Walking for miles on the Milk River bottom to no avail, the Strommens set up a blind beside an alfalfa field mid-day but counted more turkeys than deer--until her perfect buck walked in. "I will never forget that moment in the blind when she screamed "I just shot my first buck!" and jumped up on me with the biggest hug ever", said Luke. To prepare for her first hunt, McKenna spent some time at the... Full story

  • Sunny Skies at Bjornberg

    Tess Fahlgren, For The Courier|Sep 23, 2015

The annual Saco/Hinsdale community picnic at the Bjornberg Bridge came off without a hitch on Sunday, Sept. 20. Under the shade of the cottonwoods on the north bank of the Milk River, a lasting tradition stood strong. A long table laden with dishes from every family in attendance split the grass. Beyond the spread of desserts, Mark and Mike Johnson served pork, beef and lamb with Bernie Hart. If the food and company are what draw a person to an event like this, it's the music that keeps you...

  • Wall-Eyed: Idle Chatter and Received Wisdom on Area Fishing

    James Walling, The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

The secrets of local fishing here in Valley County are a mystery to me. Thankfully, local sportsman Gene Moore from Lakeridge Motel and Tackle and Marc Kloker from the FWP have teamed-up to provide me with a balanced (if occasionally oppositional) short course on the ins-and-outs of dredge cuts, tempting bait, and local fishing hotspots. This is the first installment. Enjoy! To begin with, I asked Gene for a little gossip and he delivered the dirt along with a touch of the obvious thrown in for good measure. The typical question for customers...

  • Light Snow Pack Underscores Importance Of Stored Water

Marko Manoukian--Co-Chair of St. Mary Rehab Group, Guest Column|Apr 29, 2015

The most glaring number that the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) provided at the March 24 St. Mary Rehabilitation Working Group (SMRWG) meeting in Havre was not the $40 million construction cost for a new diversion structure. It was the fact that the current snow pack in the St. Mary/Milk River system was only at 65 percent. This highlights the importance of a reservoir and conveyance system. Reservoirs were able to capture fall storm events and 2015 early spring runoff. This gives the irrigation project full storage for the season. Without this...
