  • Scottie XC Races at Frazer, Havre

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 27, 2017

The Scottie cross country team competed in two separate meets this past week. On Sept. 19, the squad traveled to Clark's Hill, just south of the Old Indian Highway, for an early evening race. The course for the Frazer meet is scenic and challenging as it is set near the Missouri River and features some demanding hills. On Sept. 23, the team was in Havre for the Blue Pony Invitational. The race for this meet is held at the MSU-Northern campus and is comparably less strenuous than the Frazer...

  • Lady Scotties Battle Tough Teams, Suffer Injuries

    Lori Dailey, For the Courier|Sep 27, 2017

GHS played a ton of volleyball this past week, all of it against outstanding teams in all classes. On Sept. 19, they traveled to Sidney for a match with the Eagles, a team they have traditionally struggled to beat. Showing true grit, the Scotties emerged victorious, thanks in large part to a remarkable display of serving by senior Ashtyn Myrick in game three. The fury of that attack fueled more aggressive serving, particularly from Kennedy Schmidt and Rachelle Glaser. Those three girls...

    Lori Dailey, For the Courier|Sep 20, 2017

Sept. 16 closed out another fine week of volleyball for GHS as they completed the first round of conference play with a 4-0 record. Wins over Poplar and Harlem sealed the deal as the Scotties emerged victorious with two efficient matches, putting them at the top of the the 2-B conference for now. Moccasin Square Garden, home of the Poplar Indians and an ever-lively crowd, is where the Scotties caught their opponents off-guard on Sept. 14. In game one, they defeated the Lady Indians 25-5, thanks...

  • XC Boys Win Malta Meet With Ease

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 13, 2017

Following two fairly intense competitions held in Williston and Billings, the Scottie cross country team was in Malta for a more low-key race on Sept. 9. The course, which was held at the golf course, consisted mostly of moderate rolling hills with stretches of even path for the runners to navigate. Likely the most difficult part of the course for the competitors was the slight incline just before the finish line. The varsity boys easily defeated their competition, scoring 34 points to win the...

  • Scottie Volleyballers Win Two Epic Battles

    Lori Dailey, For the Courier|Sep 13, 2017

It was a close margin, but the Scottie volleyball team racked up another win on Sept. 7, against a very scrappy and determined M-ette team. With the exception of the first set, the entire match was a real battle as both teams saw wide swings in emotional strength and physical endurance. Lead changes were the norm, nerves wreaked some havoc and both teams had moments of brilliance and determination. The scores tell the story well: 25-12, 17-25, 25-20, 21-25, 17-15 The GHS C squad fell to Malta...

  • Scotties Win Chinook Invitational

    Lori Dailey, For The Courier|Sep 6, 2017

The Scottie volleyball team played their hearts out and it showed as they took control of the Chinook Invitational held Sept. 1-2. Pool play on Friday kept the girls busy and overall the day was successful. Playing just a single game to 30 didn't allow room for much error, but overall the Scotties played hard and eventually ended the day 3-1 (Glasgow def. Chinook 30-24; Glasgow def. Cut Bank 30-19; Glasgow def. Highwood-Geraldine 30-17; Simms def. Glasgow 30-20). Saturday offered more traditiona...

  • Scotties Shut Out by Whitehall

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 6, 2017

The Scotties suffered a huge 54-0 loss in a recent pickup game against Whitehall. The game, which was held at Naranche Stadium in Butte on Sept. 1, was scheduled following the demise of Poplar's football program for the season. Glasgow's head coach, Greg Liebelt said of the disappointing loss, "We looked and played like a younger, inexperienced team - with seven new starters - playing our first game against a veteran semifinal team from last season with eight returning starters, without a doubt." Liebelt also noted that it's difficult to compet...

  • Scotties Face Tough Competition in Choteau

    Lori Dailey, For the Courier|Aug 30, 2017

Preseason is always such a learning experience for players and coaches alike. Take, for example, the Choteau tournament the GHS volleyball team attended Aug. 25 and 26. In two days, the girls played 24 games, 12 matches, coming out with a 5-7 record after competing against some of the top teams in the state. Over the course of the tournament, the Scotties faced off against four of the top six finishers: Choteau, Florence Carlton, Ennis and Shelby (who the Scotties actually beat twice on...

  • Flaten-Plouffe Make a "Splash" at the "Clash"

    Blake Gauer, For the Courier|Aug 30, 2017

We couldn’t have asked for better conditions for the 2017 Catfish Clash, held in Williston, N.D., on Aug. 19, as 53 boats set out to conquer the Mighty Missouri. The Williston section always provides big fish and plenty of them. The days leading up to this year’s seventh-annual “Clash” were consistent and, in turn, it provided a bit of river stability that all anglers were able to enjoy. Weather on the day of the event was about as ideal as one could hope for. Air temperatures stuck in the mid 80s, storms stayed by the wayside, river flows (alt...
