The Scotties added eight personal bests at the Norm Girard North/East Top Ten on Tuesday, 22 at the Gene Nelson Memorial meet in Wolf Point on Friday and another 12 at the Jean Dreikosen Memorial meet Saturday in Glasgow before that event was called early due to inclement weather. Tanae Baker, 1600 meters, and Iris McKean, 3200 meters, earned the...
Opheim's tracksters continued to help propel the Unified Scobey-Opheim track teams to top spots at their final regular season meets this past week. Opheim sent four athletes – Cole Taylor, Bo Anderson, Carrie Taylor and Mandy Fuhrmann – to the Norm Girard North/East Top Ten meet on Tuesday. Carrie Taylor and Fuhrmann helped the Scobey-Opheim girls to first place with 165 points at the Gene Nelson Memorial Friday in Wolf Point and another first place – at the time the meet was called for weath...

Nashua sent two tracksters to the Norm Girard North/East Top Ten meet Tuesday in Glasgow and took their full team to the Gene Nelson Memorial in Wolf Point Friday and Hinsdale's Jean Dreikosen Memorial in Glasgow on Saturday. Tia Dees competed in the girls' discus and shot put at the Top Ten meet while Xander Pugh represented Nashua in the boys' high jump and triple jump. Dees placed fifth in discus with a...
Both the Scottie boys and girls track teams claimed fourth place finishes at the Northern B Divisional meet in Glasgow this past weekend. "I was a bit disappointed in how we finished on Saturday," head coach Tim Phillips said. "I thought we had a pretty good shot to place to third on both sides, but those little things you sometimes need to fall your way, did not." The Glasgow girls earned 62.50 points, fishing behind Malta, 99; Conrad, 83.50 and Choteau, 65.60. The Scottie boys put up 55...
The Glasgow Scottie girls claimed their fourth District 2B Track title in as many years, and the 19th title in school history. The win was not cemented in Scottie history until the final event of the day. "The girls were up by one point with only the 4x400m relay left," said head coach Tim Phillips. "They had a 4 second p.r. To win the event and seal the win! It was extremely exciting day! Kira [Beck], Emily [See], and Ava [Lloyd] kept us in it and Iris [McKean] sealed the deal!" Glasgow earned...
Predictions of inclement weather led to the cancellation of the Jean Dreikosen Invitational Meet at Scottie Field, scheduled for May 8. The lack of the Hinsdale/Saco meet meant that Valley County teams competed in their final regular season meet at the Gene Nelson Memorial Invite on Friday, May 7, where the most the teams had to deal with was the notorious northeastern Montana wind. The Wolf Point track is also the site of the upcoming District 2B/3C Track meet this Saturday, May 15. Glasgow’s teams claimed top slots at the meet as the boys tie...
"It's been a huge whirlwind, with the Saco-Whitewater meet on Friday in Glasgow and the Belt-Fairfield meet in Great Falls on Saturday," Tim Phillips said about his Glasgow Scotties' track and field schedule. "But we really needed to see our athletes in a variety of events, especially the field events." The Scottie coaching staff continues to push their young team to try new and different events, experimenting with finding the best placements for their athletes. The moves are paying off as the...

Glasgow is brimming with Scottie pride this week following the trackster's performances at the State B track meet this past weekend, May 23-25. The Scottie cruiser departed for the 420-mile trek to Kalispell on Thursday, carrying nearly three dozen of Glasgow's best track and field athletes and their support system. Post-season events are typically held several hundred miles away from home for the Scotties, but Northeast Montanan athletes (especially spring sportsters) are a special breed and...
The Scottie Track and Field program continues to dominate the 2B District as it secured a sweep of the district titles for boys and girls in Wolf Point on May 11. The day was another dismal day for weather and the athletes likely struggled to perform at their peak throughout the day, but the kids in Northeast Montana seemed to take it in stride. The proof is in the results. The boys earned their seventh consecutive District title and the girls finished with their third consecutive win....
The Scottie track and field team has been putting in some long hours this past week. According to head coach Tim Phillips, the team has competed in four separate meets in the span of eight days. "It's been a real tough stretch," he said. "But we've also used it as a training tool." Most recently, the Scotties were in Wolf Point for the Gene Nelson Memorial Meet on May 3, then at Scottie Field for the Jean Dreikosen Memorial Meet hosted by Hinsdale on May 4. "We had a really good day on Friday in...

Scottie Field was full of competitors on May 12 as Glasgow hosted the dual district meet for 2B and 3C tracksters. With mild temperatures and just a slight breeze for most of the day, it was a "perfect" day to compete. The Scotties dominated the 2B meet, sweeping both team titles and winning 28 of 34 categories for the day – more than 82 percent of the events. "It's a testament to the kids and to the coaches who got them there," said coach Tim Phillips of the number of kids that advanced to t...

The 2017 District 3C track meet was held May 13 in conjunction with the District 2B meet. Although there was no touching the Scobey teams, Valley County was well represented by area athletes. The Nashua boys brought home second-place honors with most of the team advancing to the district tournament. The Porcupine girls, with just two competitors, finished fourth overall with Taylor Laumeyer winning individual gold in three of her events. Laumeyer also captured two separate meet records with her...
As the fall sports season transitions into the winter sports season, the Courier looks back at the successes of our Valley County athletes. As August came to an end, the GHS Student Council sponsored their second annual color run, which drew 165 participants. The color run benefitted the Wounded Warrior Project. This year, the approximate $4000 raised was earmarked for the Montana Warriors on the Water program. Another relatively new event, the Laser Regatta, was also held the end of August with...
GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER For the fourth year in a row, the Glasgow boys' track team has claimed first place at the district 2B meet. The top tier of the awards podium was decorated with red and white in 11 events, with 23 other placers filling in the gaps. Despite nursing a sore knee, leading the boys to the win was stand-out Benji Phillips with three individual wins and a second-place finish in one event. Head coach Tim Phillips said, "We're really just focusing on competing but doing it...
The Glasgow School Board met in regular session Wednesday, Feb 17. Present were all trustees except the newly sworn in Mike Kaiser, as well as student representative Luke Breigenzer. Breigenzer began the meeting with his student report, which included the introduction of Speech and Drama participants Reece Hunsley and Mariah Holter, who performed (separately) for the panel. Following the brief performances, GHS activity director, Brenner Flaten introduced wrestling coach Jory Casterline and Matt Reyling, who recently won in his weight class at...
There was plenty of hustle and sweat in the first week of the boys basketball practice at Glasgow High School. The boys seemed as giddy as the coaches were, happy that the drop of temperature outside coincides perfectly with the start of their winter sport on the shiny gym floor. However, Scottie boys basketball head coach Norm Braaten is not happy that only 17 boys turned out for the 2015-2016 season. "That's sad for Class B. We need to start involving kids in school basketball as early as 5th...
Glasgow drove the three-plus hours to Baker with an air of progress and possibility at its back. Last weekend's late loss to Glendive dropped the team's record to 0-2, but the performance and the scoreline represented a marked improvement from the opening defeat versus Colstrip, and served only to steel Scottie spirits. The chip in the young squad's shoulder, though, apparently needed further carving. Much to the Glasgow boys' calamity, the maroon-clad unit awaiting their arrival from the North...
'S' words are in season at 1 Scottie Pride Drive. Spring. Scotties. Sports. Startup. The GHS track and field, softball and golf teams opened their spring sports practices Monday. The golfers teed off at 3:45 p.m. at El Cor Del Lanes. Softball players reported at 6 at GHS. And the tracksters, under first-year head coach Tim Phillips, gathered at 3:45, hit the track for some drills and took to Scottie Pride Drive to run the hills. "I'm just excited for the opportunity," Phillips told The Courier....
The Scotties' itinerary for today goes like this. Leave Glasgow at 12:45 p.m. Practice and have lunch in Havre. Arrive in Shelby tonight. When you're on the road to the Northern B Divisional Boys Basketball Tournament – 261 miles of road – you make time to practice. It will be at Havre Middle School. "It will be review, up-and-down stuff for against Rocky Boy," G-Town coach Norm Braaten told The Courier. "Get them loose after sitting on the bus. They're ready to go." It's go time. The Sco...
