This upcoming weekend marks the start of the 75th anniversary of the 1939 Milk River Flood. Until the 1952 flood, it was the most devastating on record for the Milk River valley. The flood started with the snow melt in the smaller tributaries. Some of the worst flooding occurred with the smaller streams. Wagner, west of Malta, had evacuations. The high waters caused a bridge to collapse eight miles south of Malta. Bridge damage in the Hinsdale area closed off the highway. Portions of Hwy. 2... Full story
After lying dormant for 13 years, the Hinsdale Belly Bump tournament has been revived in Hinsdale. Levi Capdeville and Nate Remmick decided this was too good of a tournament to lie buried in the archives so they got together and set it up for last Friday and Saturday at the Hinsdale High School gym to the delight of a couple hundred fans. The teams consist of say, some 2000-03 players, or some 1993-96 players and before. Well, you get the picture. Current high school players are not eligible. Lloyd Jones, Kurt Rosendahl, Art Arnold, Johnny...
With the price of cattle up, a live calf in the fall is close to $1,000. There doesn’t appear to be buyers for the dead ones, so per head fee that is a self imposed tax for a County Cattle Petition is hard to beat for the service you get. In the last few years, with federal funding for USDA Wildlife Services declining the cattle ranchers of many counties are starting to understand the value of having a County Cattle Petition. With the money collected through the Cattle Petition, USDA, Wildlife Services is able to use helicopters they lease f...

Neighbors and residents near Bentonite Road noticed when the trucks started working again in the last few weeks after the deep cold caused a break for Macon Construction of Wolf Point. January • The winter storm that hit northeast Montana on Thursday night, Jan. 10, wasn't a surprise. It had been making its way across the state, heralded by the forecasters. But its intensity on Friday brought on the winter grumbles. The storm deserved the term blizzard, with heavy snow that was blown by winds up to 41 mph, causing white-out conditions and drifts reported up to 9 feet deep. The low temperature of 1 degree above zero Friday night translated to about 29 below wind chill. A r... Full story
Glasgow and Valley County are full of giving people. The community gives in times of need. The children’s Christmas store has been an annual tradition for nearly two decades. The store is all about the season of giving. Children, ages 2 to 14, gathered at the Elks Lodge in Glasgow on Saturday, Dec. 21, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. They weren’t there for their own needs; they were the... Full story

Twenty-two years ago, a retired Army doctor and his wife rolled into Glasgow, wondering if a cow town on the prairie was really a good choice to set up a new practice and a new chapter in their lives. It turned out to be a wonderful decision. Glasgow has been very good to Mike and me, and it is a real wrench to uproot ourselves from the place we have lived the longest. Only the pull of family in Colorado could be stronger than the love of good friends here and life in the beautiful Milk River... Full story
Remember when Glasgow had businesses that did tailoring? Friedl’s Mens Wear comes to mind. It seems that the art of tailoring is rather a thing of the past, but that was a customer service at Friedl’s. You men will have to correct me if I am wrong, but I think when men of the area purchased a suit there it could be tailored to fit you. Not only were the pants shortened if needed, but sleeves could also be shortened or lengthened if excess fabric allowed. Maybe a side seam or two could be taken in or let out, darts added, any of those lit...

Dear Editor: We have recently gone through a bitter conflict and unpleasant reactions to efforts to preserve native, beautifully pristine lands along the upper Milk River in north Montana. A century ago, our most famous historic figure in Montana made a statement that still holds remarkably true for such preserved and remarkable regions. Artist Charlie Russell observed the following: “Guard, protect and cherish your land, for there is no afterlife for a place that started out as Heaven.” That observation applies to the badlands area along the...

Hunters and FWP wildlife managers discussed the slow recovery of deer and antelope from the devastating winter of 2011 and the EHD that came along that summer. They agreed that eagles and coyotes are...
