The Northeast Montana Relay For Life (RFL) had their 2018 kickoff event March 23, at the Valley Event Center with the Skate For A Cure event. About 30 players participated in the hockey game and an estimated 100 people attended. A 50/50 drawing was held with the winner donating the funds back to the RFL. Paddlefish anglers planning to harvest a fish in the Upper Missouri River (From Fort Peck Dam to Fort Benton) will need to apply for an Upper Missouri River Paddlefish Tag. The Glasgow Highlanders sent a record 51 competitors to the State AAU Tournament in Great Falls March 9-11. They joined nearly 1,300 other young grapplers and 87 other teams at the event and turned heads with the depth of talent coming out of Glasgow. The Highlanders proved a force to be reckoned with as they produced two state champions, six runners-up, and 23 total placers at the tournament. The 20th Annual Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament kicks off in Glasgow this weekend, beginning on Friday, March 16 and going through Sunday, March 18. The tournament, which is geared towards boys and girls fourth grade through 10th grade, boasts nearly 85 teams this year. While the tournament will consist of some Friday night games, the bulk of the tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday with games scheduled in several gyms all day. Hockey season in Glasgow officially came to a close this past weekend as the 14U girls and the Bantam boys competed in their final state tournaments March 9-11. The 14U girls traveled to Williston to compete in the NDAHA 14U tournament. I believe that student involvement in high school sports is one of the surest ways for young adults to learn many life lessons. Unfortunately, not all of those life lessons are positive. Each season, without fail, there seems to be a controversy spurred on by the behavior of a parent, coach, referee, player, fan, or even school administration. There is way too much negativity in high school athletics. The only good that comes from being negative is getting the athletes to fight amongst each other and to not support one another or the coaching staff. Being negative only hurts the athletes. The first weekend in March brought the hockey season to an end for three of the Ice Dawg teams. Glasgow High School's Kennedy Schmidt signed a letter of intent on Feb. 28 to play hockey for the Minot State University (MSU) Beavers. According to officials at MSU, while Schmidt is the fourth recruit to commit to playing for the Beavers, she is the first American to join the team for the 2018-2019 season. It's an early Saturday morning as I walk into the high school gym. I take a deep breath, and the smell of wrestling mats engulf my nostrils. The Ice Dawg Squirts headed into the state tournament with a MAHA record of 15-1-0. The Glasgow Scotties closed out their 2017-2018 season with one win out of three games at the divisional tournament held in Glasgow Feb. 22-24. The Glasgow Highlanders had another dominating performance over the weekend. The youngsters crowned 16 champions and 31 top-three finishers overall at the Sidney Invitational held Feb. 24.
