The annual Christmas Stroll to celebrate the holiday season arrives in downtown Glasgow at noon this Saturday, Nov. 30, and last until 5 p.m. Those participating in the stroll with local merchants get a chance to win $100 in Chamber Big Bucks. Sunday night went out with a bang for the Valley County Sheriff’s Office. What started as a vehicle doing donuts in a yard turned into a 45-minute high speed chase. Nicholas Davis and Austine Beil, both of Hinsdale, were both arrested on multiple charges. The call came into dispatch around 9:49 p.m. The caller, Tom Sunford of Saco, said a white extended cab Ford Ranger pulled into his yard. One of the hottest topics at the Glasgow City Council meeting had council members and the mayor trying to figure out how to handle higher waters. With flood being a common problem in the Glasgow area, the city council tried to discuss taking action at the meeting on Monday, Nov. 18. A letter of intent that was signed in July 2012 gave the city two years to complete a list of items to keep the levee in conditions that met the Army Corp of Engineers standards. Judges are not the most visible in the community, but their work does make an impact in the community. City Judge Dave Riggin is retiring at the end of this year, and at the last Glasgow City Council meeting the decision was made to fill his position with current City Court Clerk Lynn Gilbert. Gilbert will take the new position on Jan. 1, 2014. She said that this is a unique opportunity that she looks forward to. The outcome of the November election left some tension and a vacancy open at the Glasgow City Council meeting that took place on Monday, Nov. 18. The city council had to seek a new position left vacant by Becky Erickson, who will take the mayor’s seat in January. Nanci Schoenfelder brought her application in to fill the seat at the meeting. A painful but important reminder was placed at Sullivan Park this week. The National Weather Service in Glasgow worked with the Glasgow Reds baseball team to place a high water mark on the concessions stand. Valley County and the city of Glasgow will never forget a flash flood that took everyone by surprise on June 8, 2011. At least half a dozen burglaries have taken place in Valley County and Glasgow over the last few weeks. At Monday’s City Council meeting ,Lt. Trint Gamas said that investigators had one possible suspect in custody – but there may be another. “We just need to remind people to lock their doors on their car doors and their houses,” Gamas said during the council meeting. A third man has been arrested in connection with a recent Valley County drug investigation. Steven Harvey Morlock, 29, of St. Marie, was arrested in Dunn County North Dakota by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 13, according to the Valley County Sheriff's Ofiice. Morlock was arrested on a felony arrest warrant out of Valley County District Court stemming from the same Valley County Sheriff’s Office investigation that led to the arrests of Mark Alan Wagoner and Douglas Michael Turner. Giving thanks is part of the season. Sharing a meal on Thanksgiving day is a tradition for families all across the nation. A memorandum of understanding between Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation allows about 3,700 acres of federal land near Wagner in Phillips County to be specifically designated as being open to the public, FWP announced. The annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Civic Center in Glasgow had an added feature this year. In addition to beautiful music, the VFW honor guard and a thoughtful speech, four World War II veterans who went on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., spoke about their experiences. A state advisory council and the BLM are seeking public input to form a sage grouse habitat conservation plan that will prevent the bird's being listed as an endangered species. The governor-appointed Greater Sage-grouse Habitat Conservation Advisory Council will host seven public meetings to examine a draft sage grouse habitat conservation strategy. In Tuesday’s municipal elections, voters in Glasgow and Nashua decided to change the names at the top. Glasgow Mayor Dan Carney, looking for his third term, lost to Becky Erickson, an 18-year veteran of the Glasgow City Council. The vote was decisive, 724 to 519. Erickson led Carney in all three wards. In Nashua, Mayor Pat Hallett was defeated 81 to 38 by Allan Bunk, who has been Nashua’s mayor before. There were contested races in two of Glasgow’s wards. An ambitious $250,000 plan would transform Flag Pole Park at Fort Peck into a place of honor and remembrance for service men and women as Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial Park. A wind-driven fire burned Brandon and Misty Hendry out of their home on Monday. Glasgow Fire Chief Brandon Brunelle said 20 firemen from the Glasgow and Long Run fire departments answered the call to 1009 2nd Ave. S. at about 10 a.m. Fire was coming out of the attic on the east side of the building when they arrived. The Valley County Airport Commission has considered its options and recommended that the county assume management and services at Glasgow International Airport/Wokal Field with county employees, following the announcement by Choice Aviation that the company will terminate management and fixed base operator (FBO) services on Dec. 22. At its regular meeting on Nov. 4, the Glasgow City Council accepted the resignation of Judge Dave Riggin, effective Jan. 1. Riggin was appointed city judge in April 2007.
