Flights from rural areas that sit at a long distance from major airports can be crucial and important to the local economy. Glasgow will say goodbye to Silver Airways, formally known as Gulfstream Air, and welcome Cape Air – which will provide cheaper flights. Appointments for the Glasgow Levee Safety Committee were finalized at the last city council meeting, and in the same week a local Glasgow rancher was reappointed to the state Private Land Public Wildlife Advisory Council (PLPWAC). Gov. Steve Bullock announced that Jack Billingsley would be appointed to the PLPWAC. His qualifications listed being that he’s a rancher in Valley County. Search and rescue workers have been looking through rugged Idaho terrain for a lost plane just outside of Cascade, Idaho. The plane was carrying two residents of Glasgow and three members of their family. Sheree Chalmers Smith, of Glasgow, and her husband Daniel Smith took off from Baker City, Ore., in the airplane piloted by Daniel Smith’s father, Dale Smith. The young and young at heart lined the streets through downtown Glasgow to watch the brightly lit floats that kicked off the Christmas season on Saturday, Nov. 30. The Glasgow Optimist Club and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture held the annual Parade of Lights. This year there were 14 entries. It's hard to imagine life as it was 100 years ago. The main mode of transportation was still the horse. Running water and electricity in homes was rarely heard of and only a luxury the rich seemed to enjoy. But 100 years ago three residents in the area were just starting out in life. Wooden poles for streetlights and phone lines were a common practice in the years past. Today new poles made of fiberglass and steel stand through the weather and winds and are used more frequently. NorthWestern Energy has begun to replace 74 streetlight poles in Glasgow. Protecting the local community comes with risks and dangers. A grant the city of Glasgow received will help pay for extra protection for law enforcement. The City Council adopted a resolution on Monday, Nov. 18, that allowed them to accept a grant, just more than $700 that will be used to buy new bullet proof vests. Glasgow City Clerk and Treasurer Stacey Amundson explained that the grant wasn’t in the current budget for the year. The annual Christmas Stroll to celebrate the holiday season arrives in downtown Glasgow at noon this Saturday, Nov. 30, and last until 5 p.m. Those participating in the stroll with local merchants get a chance to win $100 in Chamber Big Bucks. Sunday night went out with a bang for the Valley County Sheriff’s Office. What started as a vehicle doing donuts in a yard turned into a 45-minute high speed chase. Nicholas Davis and Austine Beil, both of Hinsdale, were both arrested on multiple charges. One of the hottest topics at the Glasgow City Council meeting had council members and the mayor trying to figure out how to handle higher waters. With flood being a common problem in the Glasgow area, the city council tried to discuss taking action at the meeting on Monday, Nov. 18. A letter of intent that was signed in July 2012 gave the city two years to complete a list of items to keep the levee in conditions that met the Army Corp of Engineers standards. Judges are not the most visible in the community, but their work does make an impact in the community. City Judge Dave Riggin is retiring at the end of this year, and at the last Glasgow City Council meeting the decision was made to fill his position with current City Court Clerk Lynn Gilbert. The outcome of the November election left some tension and a vacancy open at the Glasgow City Council meeting that took place on Monday, Nov. 18. A painful but important reminder was placed at Sullivan Park this week. The National Weather Service in Glasgow worked with the Glasgow Reds baseball team to place a high water mark on the concessions stand. At least half a dozen burglaries have taken place in Valley County and Glasgow over the last few weeks. At Monday’s City Council meeting ,Lt. Trint Gamas said that investigators had one possible suspect in custody – but there may be another. “We just need to remind people to lock their doors on their car doors and their houses,” Gamas said during the council meeting. A third man has been arrested in connection with a recent Valley County drug investigation. Steven Harvey Morlock, 29, of St. Marie, was arrested in Dunn County North Dakota by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 13, according to the Valley County Sheriff's Ofiice. A memorandum of understanding between Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation allows about 3,700 acres of federal land near Wagner in Phillips County to be specifically designated as being open to the public, FWP announced.
