This photo is of Wheeler, a town that was adjacent to the Fort Peck Dam site, built on a barren hill. It was taken July 30, 1934. The community was named after Sen. Burton K. Wheeler, Montana's senior senator. Wheeler no longer exists, and hardly a trace remains in the area. While this photo just shows the beginnings of the town, it grew much larger in size by the end of the Fort Peck Dam project.... Full story
It was a bittersweet ceremony as the Northeast Montana Relay for Life began on Friday, July 25. The young, the old, the healthy and the sick gathered with one mission in common, to raise funds to fight cancer and to take a stand against something that impacts almost everyone. The National Weather Service in Glasgow had a busy day last week as warnings were issued for a storm that ended up moving rapidly through Valley County. A hearing was set for Thursday, July 31, but District Judge Blair Jones signed off on a motion for summary judgement, dismissing the plaintiff's claims without prejudice and awarding attorney's fees and costs to Jeffrey Robertson. While the battle might not be fully over, to this point it seems no one really won in this case that has lingered in Fort Peck for years. The Drug Task Force and Valley County Sheriff's Office produced a search warrant for two local residents in Glasgow on Friday, July 25. That searched turned up several charges and arrests. Sheriff Glen Meier said he couldn't elaborate on details that led officers to the residence, but he said that the investigation would continue. Valley County government is working to fix a problem regarding financial issues said to be discovered in early June and late May. According to county commission meeting minutes for the month of June, billing issues were discovered and brought to the commissioners' attention. New Valley County Health Department Supervisor Connie Boreson reported that several billings would possibly be rejected due to billings not being sent out for several months. While it’s not a sharp increase from previous years, there has been a noticeable rise in thefts and scams in Valley County and in Glasgow. Gone are the days where you can leave home with the door unlocked, or leave your car unlocked at the grocery store. Lots of cats and dogs were brought to the Valley Event Center on Friday and Saturday last week. They were received by several volunteers who helped prep animals for a short surgery, and comfort them after the work was done. Donations from local businesses have helped give a boost to the Northeast Regional Montana SWAT Team. Deputy Reed Mesman explained that the goal to raise $8,000 for training hasn't been reached yet, but donations have helped. While work continued on the Glasgow Milk River and Cherry Creek System Wide Infrastructure Framework (SWIF) Plan, revisions from the Army Corps of Engineers were returned to the levee safety committee. The Public Service Commission, along with a NorthWestern Engery representative, visited Glasgow a few months ago to discuss the possible purchase of 11 hydroelectric dams from PPL Montana. The $900 million bid to buy the dams would pass on rate increases to 342,000 customers in Montana. Rate increases have been estimated to range from 6 percent to 9 percent. While an investigation continues, information on a local embezzlement case will be postponed.
