Have you ever noticed how something that was popular 30 or 40 years ago suddenly becomes the rage again? For instance, tie-dye clothing. In the 1970s it was seen everywhere. There were tie-dye shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, jackets. You could even buy matching tie-dye shirts and pants. Now, 40 years later, you can find tie dye clothing – and even shoes and purses – in just about any store you go into. Remember autograph books? In the late 1950s and early 1960s, practically every high school student had them. I did. When I explained to my mot...
Dear Editor: Beset with problems with the water system and the financial burden associated with the costs to make needed repairs, the Opheim Town Council, on Nov. 11, 2013, ordered that the base rate for water (no charge for amount of water used) be increased from $50 to $60 per month, or 20 percent. This is entirely reasonable as users should expect to pay for any services provided for their benefit. However, included in this same order was a provision that the turn-on fee be increased from $50 to $125 and the turn-off fee be increased from...
The Glasgow City-County Library is happy to announce that we are on track to have a new look by the end of July. Our new look will include both interior and exterior updates in specific areas of the library. While we are under transformation, we will be challenged to stay up and running while clearing out the entire children’s area and circulation area. Quite frankly, there will be a few days where we just cannot maintain safety of our patrons and our doors will have to be closed. Most days we will be open. However, some items – books, mov...
How many times have you sorted through “junk” and really looked at it? I picked up an old Coca-Cola pop bottle the other day and noticed "Glasgow, Mont.," on the bottom of the bottle. Someone needs to help me here. I remember when Coke was bottled in Glasgow, but did these bottles get recycled by being sent back to the original distributor? I have also seen bottles with "Havre, Mont.," on the bottom. I am sure there were many others around also. I know that our society was not as mobile as it is now, but I may have to do a little research on...
I recently received an email newsletter from U.S. Rep. Daines, who is doing his very best to “protect and defend” in Washington, D.C. The subject was “Only the Iraqis can secure their future.” The letter went on to say and I quote directly, “Dear friend, Last night I voted for an amendment to the Defense appropriations bill to prevent more American troops in Iraq. “I strongly oppose sending more American troops to Iraq and believe only Iraqis can secure their future. “Iraqi leadership must address the concerns of their citizens from all sect...
*++++++++++++++++++ gvbhhhhhhj I'm not sure what the above line says. It was typed by my cat, Holly, who has no qualms about walking across my computer keyboard. At times she has signed me out of a website, brought up an ad, and typed comments in my chat room. One day I was reading an article about a little boy who was knocked off his bicycle by the neighbor's dog and how the boy's cat chased the dog away before it could bite the child. My cat was looking at the pictures and when she saw the one of the cat, she stretched out her paw and placed...
Remember when it was not uncommon to see livestock within the city limits of small communities, including Glasgow? Rural residents that moved into town during the school year often brought the milk cow and chickens along. These were animals that needed daily care as well as providing food for the families and chores for the kids. I can remember stories of measures taken to save these valuable animals during one of the big floods in Glasgow. There is a cute little house on the south side of Glasgow that was once a barn, with a loft, that housed...
If there’s one thing I love about summer, it’s the heat. Call me crazy, but growing up in Southern Idaho made me a desert rat. There’s nothing like heading out to a lake, river or creek on a hot day hanging out with a cold beer with your feet in the water. It seems those dog days of summer are still a few weeks off, as the rain is finally catching up and the storms roll through in June. While I might not be headed to the lake just yet for a little swimming and summer fun, it is time to prep for the season. Todd Tryne of Fish, Wildlife & Parks...
I pay close attention to our law enforcement and court reports. I take note in my mind on certain things going on in our community. One thing I've been paying attention to, is where people are getting pulled over at, and what they end up getting ticketed for. It might be a strange habit, but I've always paid attention to traffic issues wherever I am. Part of that comes from a cousin of mine. He was a football star, in college, had a lot going for him and a tragic accident took his life. I was only 13. It was a shock to most of the family. The...
Last week we decided to go visit my husband's brother, Bob, who lives in Boulder. Since we wanted to spend most of the week with him and it's a 400-mile drive to his home, we left on Sunday and drove as far as Havre, where we stayed overnight with our niece. When we visit Bob, we always go to the secondhand stores in Helena and Butte. Bob and I thoroughly enjoy hunting for "treasures." This trip, Bob suggested we take a day trip to Anaconda. I'd never been there, so I was all for it. We started off by driving through Whitehall Pass -- an...
The venerable Barry Goldwater warned that,“Unlimited campaign spending eats at the heart of the democratic process. It feeds the growth of special interest groups created solely to channel money into political campaigns. It creates an impression that every candidate is bought and owned by the biggest givers. And it causes elected officials to devote more time to raising money than to their public duties.” Goldwater's foresight was right. Congress will be in session only 123 days this year. They'll have a lot more time, on the public dime, to...
Do you remember some of the methods of discipline your parents used when you were a child? I don’t remember that “time out” was in my parents' vocabulary. I remember a lot of threats like, “If I have to come up there (upstairs), you are going to be sorry!” Of course, most of you were like my siblings and me; you knew by the tone of voice whether or not you would get warned once or twice more before action was taken. Here's another illusion some of you may remember. I was always told that if I were put in jail for some reason, the only thin...
Has political correctness (and our own Constitution) given in to the Muslim radicals who would rid America of our cherished Christian beliefs? By my unofficial count, those people have cost America thousands of lost lives, thousands of lost work days and at least two trillion, and counting, taxpayer dollars. And the loss of life and dollars keep accelerating as we speak. Have you been on an airplane recently and through the TSA searches? That program has cost taxpayers billions of dollars, and I don't think anyone in government can state, empha...
June is the traditional month for weddings. Do you remember when weddings were followed up by friends and relatives with a chivaree (or shivaree)? Since I had to look up the spelling of the word, I did learn that it means “mock serenade.” I just remember it as a fun time for the instigators, but not necessarily fun for the recipients. Remember the noise of banging on pots and pans, ringing of cowbells and all of the whooping and hollering that went with it? I am sure that some of you remember the pranks that were played on the bride and gro...

You might say I'm a food addict. I'm a self pledged foodie who loves to go home and spend time cooking unique and interesting dinners. While I find it relaxing, it can be a double-edged sword. It takes my mind of the day's events and those nagging, persistent troubles that hang around. I also end up taking in a few more calories, as I take a few extra bites here and there to “test” the quality. Every good chef does that right? Unfortunately that love of food has also been the struggle of my life. I'm sure millions of Americans and hundreds of...
On my Facebook page a couple days ago, a great-nephew posted a picture of the Morel mushrooms he and his sons had found. Looking at the mushrooms, I could taste them. Oh, how I was wishing I had some to cook. I grew up in southeast Iowa, where Morel mushrooms are plentiful. They are, to me, the Cadillac of mushrooms. Every spring, along about the end of April or first of May, Dad would say it was time to go mushroom hunting. My brother and I would grab our buckets and off we'd go. Before long we were pushing through the timber looking for...
When you have hunted, hiked, worked, and snowmobiled – you name it – on Forest Service land for decades you can begin to feel as if you had an entitlement to that land. Call it the right of possession by proximity and use; but because no one knows that land like we do, or uses it like we do, we feel we should have a say in how it’s managed. Some people think Montana should have the ownership, as well, and that’s going too far. First of all, when Montana was granted statehood in 1889, we agreed to the terms of the Enabling Act passed by Congres...
It’s a big idea and it’s rightfully reaping big debate nationwide. Can and should states assume control of federally held public lands within our borders? Many colleagues and experts throughout the west have studied the issue intensively, and we now believe there’s no reason why we can’t. The challenge is to get the facts on the table, put protections in place consistent with Montana values, and prepare our state agencies for an orderly transition. Montana’s study of public lands shows Montanans want more multiple use access, reduction...
Gov. Bullock's office released this memo May 23 from him to Jan French of the Board of Livestock, with his directive for bison management as hazing operations begin around Yellowstone National Park, including on private property. • As provided by Section 81-2-120, MCA, the management of buffalo or wild bison by the Department of Livestock is to be conducted pursuant to a plan that is approved by me. Under that statute, the Department may enter private property to remove bison if the bison are infected with a dangerous disease and that d...
College, high school and eighth grade graduation ceremonies are taking place in the nation's schools. It is a time of joy, smiles, hugs and tears. Graduation is a major milestone in a person's life ... no matter what age they are. All the work in the classroom and nights of studying culminate in the student being handed a certificate that states all requirements have been met for graduation. Like it or not, graduates will not remember what the speeches were about at the graduation ceremony. Very few ever do. I sure don't. On the day of my high...
This is the week I lose a little sleep. My mind wanders to a date, a time and a different place in my life. Seven years ago, everything changed, June 3, 2007. It’s a sad day I’ll never forget, and it’s why during Memorial Day those around me will notice that I give an extra pause, and shed a few more tears. I was a military wife. When I mention to people I’m an ex-Army wife, I usually get the brush off. I suddenly don’t count, but even during the end of my marriage, my ex still recognized the sacrifices I made to my country. Some reading t...
I was reminded on Memorial Day that the day was set aside to remember and honor our veterans. It is also a day when we remember all of our deceased family and friends. If you grew up in a small community, you also had the privilege of keeping that final resting place one of peace and beauty. What a way to keep in touch with our roots. If you take the time to wander around a community cemetery, read the headstones, straighten a bouquet or two, pull a few weeds, you will find all kinds of memories flooding your mind. You remember the stories of...
Dear Editor: I am writing to support the upcoming levy of 2 mills for the City-County Library. The library has been on a bare-bones budget for some time and desperately needs a better base from which to work. It is estimated that these two mills would cost less than $10 on a home with a taxable market value of $200,000. Glasgow has had a proud tradition of having a really effective library, and we offer many services that you might not be aware of until you are needing just that service. With schools about to close for the summer, the library o...
Dear Editor: This June 3 our City-County Library will be on the ballot for mill levy approval. At this time, our budget is underfunded. We have applied for grants, solicited donations and received financial support from Friends of the Library for our children’s shelves and we still need to make more cuts in our budget. There are also some structural improvements needed to our library that we cannot address. The basement should be accessible to all. Heating, lighting and damaged windows are just some of the issues. Our public library is f...
