  • The Disconnect Between Science and Reality

    Ron Stoneberg, Managing Management|Jun 8, 2016

I recently had the privilege of visiting with a couple of ranchers from near the Grasslands National Park (NP) in Saskatchewan, Canada. I heard the amazing story that when cattle were removed from the park, the resident wildlife also left. The decline in grassland dependent birds was very noticeable. In particular, one rancher observed the sage grouse left when the cattle were removed. This rancher was subsequently contracted by the park to reintroduce his cattle to these over-rested pastures. Amazingly, the sage grouse returned to the area gra...

  • George Bros. Go Back-to-Back

    Parker Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 8, 2016

If "Northeast Montana loves fishing" isn't one of the truest statements ever made, I don't know what is. The 17th Annual Catfish Classic hosted 80 teams of two for this year's tournament. Most of the teams consisted of area and Montana residents, with some coming to fish from as far away as Indiana. The teams converged on the Milk River for some fishin' in the dark on Saturday, June 5. After the midnight weigh-ins were all said and done, Glasgow natives Tyler and Ryan George claimed... Full story

  • Counties in the Crosshairs

    Ron Stoneberg, Tracking Bison|Feb 17, 2016

It is interesting to watch the American Prairie Reserve ramp up its public relations effort by bringing out their top gun, Sean Gerrity. His recent letter to the editor perpetuated the myth that bison magically time control their grazing. If this were true, why did Lewis and Clark find such poor condition range land in their travels through this country? Sean, the difference between commercial bison herds and your herd is not numbers but the fact they manage their animals. You will learn, as many of them did, that unmanaged ungulates will...

The act wasted no time in involving the audience in their three-hour-plus long show. After a single song onstage to kick off the performance, Johnny Holm leaped off the stage and finagled several attendees into...

"I will never forget that moment in the blind when she screamed "I just shot my first buck!" and jumped up on me with the biggest hug ever", said Luke. To prepare for her first hunt, McKenna spent some time at the... Full story

    Tess Fahlgren, For The Courier|Sep 23, 2015

The annual Saco/Hinsdale community picnic at the Bjornberg Bridge came off without a hitch on Sunday, Sept. 20. Under the shade of the cottonwoods on the north bank of the Milk River, a lasting tradition stood strong. A long table laden with dishes from every family in attendance split the grass. Beyond the spread of desserts, Mark and Mike Johnson served pork, beef and lamb with Bernie Hart. If the food and company are what draw a person to an event like this, it's the music that keeps you...
