Following the March 12 deadline to file as a candidate in Montana’s November election for House District 33, which covers Malta to Glasgow, and 34, which covers Glasgow north to Scobey and around to Cubertson, were decided by default as the candidates ran uncontested for the election. Temperatures will be warming up in the Upper Yellowstone and Upper Musselshell River basins with readings in the fifties to lower sixties by mid-week. That will allow tributaries to start sending water and ice into the main stem rivers. Generally, it takes about five to ten days to evacuate ice out from the Billings area all the way through the Lower Yellowstone River. Three days ago, the National Weather Service in Glasgow began warning northeast Montana residents: expect a winter storm that will bring heavy and blowing snow. In the days following, the warning was updated and enhanced multiple times, but the NWS never wavered when predicting the severity of the event. Valley County District Court has issued felony warrants for Hunter Vegge, Cassandra Washington and George Beckett on a range of charges, including possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute, possession of dangerous drugs, and various additional charges and misdemeanors. Sheriff Vernon Buerkle told the Courier that there were no serious injuries or wrecks at press time on Valley County roads during the recent weather event. The Fort Peck Senior Citizens are sponsoring the fun walk/run across the face of Fort Peck Dam on March 17, 2018. It is called “SLAM THE DAM 4: Run with the Wind”. This is a non-competitive walk/run, and no times will be kept. On the morning of March 17, the committee members will decide which direction the walk/run will go based entirely on the direction the wind is blowing that day. Erika Bengochea was recently appointed as the President of the Valley View Home Foundation Board following the expired term of Ken Jansa of Valley Bank. The last week for law enforcement was uneventful according to accounts coming from the Valley County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Vernon Buerkle reported that a vehicle roll-over occurred outside Hinsdale on Sunday afternoon at around 2:31 pm. According to Sheriff Buerkle an off-duty Highway Patrol trooper and retired Valley County sheriff were traveling on U.S. Highway 2 east of Hinsdale when they saw the vehicle in the ditch. New Glasgow High School art teacher Bridget Schmidt has partnered with the Sean R. Heavey Gallery to feature artwork by seniors Ashtyn Myrick and Taylor Trathen. A reception is planned at the gallery on March 2 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Myrick is a 19 year old senior at GHS participating in multiple sports as well as visual arts. Jay Witkowski was sentenced to 40 years in the Montana State Prison for his role in an attempted escape from the Valley County Detention Center on Feb. 20, 2017. Witkowski pleaded guilty to felony aggravated kidnapping as part of a plea deal arrangement. Witkowski was on trial for murder at the time of his attempted escape involving one other inmate at the jail. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Hunter Education course dates have been set for many areas across Region 6. All hunter education classes are free of charge. Many classes are being held prior to the March 15 application deadline for special permits for deer and elk. Future application deadlines include May 1 for moose, sheep and goat, and June 1 for deer B, elk B and antelope. In a Feb. 5 decision in Valley County District Court, Judge Yvonne Laird ordered Patrick Kelly, formerly of St Marie and President of the Saint Marie Development Corporation (SMDC), to pay to New St. Marie, LLC, owner Michael Mitchell a total of $12,518,734.60 for damages, interests and payments made for being found liable of fraud and breach of contract. The Valley County Commissioners approved Hinsdale’s Crystal Alvarado as the new director of Valley County Public Health. She replaces Connie Boreson. The commissioners also took bids on area projects at a Feb. 20 public meeting. These include bids for equipment for the road department, specifically eight motor graders. Valley County Sheriff Vernon Buerkle confirms the arrest of Robert Micheal Grimm in Nashua on Feb. 17. Grimm has been charged with assault on a partner or family member, and destruction of a communication device used to obstruct, prevent, or interfere with the reporting of a criminal offense. Sheriff Buerkle also confirms the hiring of two new deputies. The names of the new hires will be released in coming weeks, following official notifications. The Missouri/Milk River Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be hosting its 32nd Annual Fundraising banquet in support of Ducks Unlimited’s 81st birthday on March 10 at the Cottonwood Inn. The Montana Highway Patrol arrested Duy Thanh Nguyen, of Portland, Ore, on multiple charges on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation Feb. 15. The arrest was made with the assistance of the Tri-Agency Drug Task Force. Charges are pending at press time, but include driving while suspended, driving under the influence of alcohol, and criminal possession of dangerous drugs. Otto Osen is the Wheatgrass Arts & Gallery Artist of the Month for March. He describes his work as made up mainly of nonrepresentational or abstract drawing and paintings. The shy artist didn't go on much when prompted at press time, but did mention that most of the works on display will be from a recent period of time spent living in Missoula.
