  • Special Advocates Needed in Glasgow, Valley County

    Right now in Valley County, there are 35 victims of child neglect and abuse waiting for a court appointed special advocate (CASA) to be assigned to their ongoing case. This total does not include the cases which have already been assigned advocates. There are currently only four CASA volunteers for all of Valley County. These same volunteers serviced over 45 cases of child neglect and abuse last year alone, according to Executive Director of CASA of Hill County, Inc., Mark Douglass, Douglass oversees and handles CASA volunteers and cases in... Full story

  • School Board Discusses Substitute Teacher Pay Program

    The Glasgow school board met in regular session on Oct. 12. The meeting was held at the Irle School following a meal for the trustees. Benji Phillips began the meeting with a student report and discussed projects and events that FCCLA, Honor Society, G-Club and Key Club are all working on or have participated in recently. Phillips also reminded those present that the State Student Council Convention is set to be held in Glasgow at the end of October and housing is needed for attendees.   • Mill Levy Pays for Repairs at GCCL

    As drivers and library regulars in Glasgow will have noticed, there has been ongoing construction around the Glasgow City-County Library recently. Library Director Megan Haddix told the Courier that the construction project was funded by mill levy monies earmarked for improvements and repairs at the facility.     Leroy Kountz is one of three candidates for the position of county commissioner in Valley County. Kountz joined the Montana National Guard at the age of 17, and graduated from Glasgow High School in 1980. After graduation, he attended mechanic school in Fort Knox, Ky, as part of his national guard service. Kountz received an honorable discharge from the Guard in 1985.     The recent weather events here in Valley County and beyond are taking both front and center stage. Starting Oct. 1, localized flooding due to rainfall has been reported in several areas. According to NWS’ Tanja Franzen, the flood predictions are not as dire as they were on Oct. 7. Beaver Creek is mostly fueling this flood, which is a good thing for Glasgow.     With support from the Northeastern Arts Network (NAN), John Roberts Y Pan Blanco brought the heat to Glasgow High School on Oct. 4.     Recent flooding throughout Valley and Phillips counties have had impacts on low lying areas, drowning out hay bales and alfalfa seed as well as covering roads.   • Blake Receives Suspended Sentence for Sex Crime

    A Glasgow man was sentenced in Valley County District Court on Oct. 4 for one count of felony incest. With a handful of supporters seated behind him in the courtroom, Martin Blake, 40, appeared before Judge John C. McKeon. Following two hours of testimony and arguments, Judge McKeon sentenced Blake to 30 years in the Montana prison system, with all 30 years suspended.     On Aug. 20, 18 Boy Scouts and Scout supporters came out to assist Troop 861 Life Scout Garret Paju with his Eagle Scout Project at Boy Scout Park. The project consisted of stripping the current asphalt roof from the park's shower house, patching holes in the roof and placing a new steel roof on the structure along with other maintenance around the park.     Senator Steve Daines made a stop in Glasgow while on his tour of eastern Montana. Glasgow marked the Senator’s second stop on a 650 mile long tour that will undertake in three days. During the public comment period, after a brief introduction from GMS Principal Mike Zoanni, Bryon Gustafson spoke to the trustees.
