Editor's Note: The Courier sent the same questions to both candidates for the Ward 1 election. Candidate Adam Hooper declined to participate. Current age? 52 How long have you lived in Glasgow? "I have lived in Glasgow for 30 years, but my entire life has been in Nashua and Glasgow." Why should voters pick you? "I could use that old phrase, 'experience.' I have spent eight years on the City Council and feel I have done a really fair job in representing the citizens and taxpayers of Glasgow. I... Full story

In his new position as city of Glasgow Chief of Police, Rob Weber is getting straight to business. "I want to get back to where we were as a community policing department," Weber told The Courier Monday. "Short term goals, there are things we need to work on like policy and procedure and updating that to help us achieve our overall goal." There also is a shortage of manpower currently as two patrol positions are now vacant. "We've got one guy who looks promising, and he needs to go in front of...
Imagine seeing an old dilapidated house. The paint is flaking off; exposing the bare wood siding to the elements. Its gutters are falling off random parts of the roof and the blinds behind the broken windows are in a state of total disorder. This old house has not always been in this condition. Based on its age, it looks to have been originally built in the early 1900's. I am told, houses like these were mail order kit homes offered by companies like Sears and Montgomery Ward from 1908-1940's.... Full story

In 2010 a life-changing event brought me to Glasgow to live with my mom. I was also excited to be near my sister (Lynn Gilbert) and brother-in-law (Ken). At the time I needed their support and soon it became obvious that we all needed each other and just how much the move was "meant to be." I started applying for jobs in Glasgow in June of 2010, and on my trip from Oklahoma to Montana I had a positive response from the Glasgow Police Department. I was so excited – the job sounded right up my a...

In what could be considered a once in a lifetime experience, Dalton Sand of Glasgow and Cole Taylor of Larslan recently found themselves touring the halls of Congress With Senator Steve Daines (R-MT). "I don't think it would be as cool as it was being there without Senator Steve Daines," Sand told The Courier, recounting his time in the United States Capitol rotunda, surrounded by larger than life statues of great American statesman. "It was just us, [Daines] and his staff. It was amazing...
The city of Glasgow is forming a scoring committee to consider the 31 candidates who have applied for the position of Glasgow Police Department Chief. "I want to appoint a scoring committee tonight," Mayor Becky Erickson said during the regular city meeting on August 2. Brelje is a former GPD...

A citizen committee is in the process of being formed to address complaints about youths on dirt bikes disturbing the tranquility of homeowners north of Glasgow. Dirt bikers are a common sight in the undeveloped area between Airport and Skylark roads, and have been for decades, residents say. Now, a large portion of the city owned parcel of land there has been closed to public use due to liability issues and allegedly poor behavior by some riders. That leaves only the 40-acre recreation area one mile north of the city, owned by the Bureau of...
Community ire over the recent disbanding of the former Valley County Refuse District Board was on full display during the April 28 County Commissioner meeting. "To dissolve a board is your last resort," said Kristi Brabeck, Valley County Airport commissioner. "I understand everybody has personality differences. It is like a divorce. You have parents, and you have your child, which is Valley County. So, as a board who works under your guidance at will, I don't understand why it came to this....

The Glasgow City Council has advanced an ordinance to expand the city’s current snow removal ordinance to include measures for the city’s removal of snow from residential and business sidewalks and bill the property owners. Ordinance No. 973 passed unanimously at the council’s Dec. 21 meeting and will head to second reading in January. The ordinance, according to council president Rod Karst, is modeled after the city’s weedy lot ordinance which was passed earlier this year. That ordinance aimed to encourage the grooming and maintenance of city...
Yesterday’s Memories COMPILED BY GWENDOLYNE HONRUD 10 Years Ago Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010 Nick Kolstad loves the outdoors, and fills his drawings and paintings with wildlife images. The 18-year-old’s work was featured at ArtSpot last June. But because he had Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive degeneration of the muscles, he uses a wheelchair and he can’t hunt in the woods any more. Last week, a lot of volunteers came together and granted Nick the wish he applied for two years ago through the United Special Sportsman Alliance. On Friday he...
New Year’s Day is right around the corner and 2021 cannot arrive soon enough. One of the reasons many are looking forward to ringing in the new year is the legalization of recreational marijuana. At 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2021, Montana adults over 21 will be able to send 2020 up in smoke, legally. Montana voters in November approved Initiative 190, which legalized recreational marijuana, and Constitutional Initiative 118, which amends the state constitution to set the legal age of cannabis consumption at 21. Approximately 60 percent of M...
It became the comically contentious subject of 2020, but a two-year effort to change the law in Glasgow to allow for the raising of chickens has failed after being placed before the voters of Valley County. With a 329-vote margin, the people of Glasgow rejected Glasgow City Ordinance No. 971 for hens to be raised in the city limits. The total votes were 1,049 voting against and only 720 voting in favor. The ordinance was spearheaded by Madelyn House, who moved to Glasgow and had hopes of...
