Construction will soon begin on a new bridge just west of Hinsdale. Due to begin on Aug. 28, the project will replace the bridge over Beaver Creek on Milk River Road. The contract will be carried out by Tamietti Construction of Great Falls. The bulk of the project will be completed by Nov. 26, and the crew will have the bridge finished sometime in December. To start off the new school year on the right foot for all students, Irle School recently obtained buddy benches to help promote friendship and a sense of community outside of the classroom. If a student feels lonely, they may sit on the bench and wait for another student to invite them to play, go for a walk or just to have a conversation. Jury selection for the Jay Witkowski murder trial has begun. 109 jurors have been summoned in the case. Witkowski is charged with the New Year’s Eve murder of Evelyn Garcia. Officials stressed that jury selection in the case will be overly crowded, and discretion should be used in deciding whether to attend the court proceedings over the next couple of days. Bower, both of Glasgow, and Eugene Joseph “Gene” Martin were announced as inductees to the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame & Western Heritage Center (MCHF & WHC) on Aug. 11. Foster children along Montana’s Hi-Line will be receiving toys donated by the Toy Industry Foundation (TIF) and distributed by National Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Association, according to a press release from the latter organization. Local CASA volunteers will distribute gifts suitable for a variety of ages from a donation pool of more than 500 toys. The weather on the lake this past weekend, Aug. 12-13, provided sailors with a wide variety of conditions to compete in. At its most challenging, they battled 4-foot rolling waves as they attempted to harness winds that gusted to 30 miles per hour on Saturday. The strong wind and waves were difficult to handle for smaller vessels and at one point a competitor in a Laser capsized. Area students, Ashlyn Aten and Kassandra Moore, were two of 16 Montana high school juniors and seniors who participated in the Miles City MedStart Camp from July 16-20 in Miles City. MedStart Summer Camp is a five-day summer camp program sponsored by the Montana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) system. The Valley County Sheriff’s Office reported that they had a rather uneventful four days at the Northeast Montana Fair. Sheriff Verne Buerkle told the Courier, “We were really glad to see the large crowds at the fair, and we had no major problems.” The Sheriff did say that a few “disturbances,” mostly fights, occurred and that there were a few missing children, but everything turned out in the end. Bright and colorful, Grease bounced along like a freshly inflated vintage beach ball. Fun to watch, but for the most part, nothing to bring one to the edge of their seat. The Fort Peck Sailing Club will be hosting their annual Can-Am Regatta this weekend, Aug. 11 – Aug. 13. The events will kick off Friday at 2 p.m., with a sailing seminar on the lake. Last week Valley County Commissioners met with people from the Keystone Pipeline and discussed new developments on the project and updates on their plan for the area. Some of the plans include improvements being made to three county roads that the company plans to use regularly in Valley County. These roads include Burns Road, Britsch Road and Bear Creek Road. The third annual Paint Run/Walk will be on Saturday, Aug. 19, in Glasgow. The run/walk is a 2.5 mile untimed event highlighted by participants being sprayed with powdered paint at various points along the course. The Glasgow Fire Department responded to a fire at the La Casa Hotel on Friday. When they arrived they discovered that someone had started a gas can on fire and luckily the flames were nearly out. The small blaze caused some damage to the building, burning the window casing on one of the rooms. The suspect, Melvin Thompson, had fled the scene on foot heading east, and was apprehended by the Glasgow Police Department near the Holiday. Valley View's own Robert "Bob" Schumacher is turning 100 years old on Aug. 2. He was born in 1917 in Wisconsin, and has seen many things throughout his life.
