Our summer reading program drew to a close with a celebration of everyone's accomplishments. There was drink, cake, snacks and prizes. Not a lot of opposition showed up to the city council meeting on Monday, Aug. 18, as the Glasgow City Council made a final motion to approve the change to an ordinance allowing standing headstones on certain sections of the Highland Cemetery. A U.S. congressional candidate with Glasgow ties visited town Monday, Aug. 18. He explained that his mother was from Glasgow and his father from Glendive. He grew up in Whitefish and could remember, clearly, a football game for the championship against Glasgow that is still talked about by those who remember. Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. filed a natural gas rate increase request with the Montana Public Service Commission Friday. As the mile markers pass by on roads across the state, several volunteer drivers in Valley County have been doing their part to help out local veterans in Eastern Montana. An arrest was made on Friday, Aug. 8, after an investigation led to a search warrant. St. Marie resident Antonio Hernandez, 31, was arrested and charged with possession of dangerous drugs – felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia – misdemeanor. The drug was reportedly methamphetamine. Any presence of methamphetamine is a felony charge in the state of Montana. The Havre Police Department has been awarded $179,833.76 from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program for the Tri-Agency Drug Task Force for the 2014-15 grant year. It's money that will help the Glasgow area. This photo shows Til Hagen to the left and Clyde Flint holding some pretty tall corn in front of the Frazer Hardware store in 1922. The corn stalks were from Sherman McCune's broom corn south of the river. Frazer was a busy town during this time, as it was a place for bootlegging traffic. His coworkers described him as very intelligent, dedicated and a hard worker. Tragedy struck Saturday when Robert Lee Irwin, 53, of Glasgow, was killed while doing maintenance on a Fossum Ready Mix truck at the Fossum gravel pit north of the city, investigators said. He was found dead at the scene. Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier described it a job-related accident. Irwin had worked for Fossum for 34 years. The accident is still under investigation. Dispatch received the call right around 6 p.m. last Thursday. Mike Doney, Celina Brien and their 2-year-old were out celebrating his birthday when they received a call from a neighbor. The family's home was fully engulfed by the time firetrucks pulled up to the scene on Tihista Road, east of Nashua. A fatal traffic accident took place Saturday on Highway 24, near mile marker 35 in McCone County near Fort Peck. Two women were in the vehicle when the driver tried to avoid a deer in the road and lost control of the vehicle, investigators said. The driver was wearing a seatbelt. The passenger, Samantha Conn, 27,of Morehead, Kentucky, was not and she was ejected from the vehicle. Conn was reported dead on the scene. This photo is of Wheeler, a town that was adjacent to the Fort Peck Dam site, built on a barren hill. It was taken July 30, 1934. The community was named after Sen. Burton K. Wheeler, Montana's senior senator. Wheeler no longer exists, and hardly a trace remains in the area. It was a bittersweet ceremony as the Northeast Montana Relay for Life began on Friday, July 25. The young, the old, the healthy and the sick gathered with one mission in common, to raise funds to fight cancer and to take a stand against something that impacts almost everyone. A hearing was set for Thursday, July 31, but District Judge Blair Jones signed off on a motion for summary judgement, dismissing the plaintiff's claims without prejudice and awarding attorney's fees and costs to Jeffrey Robertson. While the battle might not be fully over, to this point it seems no one really won in this case that has lingered in Fort Peck for years. The Drug Task Force and Valley County Sheriff's Office produced a search warrant for two local residents in Glasgow on Friday, July 25. That searched turned up several charges and arrests.
