  • DNC Working to Snoop on Text Messages

    Chris McDaniel, Publisher|Jul 28, 2021

Wow. We really are living in George Orwell's "1984." Or, at least, such a possibility is in sight. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is seeking to work with cell phone companies to prevent text messages including "misinformation" about COVID-19 vaccines from being delivered to recipients. According to an article published by Politico, "Biden allied groups, including the Democratic National Committee, are ... planning to engage fact-checkers more aggressively and work with SMS carriers to... Full story

  • Each Traffic Stop Could Be a Life or Death Scenario

    Tyler Edwards, GPD Interim Chief|Jul 28, 2021

It's 3 a.m. on an unusually dark night, when you receive an alert from dispatch. It's a description of a vehicle involved in a recent shooting close two towns away. You don't think much of it, but it's in the back of your mind the vehicle could be coming this way as the driver makes their escape. A short time later as you're driving around and doing routine business checks, off in the distance you see a pair of headlights coming toward you. It appears the vehicle is going much faster than the...

  • Technology and My Cat

Richard Noble, Special to the Courier|Jul 28, 2021

Pet ownership. Of all the things which have come a long way in the last few decades, this might be my favorite. As people, we're able to enjoy all of the wonderful advances which ameliorate our days and make our lives more convenient. What's interesting to me, though, is how we can now employ devices to make owning animals even more delightful, even enriching their lives while we're at it. I have a cat. She's a 15-month-old rescue, and I thoroughly enjoy her company. What's different between her...

  • A Deadline, is a Deadline, is a Deadline

    Mary Honrud, Green Spaces|Jul 28, 2021

EDITOR'S NOTE: This column was slated to run in the July 21 edition, but was held due to lack of space. In case anyone who isn’t advertising in or writing columns for the Glasgow Courier hasn’t noticed yet, the deadline for each week’s issue has been moved up from noon on Monday to 5 p.m. the previous Friday. That means, for those of who live outside Glasgow and depend on the U.S. mail service, our weekly Courier arrives on Thursday, not Wednesday, so that what we submit is almost a week old before we see it in print. Dawdling (or procr...

  • 'There I was, Just Minding My own Business...'

Frank and LIn Vargo, Adventures in St. Marie|Jul 28, 2021

You've heard it before, "So there I was, just minding my own business, when all of a sudden..." Well, just when you thought that it might be reaching the finality of things happening in St. Marie, it happened again! The residents on the Western leg of Ash street were without water due to a main break for 15 days. Then, on July 18, Water District manager Rob Esaia told us he had to locate and repair another water main break, this time on Country Club. As of July 23, Rob stated everything is...

  • Suffering Through the Heat

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Jul 28, 2021

As we are suffering through this heat it may help to remember the other extremes. Do you remember the winter of 1949 & 50? I do not know the months, and no, I did not call the weather service, but some remember having two nights in a row of -55 degrees on a home thermometer. Many rural folks heated their homes with stove fuel oil at that time. Due to the extreme cold the stove fuel gelled up causing the stove to go out. This might be compared to our current situation and no air-conditioning. Fortunately, many had electricity by then and were...

  • We Have Water! YAY!

Frank and Lin Vargo, Special to the Courier|Jul 21, 2021

I received a message from Saint Marie's Water Manager, Rob Esaias, on Monday, July 12th that he had the water main fixed. A word of warning goes with this if you EVER have a water break. We were told to make sure you do not use your water filters right away and to run the water for awhile. This will clear the lines of silt from the pipes. We also had been told to make sure you do not run your water through your hot water heater until the water is running clear. Even though this was a... Full story

  • I'm Going to Make a Traffic Stop

    Tyler Edwards, GPD Interim Chief|Jul 21, 2021

Traffic stops on the surface seem very simple and straight forward. From the outside looking, in these stops may appear as if someone did something inherently wrong or malicious. In general, the reason for stop is usually informative in nature for the driver. Traffic stops are one of the most dynamic things that an officer performs. One of a patrol officers' main functions is to inform the driver about improper driving behavior or defective vehicle equipment. These dynamic interactions are...

  • How Much Screen Time? Avoiding Digital Burnout.

    Richard Noble, Want For Tech|Jul 21, 2021

The connected world in which we live is great, isn't it? Email in your pocket, books on your tablet, movies just a tap away on your television. But how much is too much when it comes to these marvels? Is there something more to that tired-eyed, slightly rough feeling we get when we've had a long day in front of the computer? For most of us, some amount of time staring at some kind of interactive device is inevitable. Be it through our job, how we keep up with friends and family or as a hobby in... Full story

  • Speed Limit Sign Needed

    Jul 14, 2021

Speed Limit Sign Needed There is a problem for people in northeast Glasgow between the high school, middle school and church. We have encountered hazards. First, a 15 mph sign on the west end of Angus Street has been removed. On the east side at Cloud Street, there is a sign that says "SLOW." Does this mean 25 mph? Now, on Angus and also on Cloud, people have said it is just about impossible to back out of their garages because of traffic. They must back in their garages or driveways. We live... Full story

  • Biden Administration Admits Defunding Police Doesn't Work

    Chris McDaniel, Courier Publisher|Jul 14, 2021

Talk about hypocrisy. The Biden Administration is now touting efforts to fund police in a knee-jerk reaction to a massive increase in violence nationwide. This comes on the heels of 2020 when the Democrat platform did virtually nothing to denounce violent protesters across the country who torched cities as they chanted "defund the police." While Biden never came out and said directly the words, "defund the police," he did answer a question asking if he was willing to redirect funding away from police departments. "Yes, absolutely," he said. Thi... Full story

  • President Biden's Gun Crime Strategy

    The White House|Jul 14, 2021

In June, President Biden unveiled a comprehensive strategy to combat gun violence. This strategy implements preventative measures that are proven to reduce violent crime, and attacks the root causes – including by investing in effective community policing and addressing the flow of firearms used to commit crimes. Combined, the Administration's comprehensive strategy will: • Stem the flow of firearms used to commit violence, including by holding rogue firearms dealers accountable for violating fe... Full story

  • Why are the Cops Following Me?

    Tyler Edwards, GPD Interim Chief|Jul 14, 2021

A very common complaint against patrol officers is that they followed a vehicle for an extended period of time for no apparent reason. Being in a small town; our officers are trained to have a great understand about what is going on in their community during their shift. Patrol officers are also trained to recognize oddities while on patrol. That is something not normal from what they see every day. Most of the time, it is a subtle driving behavior or avoidance of law enforcement. Commonly, the...

  • Repentance Necessary to Escape God's Wrath

Pastor John Vallie, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod|Jul 14, 2021

"But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, 'Raca,' [worthless] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell." Matthew 5:22 The setting of out text is the Sermon on the Mount, the greatest sermon ever preached. And, Jesus here starts with the Fifth Commandment, "You shall not murder." The Fifth Commandment is the commandment that you would think...

  • Facebook Encourages Users to Become Snitches

    Chris McDaniel, Courier Publisher|Jul 7, 2021

Not that I have any respect for Facebook, but if I did, they would have lost it. Again. It seems the company founded by Mark Zuckerberg, the reigning Technocrat in Chief, isn't content with only sucking up personal data about the cattle, er, I mean users, who feed at the virtual trough, and then selling such data to the highest bidders. Now, everyone's favorite Big Brother has become the thought police. And, the company is even going so far as to encourage users to rat each other out if there is... Full story

  • Six VCSO Deputies Can Now make Arrests on Reservation

    Tom Boyer, Valley County Sheriff|Jul 7, 2021

On Thursday, June 10, six officers from the Valley County Sheriff's Office completed their cross-deputization training with Chief of Police Jim Summers of the Fort Peck Tribal Law and Justice Office. Training was conducted at the Valley County Courthouse. The presentation included four hours of cultural sensitivity, case law and a history of Assiniboine and Sioux culture. I have been working with Chief Summers for the past three years to bring cross-deputization to fruition. Covid-19 was a...

  • The Fear Surrounding Technology

    Richard Noble, Want for Tech|Jul 7, 2021

As a technology professional of over 15 years, I can wholeheartedly assure you that your phones, smart devices and televisions are not listening to your conversations. Well, other than when they are. But, where do these sensational stories come from; why is it commonly accepted that ads about trampolines or headphones or sunglasses must be "Facebook listening in?" The answer, it turns out, is a good story. Consider first how far we've come, for a moment. The first iPhone, which preceded even an...

  • Calling All Citizen Journalists!

    Chris McDaniel, Courier Publisher|Jun 30, 2021

As I continue on the journey of revamping this newspaper, I am preparing for the next phase to begin. But, to do it, I will need your help. You see, I am a one man show when it comes to news coverage. Luckily, I don't have to worry about Sports because our own Gwen Honrud has that covered nicely. For much else, I am similar to the Eye of Sauron. For you all that don't know, The Eye of Sauron sat atop Barad-dur in Mordor in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The eye, when focused on something,... Full story

  • Among Despair, Hope Through Christ

    Pastor John Vallie, LCMS|Jun 30, 2021

"For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope." Romans 8:20 If my understanding is correct, we seed winter wheat in the fall. The seed then sits in the ground during winter. When everything is all wintry and snowy, plant life is hard to imagine. But, come spring, the winter wheat grows. Even though surrounded by the cold and gray of a Montana winter, that little seed in the ground is very alive. Winter wheat reminds us, even though the... Full story

  • Publisher's Desk

    Chris McDaniel, The Courier|Jun 23, 2021

It seems marijuana is still a bit of a sticky-icky subject in Montana. Last month, Governor Gianforte signed HB 701 into law. The bill outlines the regulations for marijuana commercialization, some of the most stringent among states in the USA which have legalized recreational pot. HB 701 comes on the heals of the passage of Initiative 190, which allows for the use, production and sale of marijuana in Montana. I-190 took effect on Jan. 1. It remains technically illegal on the federal level to... Full story

  • Police Chief's Desk

    Tyler Edwards, GPD Interim Chief|Jun 23, 2021

The Glasgow Police Department reminds our community about their local fireworks ordinance. This ordinance was created to allow the youth the opportunity to light minor fireworks off in the city limits with their family. The old ordinance did not allow any fireworks in the city limits. The revamped ordinance came into effect in 2017. The Glasgow Fire Department and the Glasgow Police Department would like community to participate in the 4th of July fun under this ordinance, but to be considerate... Full story

    Chris McDaniel, Courier Publisher|Jun 16, 2021

This weekend, as I was out at the Missouri River Recreation Area for Youth near Fort Peck Dam photographing and interviewing the latest crop of Boy Scouts, I was suddenly 12-years-old again and a Boy Scout myself. It was in the mid- to late-1990s when I was in Troop 64 back in Arizona. My patrol was "The Angry Beavers." Unfortunately, the Troop no longer exists except in the memories of those who were there. There were so many memories made in my three to four years in Troop 64. When I first... Full story

Soroptimist Board of Directors, Glasgow Chapter|Jun 16, 2021

The Local Soroptimist International of Glasgow was organized to support and improve the lives of women and girls. The local Thrift Store is the main source of income to achieve this goal. WE donate approximately $38,000 a year to Valley County and the Glasgow community. This money is distributed in many forms: dental assistance, classroom projects, Milk River Activity Center, Scottie Day Care, Childrens' Museum, Valley View Home, Women's Christmas and Easter gifts. And, most recently, a pledge... Full story

    Diane-Betty-Yvonne-Charles-Ashley and Amber, New York State|Jun 16, 2021

Our family from New York and Pennsylvania had a week long adventure in Middle of Nowhere, MT. Most of us had not previously seen your wonderful state or been on a ranch. Our visit was packed with numerous great experiences. We want to give special thanks to Sterling Carroll for hosting us, Terry White for being our local guide, and the Christensen family for teaching us some of the work required for calves. We were made to feel at home on Mr. Carroll's beautiful property. Terry shared some of... Full story

    Interim Chief Tyler Edwards, GPD|Jun 16, 2021

Editors Note: This is Part One of a multiple issue series. Read next week's edition to find out how a traffic stop looks through a police officer's eyes. For most people this could be their first interaction with law enforcement. What most of us have seen on the news has everyone worried and on edge with what will happen next. The Glasgow Police Department has been doing informative stops with the driver's education class for the past few years in an effort to allow first time drivers the...
