    Marc Kloker, The Courier|Jul 13, 2016

A popular Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) Region 6 program that allows children and their families to check out free fishing rods and tackle is in full swing again this year. Just in time for summer fishing, FWP staff is in the process of restocking the 46 different location sites across Montana's Hi-Line. The "Kids to Fish" program lets youngsters check out fishing rods and reels and basic tackle, such as hooks, bobbers, and sinkers. Typically, eight rods are at each location, and a...

  • Glasgow Hosts Invitational Swim Meet

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 6, 2016

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team welcomed 280 swimmers over the Fourth-of-July weekend for their annual invitational meet. Events started the morning of July 2 at 10 a.m. after Glasgow resident Hannah Mickelson sang the national anthem for the crowd. Most of the races held on the first day of a meet are preliminary, so it's not unusual to have several heats for a single event. With 11 teams competing, it made for a busy day, but with parents tackling their duties head on and Auzzy's Cook Shack...

  • Running Scotties Settle for Second in Fort Peck

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Sep 30, 2015

A soft September breeze whistled through Fort Peck as young men and women, bedecked in myriad, wild-colored singled, lined up across the Kiwanis Park grass. They crouched low, awaiting the starting pistol's crack. The Scottie boys, riding a three-meet first place streak, and the Scottie girls, on a two-meet run of their own, gritted their teeth, determined to hold fast to the attitude of invincibility through self-improvement which has defined their season thus far. "It was a fast one," said...

  • Running Scotties Rampage to Weekend Victories

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Sep 23, 2015

For Chase Hughes, the weekend was normal - meets in Frazer on Sept. 17 and Sidney the following day afforded him a dyad of opportunities to better his PR and challenge his fellow Scotties to do the same. For his team, though, and its sister squad one and the same, Thursday and Friday's competitions marked a decisive stride into the beating heart of an increasingly promising season. "We're looking pretty good," said Hughes, "we're all healthy, all good." Thursday saw five Scotties - Emily...

  • Picnics Past and Present

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Sep 9, 2015

This coming Sunday, the congregations of Queen of Angels in Nashua, St. Albert’s in Hinsdale, Holy Family in Glentana, and St. Raphael’s in Glasgow will gather for an outdoor Mass followed by a potluck picnic at Kiwanis Park in Fort Peck. As I was perusing my recipe book—recipes I’ve gathered over the past almost 20 years—I was remembering other parish picnics and remembering what dishes I’d taken to share. I’d have 10 times the recipes to look through had it not been for losing my recipes twice to house fires. Not only did memories of a...

  • 47th Annual Governor's Cup to Kick off Thursday

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Jul 8, 2015

For one weekend each July, the fishing world stops to cast a line into the deep-teal bliss of Fort Peck Lake. On July 10-11, the Governor's Cup Walleye Tournament will reaffirm its indelible stamp on Hi-Line summer culture, as it has for the past 46 years. "We used to call it 'Walleye Week'," says Lisa Olk, the executive director of Glasgow's Chamber of Commerce, when asked whether fireworks or fishing takes precedence as the town's preeminent July tradition. "So definitely the Gov' Cup," she be...

  • Wandering Along Wall Street

    James Walling, The Courier|Jul 1, 2015

It was a warm one at Kiwanis Park for the CHS barbeque June 27. Strolling into the gathering at the invitation of the Honrud family (Opheim), I made the acquaintance of Lyle Wall. Head of a fifth generation ranching and farming family in Lustre, Wall remarked that anyone interested in visiting a ranch currently raising the bison for hunting, meat and other products in Northeast Montana could do worse than his Five Diamonds Bison Ranch situated on Wall Street north of the school on the Fort Peck...
