Sept. 16 closed out another fine week of volleyball for GHS as they completed the first round of conference play with a 4-0 record. Wins over Poplar and Harlem sealed the deal as the Scotties emerged victorious with two efficient matches, putting them at the top of the the 2-B conference for now. Following two fairly intense competitions held in Williston and Billings, the Scottie cross country team was in Malta for a more low-key race on Sept. 9. The course, which was held at the golf course, consisted mostly of moderate rolling hills with stretches of even path for the runners to navigate. Likely the most difficult part of the course for the competitors was the slight incline just before the finish line. It was a close margin, but the Scottie volleyball team racked up another win on Sept. 7, against a very scrappy and determined M-ette team. With the exception of the first set, the entire match was a real battle as both teams saw wide swings in emotional strength and physical endurance. Lead changes were the norm, nerves wreaked some havoc and both teams had moments of brilliance and determination. Glasgow Middle School boys cross country runners swept the top four places at their home meet Sept. 8 to take first place in team rankings. The Scottie girls finished second to a strong Poplar team. The 1.5-mile race, which was held at Sullivan Park, featured teams from around the region. On the boys' side, 35 runners from Poplar, Plentywood, Frazer and Frontier competed. The Scottie volleyball team played their hearts out and it showed as they took control of the Chinook Invitational held Sept. 1-2. Pool play on Friday kept the girls busy and overall the day was successful. Playing just a single game to 30 didn't allow room for much error, but overall the Scotties played hard and eventually ended the day 3-1 (Glasgow def. Chinook 30-24; Glasgow def. The Scottie cross country team competed in their second big meet of the season Sept. 1 at the Billings Invitational. The Scottie boys placed very well overall, coming in 6th out of 23 teams. Ellis McKean led the team with his 14th-place finish and a time of 17:28.11, while Ike Braaten finished just behind him in 15th-place with a time of 17:28.34. The Scotties suffered a huge 54-0 loss in a recent pickup game against Whitehall. The game, which was held at Naranche Stadium in Butte on Sept. 1, was scheduled following the demise of Poplar's football program for the season. Glasgow's head coach, Greg Liebelt said of the disappointing loss, "We looked and played like a younger, inexperienced team - with seven new starters - playing our first game against a veteran semifinal team from last season with eight returning starters, without a doubt." Preseason is always such a learning experience for players and coaches alike. Take, for example, the Choteau tournament the GHS volleyball team attended Aug. 25 and 26. In two days, the girls played 24 games, 12 matches, coming out with a 5-7 record after competing against some of the top teams in the state. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions for the 2017 Catfish Clash, held in Williston, N.D., on Aug. 19, as 53 boats set out to conquer the Mighty Missouri. The Williston section always provides big fish and plenty of them. The days leading up to this year’s seventh-annual “Clash” were consistent and, in turn, it provided a bit of river stability that all anglers were able to enjoy. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks' Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program is sponsoring two beginning kayaking classes on Aug. 26 and 27 at the First Dredge swim beach just north of the Fort Peck Fish Hatchery near Fort Peck. The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed in their final meet of the year in Lewistown August 5 and 6. The team fell short of earning any hardware, but 16 of the 27 attending athletes advanced to finals the second day of the meet and several swimmers placed in the top twelve of their events. Notably, three Thunder swimmers earned gold medals and state champion status. The combined efforts of Milk River Motorsports (MRM) and 28 team entries made for a fun demolition derby at the Northeast Montana Fair August 3. Demolition derbys are a popular event along the hi-line this time of year. Thursday night's show was no exception as spectators packed the stands to take in the action-packed show. A popular Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 program that allows children and their families to check out free fishing rods and tackle is in full swing again this year. In time for summer fishing, FWP staff has restocked the 44 different location sites across Montana’s Hi-Line. The “Kids to Fish” program lets youngsters check out fishing rods, reels and use basic tackle, such as hooks, bobbers, and sinkers. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team will be facing some tough competition at the upcoming state swim meet. The Thunder will be competing in the Class A division against Glendive, Columbia Falls, Conrad and Big Sandy. Head coach Nicole Arnold explained that classifications are based on the amount of points scored during the divisional meet.
