Take me out to the ball game! As you may or may not know, the Glasgow Reds’ American Legion Baseball program was donated 26 acres of land just west of the old BLM building (now Big Sky Auto Accessories) on Hwy. 2 for a new Legion field. The current field located at Sullivan Park has had issues with flooding, contaminated water and, many, many more problems. It is safe to say the community is due for an upgrade. This new parcel of property will not only be big enough for a new Legion field, but an entire complex, with possibly up to four new f...

The grants are intended for projects assisting young people, the elderly, and infrastructure, explained Glasgow’s Sam Waters, who chairs the Grant Committee. The following groups have received funding thus far: $2,000 to the Allies of Scouting to purchase roofing materials for the dining hall/main lodge and the rest room at Boy Scout Park on the Missouri River, $2,000 to the City-County L...
It was a very well thought out argument at the last Glasgow School Board Meeting on Thursday, April 16. Glasgow Head Start Coordinator Pam Ost spoke out to the trustees about thinking about saving a part of the old Irle School building, to be used as a place for Head Start and other pre-kindergarten programs that may one day become part of the district. Her proposal was to form a committee to report back to the board at the next meeting with recommendations on the two story structure, that would include the kitchen. She spoke to the school...
A Montana Senate panel put about $50 million into the state budget bill last week, after Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock said the budget crafted by House Republicans was unacceptable. The panel added about $25 million in amendments to House Bill 2, the $4 billion state general fund budget for the next two years. The amendments injected some of the money the governor asked for in his budget proposal. The committee also added another $25 million in what’s known as a supplemental appropriation, which covers some debts for the remainder of this f...
The last Glasgow School District Board meeting held a lot of updates about the elementary school construction taking shape. Viewing from the outside, those passing by might notice a roof, walls and windows are all in place. They won't be able to see the daily progress on the inside, but that progress is happening rapidly. The project remains on time and on task at this point, but it was clear there were still some challenges ahead. Glasgow School District Owner's Representative Eric Hulteng repo...
July • While the flood of 2011 is still a topic of conversation, necessary repair work at Fort Peck Dam is ongoing. Even though several repair projects have been completed, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers continues work on the Fort Peck spillway. Consequently the 2011 discharge caused a lot of erosion. The spillway ran for over four months. Downstream dams along the Missouri River are also undergoing flood repairs. The projects, costing around $45 million, are coming closer to completion. • Wh...
January • Has Glasgow really been sucked into some vortex that's dropped the temperatures below zero? The easy answer is no. Tanja Fransen, warning coordination meteorologist at National Weather Service Glasgow, explains that this is actually a low pressure system that came down from the North Pole and brought cold weather with it. The Arctic cold front pushed down farther south than usual, which brought colder than average temperatures to much of the nation. • Resigning one city council sea...
Sometimes a namesake can have more sentimental value and meaning, other times it's about carrying history. The Glasgow school board discussed a possible decision on naming the new elementary school building at the school board meeting that took place on Wednesday, Oct. 8. What would seem like a simple decision, turned out to be more complicated. A survey was open to the public for about a week. The survey asked if the new school would remain Irle Elementary, be named Glasgow Elementary, or become West Side Elementary. The results surprised a...

Unlike some recent Glasgow School Board meetings, it wasn't a packed house at the first board meeting for newcomers John Daggett and Suzanne Billingsley, who won election earlier this month. But as Daggett and Billingsley took the oath of office to join the board, there were several handshakes and hugs as the previous incumbents dispersed and the new board members took their seats. Patt Etchart and Dave Irving were presented gifts and offered thanks for their service as board trustees. Allison...

While the building of the Valley County jail was finished three years ago, some kinks are still being cleared up. The county commissioners were surprised at one point by the water/sewer rates and were looking for a way to lower the bill. But what ended up happening, created more of a mess for both the county and the city. City officials said the building’s 3-inch meter was removed without proper approval, and the replacement meter was reduced in size in hopes for a smaller bill. The action went against city ordinance, which gives the city the r...
By Bonnie Davidson For those in attendance it was a hot topic that was discussed with concern. With several changes in the healthcare industry, community members showed their concern with possible changes at the Valley County Health Department. The public meeting took place on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Valley County Courthouse in the conference room. Over a dozen attended, including County Commissioners Bruce Peterson and David Reinhardt, and Jane Smilie, administrator for the state public...
July • The airline that provides Essential Air Service to Glasgow and other small cities in Montana has decided to leave the state. Silver Airways notified the U.S. Department of Transportation that it will not bid for another two-year contract and will stop flying scheduled service in Montana on Sept. 27. Part of the reason for Silver's departure is the upcoming termination of EAS subsidies to Lewistown and Miles City on July 15, leaving only five cities in the program: Glasgow, Wolf Point, G...
January • The winter storm that hit northeast Montana on Thursday night, Jan. 10, wasn't a surprise. It had been making its way across the state, heralded by the forecasters. But its intensity on Friday brought on the winter grumbles. The storm deserved the term blizzard, with heavy snow that was blown by winds up to 41 mph, causing white-out conditions and drifts reported up to 9 feet deep. The low temperature of 1 degree above zero Friday night translated to about 29 below wind chill. A r...

Sleek drawings and artful computer presentations dazzled the Glasgow School Board on Tuesday as they interviewed three design teams for the $16.8 million school construction project. Each multidisciplinary team had an hour and a half to impress the board with their creativity and competence. The Glasgow project is big, complicated and tightly scheduled. The design teams recognized the opportunity it represents to create a lasting legacy here – one called it a “once-in-a-generation cha...
The newest member of the Glasgow School Board, Mona Amundson, was sworn in at the May 15 meeting. Board Chairman Alison Molvig and Vice Chair Patt Etchart were re-elected to their offices and Kelly Doornek was re-appointed clerk of the board. The Glasgow City Council heard some encouraging words about the old Magruder property, better known as Red Rock Plaza or the Farmer’s Market on the Fort Peck Highway. Long delinquent on taxes, it has not been accepted as a gift from the owners to the city because of suspected soil contamination. Shelli Isle of Great Northern Development Corporation said they have the money to assess the brownfield property. There was probably a 660-gallon underground tank that has been dry forever, but there might be a migratory problems from spills offsite. H...
