Officials have called off the search for the plane that went missing Dec. 1 in Valley County, Idaho, but families of those on board are continuing with the effort despite fears that Sheree Chalmers Smith of Glasgow, her husband Daniel Smith, and three others lost their lives when the plane crashed. Hinsdale, Saco, and Opheim school superintendents were guest speakers at a presentation Tuesday evening, Dec. 17, at the Nashua school concerning the idea of Nashua switching from a five-day to four-day school week. While bringing sports tournaments to town might be a nuisance to those who end up waiting in line at a restaurant, the positive effects far outweigh standing in line. Glasgow brought the first Class C Showcase to town on Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7. That showcase turned out to be a success and will probably grow next year. A new addition has been welcomed at the Valley County Sheriff's Office in Glasgow. Deputy Christopher Richter began work for the county on Monday, Dec. 16. County commissioners approved his employment at their meeting that took place on Tuesday, Dec. 17. As Richter settles in, he said he’s excited to work for this department and glad to be part of a smaller community. City Court Clerk Lynn Gilbert was sworn in by Mayor Dan Carney at the Glasgow City Council meeting on Monday, Dec. 16, to serve as City Court judge in place of Dave Riggin, who retired. Appointments for the Glasgow Levee Safety Committee were finalized at the last city council meeting, and in the same week a local Glasgow rancher was reappointed to the state Private Land Public Wildlife Advisory Council (PLPWAC). Gov. Steve Bullock announced that Jack Billingsley would be appointed to the PLPWAC. His qualifications listed being that he’s a rancher in Valley County. Search and rescue workers have been looking through rugged Idaho terrain for a lost plane just outside of Cascade, Idaho. The plane was carrying two residents of Glasgow and three members of their family. Sheree Chalmers Smith, of Glasgow, and her husband Daniel Smith took off from Baker City, Ore., in the airplane piloted by Daniel Smith’s father, Dale Smith. The young and young at heart lined the streets through downtown Glasgow to watch the brightly lit floats that kicked off the Christmas season on Saturday, Nov. 30. The Glasgow Optimist Club and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture held the annual Parade of Lights. This year there were 14 entries. Wooden poles for streetlights and phone lines were a common practice in the years past. Today new poles made of fiberglass and steel stand through the weather and winds and are used more frequently. NorthWestern Energy has begun to replace 74 streetlight poles in Glasgow. Protecting the local community comes with risks and dangers. A grant the city of Glasgow received will help pay for extra protection for law enforcement. The City Council adopted a resolution on Monday, Nov. 18, that allowed them to accept a grant, just more than $700 that will be used to buy new bullet proof vests. Glasgow City Clerk and Treasurer Stacey Amundson explained that the grant wasn’t in the current budget for the year. Sunday night went out with a bang for the Valley County Sheriff’s Office. What started as a vehicle doing donuts in a yard turned into a 45-minute high speed chase. Nicholas Davis and Austine Beil, both of Hinsdale, were both arrested on multiple charges. One of the hottest topics at the Glasgow City Council meeting had council members and the mayor trying to figure out how to handle higher waters. With flood being a common problem in the Glasgow area, the city council tried to discuss taking action at the meeting on Monday, Nov. 18. City Judge Dave Riggin is retiring at the end of this year, and at the last Glasgow City Council meeting the decision was made to fill his position with current City Court Clerk Lynn Gilbert.
