After recently announcing they will be accepting bids for a project that will span 1.8 miles of Airport Road, Valley County Commissioners have accepted the offer made by sole bidder Century Paving of Lewistown. Valley County Commissioners had an eventful discussion and decision meeting on June 21. During the meeting, they approved a couple of bids and the appointment of individuals to various county boards. The first bid the commissioners approved was a bid by Perfect 10 Roofing to rebuild the roof on the Courthouse. Their bid of $156,000 was accepted and construction is due to begin in mid-July and be completed in August. The bid submitted by Zerbe Brothers for two tractors was also accepted. A lot of road construction projects across the county are now one step closer to being accomplished after this week’s discussion and decision meeting at the Valley County Commissioners' office. The first project that the commissioners gave the go-ahead on was a bridge over Beaver Creek on Milk River Road, located just west of Hinsdale. Last week during their weekly Discussion and Decision Meeting, the Valley County Commissioners had quite a few things on their agenda. The first item of the meeting concerned county employees purchasing tax liens. During the discussion, Commissioner Bruce Peterson expressed his concerns on the matter, stating that county employees would have inside knowledge and would have the edge on these properties with tax liens on them. This week, Valley County Commissioners approved the purchase of four used Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA) for the fire department. The SCBA’s to be purchased are certified and have a seven-year life span. The equipment will cost $1,600. The commissioners also committed $3,000 to the Valley County Fair Board. Valley County Commissioners would like it to be known that the Milk River Bridge south of Nashua will be getting the deck replaced this summer. Early indications show that the project should take 10 weeks and traffic will be limited to a single lane. During the construction, commissioners warn that the bridge may cause problems with transporting heavy machinery. They also expect that delays of 10 to 15 minutes may occur while the maintenance takes place. The site will have stop lights and flaggers present to assist in directing traffic....
On March 22, Valley County Commissioners agreed upon the hiring of Zach Lypszyc as Assistant County Attorney. Lypszyc has interned with the Valley County Attorney for the last two years. Last week, the Valley County Commissioners were all taken to jail by the Vally County Sheriff’s Department, where they were given a tour. As they were guided through the facility, the commissioners had the opportunity to inspect the changes, updates and repairs that have been made. On Feb. 8 during the Valley County Commissioner Meeting, commissioners agreed to contribute a donation of $1,000 to the St. Mary’s Irrigation Project. The funds will be used to produce a film that demonstrates the need to rehabilitate the irrigation system along the Milk River, and maintaining the dam at Shelbourne Lake, near Glacier National Park. The Valley County Commissioners made the decision to raise grazing fees from $13 to $14.01 on Feb. 1. The increased amount now matches the state’s current rate. The county currently has 2,401 animal unit months (AUM) available for the 14,5550 acres of county land that are able to be grazed. The revenue generated from grazing fees will amount to $33,645.02, which will be $1,385.02 over last year. On Jan. 11, the Valley County Commissioners heard a proposal to reduce the number of voting precincts across the county. The county currently has eight voting precincts located in Lustre, Frazer, Nashua, Hinsdale, Opheim, Fort Peck and two precincts in Glasgow. Last week, county commissioners spoke with Robert Latimer of Omaha, Neb., about the Keystone Pipeline and the possibility of the project continuing. While they remain optimistically cautious, they discussed how the pipeline is projected to proceed should it be approved for construction. Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier formally announced his retirement to the Valley County Commissioners on Dec. 5. He will vacate the position at the end of 2016.
