Joe Tihlarik was one of 53 new officers who graduated from the Montana Law Enforcement Academy in Helena on Dec. 11. He returns to the Valley County Sheriff's Department as a deputy. Jordan Keys, 19, of Fort Peck, was charged with violations involving hunting from a public highway, unlawful possession and transportation of a game animal, and using a rifle in a weapons-restriction area. Glasgow's excellent welcome sign at the west end of town on Hwy 2 went up in lights on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Thanks to the Glasgow Tourism Business Improvement District and far too many members of the Glasgow community to name here, the rock/sign's twin will be installed at the east end of town over the winter. Since 2011, Phillips and Valley County ranchers have participated in the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Sage Grouse Initiative (SGI). They have implemented actions both individually and together as a community to improve sage grouse habitat. Scam telephone calls are typical this time of year. Callers purporting to be from Dish Network or the IRS have been reported to the Sheriff’s Department recently. While these calls are becoming a fact of life, law enforcement at all levels, local to federal, lack the resources to track down all of the criminals. Opheim - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to replace the bridge over the Middle Fork of Porcupine Creek on Montana Highway 24 about 11 miles south of Opheim at reference post 39.3. The project is expected to extend approximately a quarter mile from each end of the bridge replacement. In November, the Judicial Nomination Commission began accepting applications for the position of district court judge for the 16th Judicial District to fill the seat to be vacated by Judge George Huss, effective Jan. 1, 2016. The 41st Annual Fort Peck Christmas Bird Count will be held this year on Saturday, Dec. 19. In the last 40 years we have found a total of 130 species within the Ft. Peck CBC circle, including Bald Eagle, Mallard, Common Goldeneye and Black-capped Chickadee, which have been seen in every one of the counts. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has named Mark Sullivan as the new Regional Supervisor for Region 6. He is replacing Tom Flowers. The Fort Peck resident holds a master's degree in wildlife management from Montana State University. His previous roles with FWP include work as a wildlife management biologist in Malta and block management coordinator for Region 4. Two weekends ago Glasgow Speech and Drama attended the 2nd annual Eastern Montana Kickoff Speech and Drama Meet at West High School in Billings. It is a massive meet with over 500 - all class competitors from all over eastern Montana. It served as a great motivator to get our participants fired up and going for the season.
