As election season comes towards a close and voters, who might not have kept up with all the changes in the last few months, might be wondering who made it to the final ballot. As sometimes heated battles have come up between the candidates there have been a few changes. One of the more notable changes that took place on a higher level in our state include John Walsh stepping down from the Democratic candidacy for U.S. Senate after a plagiarism issue that came up and he tried to take the foot out of his mouth after stating that PTSD (Post Traum...
Dear Editor: I'm addressing this letter to big game hunters, both resident and those from out of the area. I'm writing this to ask you to please don't shoot the antlerless whitetail deer in the area between Hinsdale and Nashua, for 5 miles on each side of the Milk River. These deer were hit very hard during the winter of 2010-2011, and then suffered an EHD epidemic that same summer, all of which resulted in a 95 percent die-off. That is the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks' statistic. Since then, the numbers have not appreciably... Full story

While the rains have stopped, the water is still flowing. The record-breaking rainfall isn't quite done causing damage as the waters as of Tuesday hadn't receded under flood levels. But the Milk River was expected to fall below flood stages within the next day. The forecast was for some minor flooding to continue. Disaster and Emergency Services Coordinator Rick Seiler explained Tuesday that officials are waiting for waters to recede before they can fully assess damages from flooding last week.... Full story
John Douglas Garsjo, 57, of Mabank, Texas, passed away Monday, Aug. 11, in Tyler, Texas, from complications arising from a stroke. As Montana always was "home" for John, a memorial service is being planned by the family to be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nashua on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Bonnie Novak officiating. He was born on what was probably a cold snowy day, Nov. 19, 1956, in Glasgow, Mont., home to the large Garsjo family. His parents, Wilma and Victo...
Valley County isn't a stranger to flooding. The occurrence of flooding is about once every two and a half years according to records at the Glasgow National Weather Service. Usually those floods take place in spring as the snow melts into the rivers and creeks that surround the area. This time an unusual amount of rain fell later in the summer, catching everyone a little off guard. A major difference from the 2011 flood is that the waters came fast and are receding quickly. Flood waters in 2011... Full story

His parents, Wilma and Victor Garsjo, had another son, Mike, in April of 1958. They owned and operated the Fort Peck Bar in Nashua. Hinsdale, like many other small villages and towns throughout Montana, is in a pickle. The infamous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warranted that the water being dumped into the Milk River from Hinsdale's sewage treatment facility is unfit to be dumped into the sanitary and sterile Milk River. The wastewater from sewage plants like Hinsdale's has been proven to be 10 times cleaner than the river it is being infused into. A person could drink the wastewater (if you didn't know from whence it came) without suffering any ill effects.... Full story
While work continued on the Glasgow Milk River and Cherry Creek System Wide Infrastructure Framework (SWIF) Plan, revisions from the Army Corps of Engineers were returned to the levee safety committee. The good news that came with it was an extension on the SWIF plan for an additional year to fix the revisions and work on budgeting and funding for repairs and upgrades. At the most recent Glasgow City Council meeting, Mayor Becky Erickson said that they are working on research for possible grant funds to help with the multimillion dollar...
I always look forward to the Fourth of July festivities in Hinsdale. It's a day that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. The parade is one of the better small town parades one can find anywhere, and it had more than 50 entries this year. It's sometime a little disappointing when there is a lack of horses in any Western parade, but Tom and Joy See always take care of that when they bring their team of Fjord horses and stylish carriage to town. The Hinsdale FFA won the grand prize for all... Full story
It was all thrills, spills and chills at the 35th annual Milk River Cowboys Association Rodeo held last Thursday in Hinsdale. It was also perfect weather with no threat of rain. We had a southwesterly breeze blowing which blew the bugs back to Saco where they belong but the announcers, Myron Malnaa and Chris Christensen along with timers Tanya Funk and Jan Marshal got a tad-bit choked-up by the dust created in the arena. There was a near record crowd in attendance but the competitors in a...

Flooding is a concern in the Glasgow area, a concern that has become a reality a number of times over the last century. Only a few years ago, in 2011, a large flood threatened and damaged the area. The disaster caused millions of dollars of damage. The Army Corps of Engineers gave the city of Glasgow two years to complete a plan to fix several issues with the Milk River and Cherry Creek levee that was rated as unacceptable. Glasgow formed a Levee Safety Committee in order to meet the deadline...

They could provide personal background and state why they were interested in being a trustee, what their main focus on the district might be, and what might make them the...
Spirits were raised even though the skies were gray and the wind was cold this week. The Milk River Activity Center broke ground for an additional building on Monday, April 28. The center helps community members with mental and physical disabilities and provides jobs for some of the clients. The $500,000 project has been in planning for over a year. Community support has been big for the project that will allow extra space for clients and a chance for community organizations to utilize the kitch...
The bridge spanning Beaver Creek on the Milk River Road west of Hinsdale was built in 1915 and has been re-planked a few times over the years, but not much else has been done to it in the past 99 years. Countless school bus trips have traversed this structure carrying hundreds of school children into Hinsdale. Ranchers and farmers have used this bridge to move some of their smaller farming equipment, and the occasional herd of cattle from one side of the creek to the other. The Hinsdale... Full story
Hartvik Palmer Garsjo, 93, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 26, 2014, at Prairie Ridge Village in Glasgow. He was born on April 6, 1920, to North Valley County homesteaders, Adolf and Martha Garsjo. His birthplace was the railroad section foreman's house in Nashua. He was reared with seven other siblings, Marvin, Dagny, Alvhild, Helga, Alfred, Ernest, and Victor. While growing up, he attended country schools at Harding (Tomato Can) and Grain. At Nashua High School, he was twice...
A flood watch remained in effect through at least Wednesday afternoon for the Milk River from Glasgow to Nashua, above, where ice jams remain. The flood watch area includes central and southern Valley County, including Glasgow, Fort Peck, Hinsdale and Frazer. It's the result of runoff from snowmelt and ice jams, which can cause the river to rise with little warning. The public is advised to monitor forecasts and be alert for possible future flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to... Full story
