    Students at the middle and high school in Glasgow are gearing up to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use as part of Kick Butts Day on Wednesday, March 21. Kick Butts Day is an annual day of youth activism and leadership against tobacco use, sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Thousands of events are taking place across the country to stand up to corporate tobacco companies, which target youth as “replacement smokers” as their current customers quit or die.   • Valley View Home Hires New Administrator

    Valley View Nursing Home hired Navy Veteran Frank "Wes" Thompson to take over as the permanent administrator for the home. Thompson will be the first permanent administrator to fill the role at Valley View since the dismissal of Health Management Services in early 2017. Prior to the hiring of Thompson, the position was held by interim administrators Judy Melin and Kent Hanawalt. Thompson, a native of Texas, joined the Navy out of High School as a Corpsman, or medic.     School closures are few and far between in Northeast Montana, even with the severe weather that is typical for the region. Following the recent weather event that was reported on in the Courier (It’s Snow Joke, March 7), one of the most asked questions was, “When was the last time schools closed in Glasgow?” While school administrators were unable to answer the question, a few Courier readers pointed us in the right direction.     As of Monday, March 12, the window to file for open Valley County positions has officially closed. Final additions to the unusually long list of names includes Joe Horn for sheriff, Christine Gamas for justice of the peace, and Darwin L. Johnson has filed for a committeeman position for the Valley County Republicans, Precinct 34.   • State House Reps Decided by Default

    Following the March 12 deadline to file as a candidate in Montana’s November election for House District 33, which covers Malta to Glasgow, and 34, which covers Glasgow north to Scobey and around to Cubertson, were decided by default as the candidates ran uncontested for the election.   • NWS Reminder on Ice Jam Season

    Temperatures will be warming up in the Upper Yellowstone and Upper Musselshell River basins with readings in the fifties to lower sixties by mid-week. That will allow tributaries to start sending water and ice into the main stem rivers. Generally, it takes about five to ten days to evacuate ice out from the Billings area all the way through the Lower Yellowstone River.     Three days ago, the National Weather Service in Glasgow began warning northeast Montana residents: expect a winter storm that will bring heavy and blowing snow. In the days following, the warning was updated and enhanced multiple times, but the NWS never wavered when predicting the severity of the event.     Valley County District Court has issued felony warrants for Hunter Vegge, Cassandra Washington and George Beckett on a range of charges, including possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute, possession of dangerous drugs, and various additional charges and misdemeanors. Sheriff Vernon Buerkle told the Courier that there were no serious injuries or wrecks at press time on Valley County roads during the recent weather event.     The last week for law enforcement was uneventful according to accounts coming from the Valley County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Vernon Buerkle reported that a vehicle roll-over occurred outside Hinsdale on Sunday afternoon at around 2:31 pm. According to Sheriff Buerkle an off-duty Highway Patrol trooper and retired Valley County sheriff were traveling on U.S. Highway 2 east of Hinsdale when they saw the vehicle in the ditch.   • Witkowski Gets 40 More Years

    Jay Witkowski was sentenced to 40 years in the Montana State Prison for his role in an attempted escape from the Valley County Detention Center on Feb. 20, 2017. Witkowski pleaded guilty to felony aggravated kidnapping as part of a plea deal arrangement. Witkowski was on trial for murder at the time of his attempted escape involving one other inmate at the jail.     Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Hunter Education course dates have been set for many areas across Region 6. All hunter education classes are free of charge.   • Kelly Found Liable for Fraud

    In a Feb. 5 decision in Valley County District Court, Judge Yvonne Laird ordered Patrick Kelly, formerly of St Marie and President of the Saint Marie Development Corporation (SMDC), to pay to New St. Marie, LLC, owner Michael Mitchell a total of $12,518,734.60 for damages, interests and payments made for being found liable of fraud and breach of contract. Kelly had countersued Mitchell, but the Judge denied each of Kelly’s claims.     The Valley County Commissioners approved Hinsdale’s Crystal Alvarado as the new director of Valley County Public Health. She replaces Connie Boreson. The commissioners also took bids on area projects at a Feb. 20 public meeting. These include bids for equipment for the road department, specifically eight motor graders.
