Valley View's own Robert "Bob" Schumacher is turning 100 years old on Aug. 2. He was born in 1917 in Wisconsin, and has seen many things throughout his life. His time in Wisconsin taught him a love of fishing, especially for catfish. He loves to share stories of his many fishing trips and the various fish he has caught. The campaign “Vote Yes Valley View” has made headway in their efforts to pass a special hospital tax district for Valley View Home. As of press time, the organization has held six informational meetings in Opheim, Nashua, Fort Peck, Hinsdale, Frazer and at Valley View Home, with meetings still to come in St. Marie, Glasgow (during the NE Montana Fair) and Lustre. Glasgow Police Department and the Valley County Sheriff’s Office will join forces again this year during the Northeast Montana Fair. The combined efforts of these two agencies will be to saturate the area in hopes of deterring underage drinking by limiting the opportunity and the acceptance during the fair’s activities. Throughout the summer, the Fort Peck Interpretive Center has been hosting activities each weekend to keep visitors entertained and to keep children learning. Various activities have included learning about various types of clouds, how to read a map, the differences between frogs and toads as well as creating masterpieces to bring home. The Lodgepole Complex fire continues to devour range land, homes, and farms in Garfield and Petroleum Counties, approximately 52 miles northeast of Jordan. At press time, the fires had consumed more than 250,000 acres and 16 homes across four different close burning fires, dubbed the Bridge Coulee, Barker, South Breaks and Square Butte fires, which make up the Lodgepole Complex fires. Local artist Cathryn Reitler began an Artist in Residency program in the historic town of Medora, N.D., on July 19. As a part of the program, Reitler is living expense-free in one of the town's 18th century antique homes, where she is able to paint onsite and has a gallery of her works for sale upstairs. With the Northeast Montana Fair only two and a half weeks away, Valley County 4-H members are busy preparing their projects that they will be entering. Some are busy with their market animals, while others are busy baking. For some other members, they are working on their sewing projects. The members that are entering their sewing projects took in the Sewing Camp held June 20 at the Opheim High School. The United States Attorney's Office announced that Toni Louise Plummer-Alvernaz was sentenced to one year in prison, $246,024 in restitution and a $100 special assessment for her involvement in a long running embezzlement scheme involving two northeast Montana charities. The sentencing occurred on July 14, before U.S. District Chief Judge Dana Christensen in Great Falls. After recently announcing they will be accepting bids for a project that will span 1.8 miles of Airport Road, Valley County Commissioners have accepted the offer made by sole bidder Century Paving of Lewistown. The company’s bid of $774,477 will cover leveling and a 2-inch overlay running a 1.8 mile span of Airport Road, spanning from Ezzie’s Westend to the junction next to the high school. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated Valley County as a primary natural disaster due to losses and damages caused by the recent drought. Many Montana counties, including Valley County, have met the extreme drought (D3) criteria on the U.S. Drought Monitor, making farmers and ranchers in these areas eligible for a number of disaster assistance programs. On July 6, law enforcement responded to a two vehicle accident outside of Glasgow that resulted in a fatality. Valley County Sheriffs discovered a head-on collision near mile marker 546, roughly three miles east of Glasgow. Emergency medical services also responded to the scene and both occupants were transported to Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital. Local business owner, Lee Nelson, suffered a heart attack on July 5, and after being flighted to Billings, he suffered several other heart attacks, which required him to be flighted to Salt Lake City, Utah, on July 7. Since being admitted in Utah, he has various forms of life support hooked up to his heart and has been making good improvements. He is getting stronger with each day that passes. Change is in the air at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital with extensive renovations and space repurposing on the horizon, and that spirit of change doesn’t stop at the building.
