  • Longest Dam Race

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Jun 24, 2020

All shortness of breath on June 20 at Kiwanis Park was not cause for concern. The 26th Annual Longest Dam Race continued on as planned on June 20 with 263 total registrants for the event, including 20 who signed up for the virtual portion of the races. The day started off on the chilly side before the sun came out from behind the clouds and a slight breeze off the dam kept athletes from overheating. Considerations were taken to protect the health and wellbeing of participants from the novel...

  • 3 Club Tourney at Sunnyside

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Jun 17, 2020

Golf in the best of conditions is a challenging game. Whipping wind is expected in northeast Montana and adds another degree of difficulty. Limiting golfers to just three clubs for 18 rounds is a recipe for entertainment, for observers if not the participants. A bevy of colorful phrases was heard across the course as golfers struggled to put their little dimpled ball in the hole in an acceptable number of strokes during the 3 Club tournament at Sunnyside Country Club on June 13. At the end of...

  • Kids Keep it Reel

Dozens of kids and their support teams gathered at Home Run Pond at Sullivan Park on June 6 to cast their chances at taking home the biggest fish in the Walleyes Unlimited Kids' Fishing Tournament. The wind was knocked down by the surrounding trees, the bugs were off on other business and the fish were biting. "I think everyone out here has caught at least one fish today," said Jill Thompson, whose sons participated in the tournament. Normally, a hopeful fisherman can hope for a bite or two,... Full story

As of May 30, inspectors have caught 12 boats with invasive zebra or quagga mussels and one boat with red rim melania snails attached to watercraft. All boat owners must have their watercraft inspected when entering Montana. Last week, a pontoon boat that was purchased in Minnesota came...

  • Legion Baseball is Back - Again, Maybe

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|May 20, 2020

The game of cautiously optimistic wait-and-see continues for the Glasgow Reds this year. But hope is winning out. “As long as we get to Phase 2, we will have a season,” said Board President Mike Pehlke. Recent reporting said that American Legion had canceled their season nationwide, leading to confusion for players and fans. “The media got it kind of confused,” Pehlke explained. “Legion canceled their insurance, or supplementing our insurance, but not the season.” The reasoning behind that decision has to do with fairness - some regions of...

This year 51 boats took over the waters of America's longest free-flowing river to net massive cats, but only one team could become the champs. The Flatens managed a basket of 29...

  • America's Past Time Eager for America's Reopening

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Apr 29, 2020

Perhaps one aspect of life Americans have been missing most during the sweep of the coronavirus across the country and the resulting shelter in place orders has been sports. Athletics, professional and amateur, play a defining role in American life, and the sport most closely associated with all things American is baseball. And now, with Governor Steve Bullock instituting a phased reopening of the state, baseball may be the sport that will fill everyone's sports void. Students, fans and coaches...

  • Casterline Named Class B Wrestling Coach of the Year

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Apr 15, 2020

To say 2019 and 2020 were good years for the Glasgow Scotties wrestlers would be to understate it just slightly. At the end of the 2019 season, the Scotties had put up two individual state champs-Colton Fast and Dylan Nieskens-and claimed a silver trophy. It was a catalyst for 2019-2020, which propelled the Scotties onto a championship season amplified by 10 state qualifiers, seven state placers and three individual state champs-adding Cooper Larson to 2019's list. It was unsurprising then that...

While the tournament went much the way the season did for the young team, coach Landon Holte told the Courier, “Kids played very hard and never gave up this whole season.” That hard work did lead to a couple of close games for the Dawgs but unfortunately the team was not able to secure any wins over the weekend. Glasgow faced off against Havre on Friday night and the Dawgs dropped the game by a single goal,...

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 19, 2020

You would have been forgiven if you had worried about the Scotties' chances at the State Tournament in Billings on Feb. 14 and 15. A tough season with a number of challenges, illnesses, injuries, a second-place finish to Huntley Project at Divisionals and a series of peaks and valleys at State had set the tone at the close of business Friday at Metra Park. That tone was short-lived however, and on Saturday morning the Scotties rallied to go undefeated in their first seven matches of the second...
