During their regular session held on Dec. 7, Valley County Commissioners met with Mayor Becky Erickson and Director of Public Works Robert Kompel. The county commissioners passed a motion to accept a request from Sheriff Glen Meier to retire from his position on Dec. 31, leaving behind a legacy that Commissioner Dave Reinhardt recalled as being unique. According to Reinhardt, there were high levels of cooperation between all departments during Meier's tenure which resulted in the good of the...
Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier formally announced his retirement to the Valley County Commissioners on Dec. 5. He will vacate the position at the end of 2016. Meier is in the middle of a fourth consecutive term as Valley County's Sheriff. He was first elected to the position in 2002 and won re-election most recently in 2014. His term is set to end in 2018. In a letter addressed to the commissioners, Meier explains, "It is just time for me to start the rest of my life." Pressed further, Meier...

Valley County is a large county, over 3 million acres with nearly half of that being BLM, CMR, Corps of Engineers, and State of Montana lands. The policies and plans of these agencies can have either positive or negative effects on our economy and our future. Last week I attended the “Coordination” training held at the Malta library. “Coordination” refers to the requirement that Federal agencies coordinate with local governments in developing and implementing plans and management activities. The training was primarily attended by County...
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with John Fahlgren, one of three candidates for Valley County Commissioner, to talk about his experiences, and to provide his opinion on certain key issues facing the county. Fahlgren held a position with The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) which provided him the opportunity to collaborate with past county commissioners quite regularly. Fahlgren stated: “In my experience with BLM I had worked with the commissioners here in Glasgow, and it has always been an interesting position. The way the c...
The city pool in Glasgow was built where it stands, or slouches now, 43 years ago. It was opened in June of 1974. It was expected to last around 10 years. Like many other things in Glasgow, it has long outlasted its expiration date. It is now in dilapidated, unsafe condition, and is something that the city of Glasgow as a whole and its residents should be embarrassed about. Why haven’t we built a new pool? Why are we putting pool-goers at risk of injury? What is the solution? Glasgow’s pool is the home to many different activities, even in its...
After longtime Valley County Attorney Nick Murnion left his position to become Montana's 16th Judicial District Judge, the position has now been filled. Dylan Jensen, deputy attorney for Valley County, was appointed with a 3-0 vote by the county commissioners. Casey Moore, a public defender for Montana, was the other applicant interviewed. Jensen is a graduate of Hinsdale High School and University of Montana's Alexander Blewett III School of Law....

My first draft of this week’s column went off into cyber space never to return. While reaching for my coffee, I accidentally hit ctrl and something else and off it went, hurtling at 1.6 million miles per hour through the universe. I tried hitting that little circular blue arrow, but ... no go ... then I tried the search thingie, but my search came up as empty as OJ’s search for the “real killers.” I had already saved it, but that window that says something like “you have made changes to the text, do you want to save the changes before cl...
The March 7 Glasgow City Council meeting saw discussion of employee longevity pay, approval of a vacation extension for Joe Horn (GPD), updates on the proposed Valley Court Apartment acquisition, renovations on the T-33 airplane at the Pioneer Museum, committee and department head reports and other council business. A council tour of the Glasgow Fire Department was tentatively scheduled for March 21 following the regular council meeting. At the March 9 meeting of the Valley County Commissioners, outgoing Valley County Attorney Nick Murnion’s r...

Despite the recent rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline by President Obama in anticipation of December’s COP 21 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, many residents in Valley County rue the project’s demise. “It’s a poor decision,” said Dave Pippin, former County Commissioner and current resident of Glasgow. “I see it as large-scale political payback. It’s bad for the county, bad for our economy, and I think bad for the United States.” As the project floundered amid federal non-committal, jobs related to its progression evaporated in Big Sky...
The projected annual tax influx is $12 million. The two, year-long construction camps would bestow short-term economic tidings on the county, buoying regional business and padding the local government’s coffers. The fiscal boon of the pipeline is incontrovertible to some, and a moot point to other, environmentally-bent parties. In absence of firm federal approval or an unceremonious nixing, the XL bill —along with all the variant, polarized opinions it procures from an anxious populace — dangles high above the heads of congressmen and cattle he...
The Board of Valley County Commissioners approved the granting of $60,000 towards the repair of Skylark Road at its Sept. 16 meeting. The motion passed unanimously — though Committee Chairman Bruce Peterson expressed concern as to the source of the funding before casting his vote. “We should request a $5,000 loan from the golf committee,” he joked. “So long as you don’t schedule the repairs during the playoffs, that should be fine,” replied KLTZ’s Stan Ozark, grinning. In times of tightened purse strings, some find solace in keeping thing...
Valley County Commissioners have released plans to address road conditions on the 1.6 mile stretch of Skylark Road from Hwy 2 to the Sunnyside Golf and Country Club. At a hearing held at the Valley County Courthouse on May 11, 2009, a consensus was reached among members of the public amounting to an expressed wish that the county halt any major road resurfacing that would include the removal or reclamation of paved sections of the road. Six years later, commissioners have resolved to proceed with plans to replaced the badly-damaged asphalt...
There was a packed house at the June 17 meeting of the county commissioners. Members of the Valley County Fair Board and individuals from the public spoke for and against a recommendation to the commission that Glasgow resident Gene Hartsock be removed from the board for a list of reasons relating to alleged use of foul language, threatening behavior, and other largely unsubstantiated accusations. All attendees who spoke on the subject allowed that Hartsock has done excellent work for the county and other peripherally related civic...
The Valley County Refuse District #1 is made up of eight citizens, representing two from Glasgow, one from Opheim, one from Nashua, one from Fort Peck, one from Hinsdale, one from Lustre and one county commissioner. Meetings are the third Tuesday of every month, at the Valley County Courthouse in the community room. They start at 5 p.m. and are open to the public. The 2015 board members of the Valley County Refuse Board are Dan Carney (chairman), Dan Durell (Glasgow representative), Glen Guenther (vice chairman and Fort Peck representative),...
After a lot of work on a bill that passed both through the Montana Senate and House, Sen. John Brenden-R was disappointed yesterday as his bill SB 284 was vetoed. The bill would allow county commissioners to approve the relocation of wild bison and allow them to ask for conditions if they saw a need. The bill passed in the the house and senate by the end of March with some amendments. It went up for the vote again in April and passed both the house (59-40) and senate (32-18). The governor made...
