Glasgow High School Speech and Drama team competed in the Roundup B & C Invitational against 13 other teams. It is not often that Glasgow is able to compete against southern teams such as Sweetgrass, Columbus and White Sulfur Springs. Hunter numbers and reported harvests at the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 game check station outside Havre are still down when compared to past years. “Hunter numbers so far this year have only been about 2 percent lower than last year’s numbers, but they’re still down 38 percent from 2010 levels,” said Havre-area Wildlife Biologist Scott Hemmer. “Antelope and white-tailed deer are the two species that have seen the largest decreases in harvest.” Region 6 antelope and deer numbers were heavily impacted by several recent hard winters....

The Glasgow High School Speech & Drama Team competed Saturday at the Circle Invitational Meet. Sixteen schools competed at this meet; eight of them were Class B schools, three Class A and five Class C. The Glasgow team again came home with the Class B Drama trophy, earning 50 points while their closest rival, Plentywood, earned 25 and Huntley Project had 24 points. The divisional tournament is over, as is the Scottie Volleyball season. We fell to two great teams, Fairfield and Choteau, both of whom advanced to State. State wildlife officials are seeking tips from the public about the poaching of a mature bull elk on the Williamson Ranch Block Management Area south of Chinook. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Warden Dirk Paulsen said the elk was shot from the Lloyd Road just south of Cow Creek Reservoir in southern Blaine County on the night of Nov. 2. The changing face of Montana class C boys and girls sports is becoming more evident daily. Small towns across the state are losing population at an alarming rate, causing schools to lose enrollment, forcing school closures. In the school year 1999-2000, there were just two school basketball co-ops in the entire state. Scobey/Peerless and Flaxville/Outlook. Of those four schools, just one is still in operation. The Wildfire played hard and fought hard for every point in the district tournament, but they just weren’t in sync and had peaked a month early.
