Valley County students have returned back to the classroom over the past two weeks. Opheim Schools and Lustre Christian started back into the classroom on Aug. 19, Glasgow and Hinsdale started back on Aug. 26 while Nashua students returned on Aug. 27. The Montana Highway Patrol reported that Daniel Rogenes was killed when he rolled his vehicle while traveling on Highway 24 South just outside Glasgow in the early morning hours on Aug. 30. The vehicle was discovered at 7:30 a.m. According to the investigating trooper David Moon, Rogenes was traveling south near mile marker 72 between Glasgow and Fort Peck in a 1999 Ford Ranger. Lightning set off a wildfire on Bureau of Land Management land west of the Pines Recreation area on Fort Peck Lake the night of Aug 20 or early morning on Aug. 21, according to Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Fire Manager Don Pyrah. At their regularly-scheduled meeting on Aug. 19, the Valley County Commissioners voted unanimously to move to a mail ballot election, with the option of in-person voting, for the 2020 general election. Ballots will be mailed out for the Tuesday, Nov. 3, election on Oct. 9. Voters may vote in person at the county election office (in the Valley County Courthouse) 30 days prior to the election. The Montana Highway Patrol has told the Courier that a train struck a pick up truck at the Montfort Rd crossing south of Vandalia at about 9:10 the morning of Aug. 27. The truck was carrying only the driver, who suffered minor injuries, according to the investigating trooper, David Moon. According to Moon, the driver was traveling northbound on Montfort Rd and failed to yield for the train.
