July • While the flood of 2011 is still a topic of conversation, necessary repair work at Fort Peck Dam is ongoing. Even though several repair projects have been completed, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers continues work on the Fort Peck spillway. Consequently the 2011 discharge caused a lot of erosion. The spillway ran for over four months. A crowd large enough to fill a court room showed up on New Year's Eve to welcome the newcomers and to say goodbye to those going out of Valley County Office. A Glasgow native has been making trips up to the area as a civil engineer with plans to develop some land just outside Glasgow city limits. Travis West made an appearance at the Valley County Commissioners meeting to get subdivision plans accepted on Skylark Road. West showed commissioners areas of easement and access road to five lots plotted out near the Ridge Runners Saddle Club building. Dear Editor: I'm addressing this letter to big game hunters, both resident and those from out of the area. I'm writing this to ask you to please don't shoot the antlerless whitetail deer in the area between Hinsdale and Nashua, for 5 miles on each side of the Milk River. These deer were hit very hard during the winter of 2010-2011, and then suffered an EHD epidemic that same summer, all of which resulted in a 95 percent die-off. While the rains have stopped, the water is still flowing. The record-breaking rainfall isn't quite done causing damage as the waters as of Tuesday hadn't receded under flood levels. But the Milk River was expected to fall below flood stages within the next day. The forecast was for some minor flooding to continue. Valley County isn't a stranger to flooding. The occurrence of flooding is about once every two and a half years according to records at the Glasgow National Weather Service. Usually those floods take place in spring as the snow melts into the rivers and creeks that surround the area. This time an unusual amount of rain fell later in the summer, catching everyone a little off guard. A major difference from the 2011 flood is that the waters came fast and are receding quickly. John Douglas Garsjo, 57, of Mabank, Texas, passed away Monday, August 11, in Tyler, Texas. He died from complications arising from a stroke. He was born on what was probably a cold snowy day, November 19, 1956, in Glasgow, Montana, home to the large Garsjo family. The Northeast Montana Fair 2014 Demolition Derby was a success put on by Milk River Motorsports on Tuesday, Aug. 5. Total prize money to the winners was $6,513. Hinsdale, like many other small villages and towns throughout Montana, is in a pickle. The infamous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warranted that the water being dumped into the Milk River from Hinsdale's sewage treatment facility is unfit to be dumped into the sanitary and sterile Milk River. The wastewater from sewage plants like Hinsdale's has been proven to be 10 times cleaner than the river it is being infused into. While work continued on the Glasgow Milk River and Cherry Creek System Wide Infrastructure Framework (SWIF) Plan, revisions from the Army Corps of Engineers were returned to the levee safety committee. The good news that came with it was an extension on the SWIF plan for an additional year to fix the revisions and work on budgeting and funding for repairs and upgrades. I always look forward to the Fourth of July festivities in Hinsdale. It's a day that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. The parade is one of the better small town parades one can find anywhere, and it had more than 50 entries this year. It's sometime a little disappointing when there is a lack of horses in any Western parade, but Tom and Joy See always take care of that when they bring their team of Fjord horses and stylish carriage to town. It was all thrills, spills and chills at the 35th annual Milk River Cowboys Association Rodeo held last Thursday in Hinsdale. It was also perfect weather with no threat of rain. The clients have had the help of community members to grow produce to donate to the local food bank, senior center and Women's Resource Center. Hook, line and sink them. The 15th annual Milk River Catfish Classic took place this past Saturday and saw fishermen from all over the region come to Glasgow for a great day of fishing. The non-profit tournament saw 80 teams register to vie for the first place prize. Cat Classic weekend is coming. Tthe kickoff party will be on Front Street this Friday night, June 6. Festivities will start at 6 p.m in front of the Montana Bar. Highlights include the catfishing social, calcutta auction, and live on-stage music by the band, Trouble Expected. Auzzy's "Cook Shack" will have food available all night for the street dance. While the weather would have held out for the short torch run for the state Special Olympics, scheduling conflicts prevented the ceremony. This week the top 10 from the Milk River Activity Center will travel to Billings to compete in the Special Olympics.
