The Glasgow City-County Library hosted their first story time of the month at Valley View Home on Feb. 1. Residents and children alike had a great time interacting with one another through songs and dances, led by children's librarian Karen Anderson, and listened to two stories by librarian Trish Collins that had a balloon theme. The impression I want to relay about candidate for Valley County Clerk and Recorder Ruth Dowell is one of competency and attention to detail. Weekly, I find myself speaking to our sitting county commissioners about county business and meeting agendas, always with Dowell present in her current role as the commissioners' administrative assistant. Valley County Montana State University (MSU) Extension agent Shelly Mills was awarded the Anne Wiprud Memorial Award during the MSU annual conference in Bozeman, Oct. 23-27. The Anne Wiprud Memorial Award recognizes a MSU Extension professional with fewer than 10 years of experience for their outstanding achievement. Missouri River Country Tourism Region of Fort Peck received grant funds in the amount of $28,000 from Governor Bullock on Jan. 19, through the Tourism Grant Program at the Department of Commerce, Office of Tourism and Business Development. Missouri River Country is Montana’s northeastern tourism region, covering Garfield, McCone, Phillips, Valley, Sheridan, Daniels, Richland and Roosevelt counties as well as the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. Members of the law enforcement community in Glasgow attended a suicide prevention training course on Jan. 29. Valley County Undersheriff (and current candidate for sheriff) Luke Strommen was among the attendees. According to Sheriff Vernon Buerkle, alcohol compliance checks are planned at area businesses in coming weeks and months. Reynolds Market in Glasgow recently awarded its first Friends of Reynolds (FOR) donations to participating non-profit groups since the program’s inception last fall. The 20th Annual Ice Fishing Derby, hosted by the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture, will be held Saturday, Feb. 10. Registration will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with fishing starting at noon and ending at 3 p.m. The event will be held at the fishing access site at the Dredge Cuts Trout Pond on Highway 117. The 3rd Annual Skip Erickson Wildlife Safari scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 27, has been canceled and will be rescheduled for late September. According to Haylie Shipp, the event is being reorganized, and more time is needed to finalize event details. Jay Witkowski faces a sentencing hearing related to his recent plea of guilty on an aggravated kidnapping charge. Tim Newton recently made a gift of $10,000 to the FMDH Foundation in memory of his wife, Karen Newton. February's Wheatgrass Gallery Artist of the Month, Mary Kate Teske, has been quietly infiltrating the pages of the Courier with her photographs for over a year. Joe Hall, 27, of Kila, Mont., was arrested for felony burglary and theft in a joint effort by the Valley County Sheriff’s Office and the Glasgow Police Department. The arrest took place on Jan. 14 in the Shopko parking lot. At press time, Hall remains in custody at the Valley County Detention Center. Jay Witkowski completed a change of plea hearing on Jan. 16. He appeared before Judge Yvonne Laird in Valley County District Court. According to Valley County Attorney Dylan Jensen, Witkowski plead guilty to the offense of aggravated kidnapping. He then was placed under oath and then provided the court with a factual basis to support his plea. “Witkowski acknowledged he and another inmate kidnapped a Valley County Detention Officer by using force,” Jensen told the Courier, “after which they took her keys to make an unsuccessful escape attem...
