The Valley County Sheriff's Office has concluded its search for the body of a Colorado man reported missing in mid-June. A truck owned by Robert J. No remains have been found, but Sheriff Meier told the Courier, "He's there, but we couldn't find him and we've suspended the search." Members of the Tri-County Search & Rescue dog team contributed to the search...

The staff of Planned Pethood Plus came a long way for a good cause. With less than half of their usual team of veterinarians and techs on hand, they performed an enormous number of spay/neuter surgeries during the recent clinic offered at the Valley Event Center. The clinic was held over two days, July 15 and 16, and was coordinated and ran wholly by volunteers. The number of procedures performed this year was down from last year due to the small number of staff who were able to make the trip. As a matter of fact, a number of appointments had... Full story
Rob Kompel of the Glasgow Department of Public Works had some key highlights from the July 5 City Council Meeting. In addition to normal operating agenda items for the city such as decisions on employee stipends and downtown grant applications, the Council addressed sewer and water increases, a new ordinance on cats and dogs, and the Army Corps of Engineers acceptance of the System Wide Improvement Framework (SWIF) Plan for the Levee. The issue of establishing a water and sewer rate increase of two percent a year over the next six years with...

On July 7, the Montana Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Gianforte and running mate Leslie Robinson were at the Busted Knuckle Brewery in downtown Glasgow for a meet and greet with Glasgow residents. The event was scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. and the popular venue was full to capacity. The Courier reached out to Gianforte and Robinson via Aaron Flint, campaign spokesmen, to get some details on just a few of Gianforte's positions. Flint was asked how Gianforte and Robinson plan to help...
There was a heck of a turnout at the official opening ceremony for the Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial Park on July 4. Kelly Siefert from The Buzz, commented that it was the busiest event he'd seen at Fort Peck since the 1970s. As attendees located parking and took their seats, Hailey Stone sang and played piano, followed by members of the GHS band, who performed "The Star Spangled Banner," (dressed to the nines in full regalia). After an invocation from Mr. Jason Myers, Master of...

When I spoke with Glasgow's Sarah Schindler at the Busted Knuckle on June 16, she was well within striking distance of completing her ride across Montana to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Contemplating her goal of crossing the North Dakota state line, she grinned and said, "I'm so close I can taste it." Three weeks later, Schindler says, "I feel like my work is just starting. Suicide prevention starts with us on an every day level, from being kind and understanding people, to...
Angie Frost had worked for Valley View Home (VVH) as the Dietary Manager for over two years when she was unexpectedly let go the week of June 14th. Health Management Services (HMS), the managing agency that operates VVH, told Frost that she was being let go due to her poor performance in the recent Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) inspection. “I’m not exactly sure why I was let go,” explained Frost, “because we did the same things we always do.” Frost blamed a lack of training offered by HMS for the reasons b... Personnel changes again dominated the regularly-scheduled school board meeting held in Nashua on June 21. Following board approval to hire an English teacher (Terri Kaufman) and several classified staff, the trustees also approved student attendance agreements for two students transferring to the Glasgow School District. Affected by the student transfers, the north bus route was revised and all bus routes were approved for the 2016-2017 school year. Toward the end of the meeting, the board voted to accept the resignation of Superintendent...
In the movie Field of Dreams, Ray Kinsella hears a whisper telling him, "If you build it, he will come," while he walks through an Iowa cornfield. In Malta on June 26, the tireless efforts of a group of Malta residents, countless donations of time and money by Phillips County businesses and folks combined with a beautiful donation by a Rock 'N Roll legend turned an empty field into a place of dreams as the city's skatepark officially opened. They built it, and he came. "The turn-out is...
The first time I walked into Leona Knutson's Sweet Memories on Montana Street in Hinsdale, it was half by accident. Noticing a sign for coffee and ice cream on the otherwise sleepy thoroughfare, I swooped in for a pick-me-up, only to be confronted with something like a full-service eatery and two of the nicest people in Northeast Montana. I say something like full service because Leona and husband Lonnie (Swede) have a limited, rotating food menu: Just one breakfast dish per day and a short...
In response to mounting challenges in resident care at Glasgow’s Valley View Home, Health Management Services, the management company hired to run the facility in 2014, has fired at least one long-term employee in recent days. With as many as three local individuals falling victim to what HMS’s Karly Kruckenberg described as “personnel changes,” questions abound regarding VVH’s staffing capacity and HMS’s longterm plans for the much-loved local institution. Following a troubling quality assurance review by state inspectors (see “Valley Vie...
