Following a recent market appraisal of $50,000, the Valley County Commissioners have decided to hold a public auction of the Magruder property (also known as the farmer’s market) on Oct. 25 at 9:30 a.m. at the Valley County Courthouse. The property comprises three lots along the south side of Highway 42 heading towards Fort Peck inside the Glasgow city limits. Recent concrete walkway renovations have improved use and have facilitated the seasonal farmers market held there on Saturdays. Sources indicate that the farmer’s market may be moved to...
As a result of cooler and wetter conditions, fire restrictions are no longer in stage one in Valley County. Commissioners stated that changes reducing fire restrictions have also taken place across several of the other surrounding counties as well. Officials from the Treasure State Endowment Program (TSEP) paid a visit to the County recently. The visit was made to observe progress made to the construction of a bridge west of Hinsdale over Beaver Creek that helped to fund. City Court has also moved into its new location at the Valley County...
Most people agree. The Endangered Species Act (Act or ESA) is broken. The concerns and issues originally addressed by the Act were real and its goals were very popular. The intent of the Act was valid but problems have arisen with the implementation. Unfortunately, the Act did not differentiate between federal and state-owned and/or managed lands and vested private property. This omission has given state and federal agencies considerable power to regulate actions and land uses on private lands. They have used this power, goaded on by...

Valley County Commissioners decided last week to have the Magruder property appraised and to possibly auction off the property. The long time home for the farmer’s market was acquired by the county as tax deed land. The county had offered the land to the city, which declined to take it for unspecified reasons. The farmer’s market will still continue after the property is sold at auction and will take place at the fairgrounds, who is eager to accommodate them. City Court will be relocating to a new location in the basement of the courthouse ann...
With several projects across the county currently in progress, drivers are being urged to keep an eye out and obey traffic signs. Crews have reported several instances where vehicles have drove past barriers and signs indicating road closures. Neglecting to follow construction signs can put workers at risk for injury, job site delays, result in traffic citations and could cause damage to your vehicle. Valley County Commissioners announced that they have approved the paving of a small stretch of...

My 39 years of medical practice has given me unique insights into Valley View Nursing Home. This facility has provided excellent care and support for countless residents and has directly or indirectly touched the lives of nearly all who live in Valley County. The nursing home is in a crisis, not one of its own doing, but because of our state legislature choosing to chronically underfund reimbursement for nursing home care. Approximately 70 percent of the current residents rely on Medicaid to cover their costs. That reimbursement amounts to a...
Last week Valley County Commissioners met with people from the Keystone Pipeline and discussed new developments on the project and updates on their plan for the area. Commissioners stated that the keystone officials stated there are plans to put man camps near Hinsdale located off of Burns Road and another one located 2 or 3 miles north of Park Grove,...

After consulting with Great West Engineering Firm, whom designed the plan, the commissioners approved the bid of $717,131.25 made by Tamietti Construction. The county will perform the dirt and road work as w...
Last week during their weekly Discussion and Decision Meeting, the Valley County Commissioners had quite a few things on their agenda. The first item of the meeting concerned county employees purchasing tax liens. During the discussion, Commissioner Bruce Peterson expressed his concerns on the matter, stating that county employees would have inside knowledge and would have the edge on these properties with tax liens on them. The motion passed two to one, allowing county employees to purchase tax liens after they had been made available to the...

Valley County Commissioners would like it to be known that the Milk River Bridge south of Nashua will be getting the deck replaced this summer. Early indications show that the project should take 10 weeks and traffic will be limited to a single lane. During the construction, commissioners warn that the bridge may cause problems with transporting heavy machinery. They also expect that delays of 10 to 15 minutes may occur while the maintenance takes place. The site will have stop lights and flaggers present to assist in directing traffic....
On March 22, Valley County Commissioners agreed upon the hiring of Zach Lypszyc as Assistant County Attorney. Lypszyc has interned with the Valley County Attorney for the last two years. He will graduate this summer and is expected to pass the bar before taking the position in September. The commissioners are in opposition to granting the American Prairie Reserve’s (APR) requested change to their grazing permit. The APR seeks to change their BLM grazing permit to allow year-round grazing and other controversial changes to local land use p...
With the recent appointment of Ryan Zinke as Secretary of the Interior, commissioners continue to prepare for the upcoming special election. The election will fill the seat left vacant by Zinke in Congress and will take place on May 25. How this special election will be conducted is still up in the wind, with Montana legislators currently considering a bill, SB-305, that would allow counties to conduct the special election strictly by mail-in ballot, if they choose too. The Montana Association of Counties recommended that the commissioners...

The county currently has 2,401 animal unit months (AUM) available for the 14,5550 acres of county land that are able to be grazed. The revenue generated from grazing fees will amount to $33,645.02, which will be $1,385.02 over last year. The land available for grazing were homesteads that were acquired by the county due to delinquent taxes during the depression. The Federal G...
On Jan. 11, the Valley County Commissioners heard a proposal to reduce the number of voting precincts across the county. The county currently has eight voting precincts located in Lustre, Frazer, Nashua, Hinsdale, Opheim, Fort Peck and two precincts in Glasgow. The proposal would eliminate election day voting in the Frazer, Nashua, Lustre, Opheim, Fort Peck and Hinsdale precincts, making...
Last week, county commissioners spoke with Robert Latimer of Omaha, Neb., about the Keystone Pipeline and the possibility of the project continuing. While they remain optimistically cautious, they discussed how the pipeline is projected to proceed should it be approved for construction. Most of the plans in place will likely remain the same with some slight tweaks. The proposed man camps in Hinsdale and by Fort Peck will still be in place, should the project come to fruition. They also spoke about tax impact and were assured that Montana and So...
