Record-breaking weather was set around the area this weekend. An Arctic airmass moved into the area on Dec. 30 and began to lift on Tuesday, Jan. 2. During that time, Glasgow’s high of -19 on New Years Day made it the coldest high ever recorded on that date. The previous coldest high on Jan 1 was -17 in 1928. Valley County Undersheriff Luke Strommen has received the Dan R. Taylor Award. Sheriff Vernon Buerkle told the Courier that Strommen, who has been with the department since 2009, was singled out for the numerous felony investigations he's played a role in, including Operation High Tide, which culminated in 17 felony arrests on drug charges in June, 2011. With increased awareness of the importance of pollinators, bees and beekeeping has become much more mainstream today than 30 years ago. Three workshops – Beginning Beekeeping, In the Bee Yard, and Harvesting and Winterizing, were held on Saturdays in March, May and September, respectively. There are some big changes coming to the Glasgow Clinic in the New Year. Starting Jan. 1, Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Hi-Line General Surgery will merge with the Glasgow Clinic. The new Glasgow Clinic will be composed of two divisions, Primary Care and Specialty Care. Glasgow's Headstart children brought holiday cheer to local senior citizens during the lunch hour at the Senior Citizens' Center on Dec. 21. Children sang songs such as "Twinkle Twinkle" and "Jingle Bells," bringing smiles to all in attendance. Valley County Sheriff's Office reported the recovery of a stolen vehicle the evening of Dec. 23, in Nashua. After noticing the suspicious vehicle on Saturday evening, the Valley County deputy ran the license plate and identified the vehicle as a stolen car out of Plentywood. While the vehicle was parked at a Nashua residence, the deputy surveilled the vehicle until the driver, Angela Sorenson, returned. Nashua's Joel Novak was appointed fire chief of the Nashua Fire Department at the fire hall on Dec. 19. He is heading into his fifth year with the department. The Glasgow Police Department is investigating a combined theft and act of vandalism reported Dec. 16 at Scottie Carwash on Highway 2 in Glasgow. According to the report, the incident occurred sometime between Dec. 15 and 16. The GPD’s Brien Gault told us that two inflatable Minion decorations were stolen by two individuals in a dark-colored vehicle with four doors. The individuals also damaged other seasonal decorations. Junior Katie Kaiser has taken over the reins of Glasgow's Snack-Pack program, which supplies healthy snacks and foods to students in need, specifically on days when children are not in school. The program, established by Morgan Guttenberg in 2016, helps the growing problem of childhood hunger in our area. On Oct. 28, local eighth-grader Kyler Hallock received a distinguished honor when he was presented the first ever Heroism Award at the American Legion's fall conference in Helena. Hallock was recognized for actions taken during the bus crash that occurred on Sept. 19, at the rest stop between Glasgow and Hinsdale.
