The 2021 Milk River Motorsports Demolition Derby was a huge draw to the fairgrounds this year, with the bleachers packed and the announcer several times having to shoo off excited youngsters crowding the fence dividing the dirt arena with the audience area. Jace Hinton won 1st Place. Elizabeth Nyquist won 2nd Place. Taylor Crohn won 3rd Place....
Crazy motocross stunts, wild horses, fair food and a demolition derby are many of the main attractions sure to thrill attendees of the 2021 Northeast Montana Fair starting Saturday. The fair was largely canceled in 2020, due to COVID-19, but is returning this year, sans a carnival. Last year, "we canceled all the big events, the night shows," said Paul McColly, Chairman of the Valley County Fair Commission. "All we did was the 4H and the Open Class entries. Livestock. They put a lot of work...
“We did not take it lightly.” The decision by the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, in conjunction with their partners from the Rodeo Committee and Milk River Motorsports, to cancel this year’s fair concert was a tough one said Executive Director Lisa Koski. Milk River Motorsports and the Rodeo Committee had already canceled their evening events scheduled for this year’s Northeast Montana Fair. With no demolition derby or rodeo planned, the Chamber decided to also cancel the Diamond Rio concert, scheduled to conclude the fai...
John Michael Montgomery promised concert-goers his hits and the chance to show off their singing abilities. And Kentucky-born star delivered on both. The man knows his audience, crooning his "1900s" ballads, and drawing appreciative cheers from the crowd when paying homage to military members with his hit, Letters From Home. Montgomery gave the crowd what they wanted, working his way through his number one hits. From I Love the Way You Love Me to I Swear to the more upbeat Be My Baby Tonight,...
The combined efforts of Milk River Motorsports (MRM) and 28 team entries made for a fun demolition derby at the Northeast Montana Fair August 3. Demolition derbys are a popular event along the hi-line this time of year. Thursday night's show was no exception as spectators packed the stands to take in the action-packed show. Prior to the derby, several area women were driven into the arena and honored as they represented many "tough enough to wear pink" breast cancer survivors. The main event of...
Despite dropping an event and one Herby Derby cancellation, LeeAnn Walls described the Milk River Motorsports Demolition Derby on July 30th as, "having gone rather smoothly." Walls commented that originally they had planned to have the Herby Derby, the Chains and Bangs, and the main Derby, but due to only having a single entry the Chains and Bangs were cancelled. Nonetheless, the stands were near capacity as over 1,300 people crammed in to watch the event. Walls said this was a 500-person...
Emerson Drive started out back in 1995 going under the name of 12 Gauge, but a few years later, after the band moved to Nashville, they discovered that 12 Gauge was already used by a rap group. So they changed their name to Emerson Drive. Under that name they have won numerous country music awards both in Canada and in the US. They are a fairly high-energy group and look like a bunch of athletes as they scamper back and forth across the stage drawing the mostly younger crowd deeper into their ac...
Emerson Drive lead singer Brad Mates spoke to the Courier in anticipation of the Canadian band's appearance with JT Hodges at the 2016 Northeast Montana Fair on July 29. “I've never been to Glasgow,” Mates explained via phone from the road, “but we've been fortunate to travel to every state and province in Canada and the U.S.” In other words, the award-winning country artists will be uniquely primed to form a first impression of the area. Considering his upbringing in Grande Prairie, Alberta, I'm sure he'll find a lot to like. Emerson Drive i...
The sand drags and mud bogs held at the Valley County Fairgrounds this past weekend drew a respectable number of drivers and spectators. The Sunday mud bogs was the most popular event, with nearly 300 spectators on hand to watch the competitors try to make their way through several feet of muck and mire. In addition to local drivers, some of the 20 entrants came from Billings, Plentywood, Raymond, Crane, Great Falls, and as far as Conrad to compete in the races. Curt Stordahl of Conrad made the trip worth his while, finishing second in the...
The latest incarnation of the Milk River Motorsports Demolition Derby saw increases in both attendance and participation on May 28 at the Valley County fairgrounds. Organizers Josh Thompson, Garth Loftsgaard and Rob Brunelle made some date changes and other fine tuning that paid off, with 21 cars entering competition (up from 10 in June, 2015) and more than 700 spectators in the stands. Milk River is currently in its fourth year as the nonprofit in charge of the derby. According to secretary...
Forget dueling pianos. The Johnny Holm Band turned their concert this past Friday night into a true community event with "dueling microphones." The band shared their mikes with several concert-goers, who displayed as much talent as the band and who may have garnered more applause. The act wasted no time in involving the audience in their three-hour-plus long show. After a single song onstage to kick off the performance, Johnny Holm leaped off the stage and finagled several attendees into...
At press time, the 2015 Northeast Montana Fair is concluding with a finale in the way of Tuesday's Milk River Motorsports Derby. Carnival workers will then begin breaking down the midway and rides, many of which, by some accounts, were visibly broken down to begin with. Doris Ozark told the Courier that officials are well-aware of the raised eyebrows regarding rides: "Members of our board have been out there walking around periodically. Carnivals are a hard subject in rural communities. People...
Milk River Motorsports hosted their annual Spring Demo Derby on June 13, at the Glasgow Fairgrounds. While the number of participants was down from last year (29 to 10), the excitement was not. Rocky Thompson of Glasgow commented on the low number, "For only being a 10-car field, the drivers put on a great show for MRM and the Glasgow fans. After a tough final heat, Winston Anderson from Chinook edged out Fred Potter and Brad Olson from Glasgow. If these 10 cars can put on this kind of show, I...
Twenty-five vehicles participated in the Sand Drags and Mud Bogs events last weekend held at the Northeast Montana Fairgrounds at Glasgow. A total of $4,190 was paid out in prize money. Glasgow resident Robert Ordway said of the event: "It was great bonding time for me and my grandson [Zoah Meland-Ordway, 3]. I just wish they would have had more cars. It was good for the kids because they all look forward to the Dash for Cash in the mud." The Sand Drags events commenced at noon on Saturday and...

As the cars made their way into the rodeo grounds a loud popping sound could be heard. It was the kick off to the evening, but unfortunately it was the end for Jeremiah Johnson before it even started. Johnson ended up pushing his car off the the ring. Milk River Motorsports has been hosting the 80's & Up Demolition Derby for several years. As the events unfolded on Saturday, June 14, 25 volunteers worked for the nonprofit group that brings in family events, entertainment and business into the...
Shawn Wersal of Glasgow drove his competition into the ground to win the 2013 Northeast Montana Fair Demolition Derby at the Glasgow Fair Grounds on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Engines roared, metal crunched and mud flew as winners advanced from three heats and a consolation round to the final, leaving behind those who raised white flags of defeat as their cars were beaten into submission or pushed out of the ring. “It was one of the fastest, hardest hitting derbies we’ve had in a long time,” said Judge...
There were close to 10,000 collisions in Glasgow on Saturday. All of them were with malicious purpose as 17 drivers and cars participated in the 80s & Up Demolition Derby at the Glasgow Fairgrounds. With a calcutta immediately preceding the wreckage, and thousands in prize money on the line, the drivers weren’t holding back any steel-crunching punches. Coming out of the twisted ball of metal was Fred Potter, who took the top spot in the finals over second-place finisher and defending champion W...
