Alcohol affects drivers in a way that changes their judgement, depth perception, and the vital motor skills required to drive safely. An impaired driver may think they are behaving normally, when in reality they are not, which can lead to serious and deadly consequences. A high school student does not have much driving experience, and their brain is still developing, particularly the part that affects their ability to make good decisions. A still developing brain mixed with the negative effects of alcohol make it very difficult for a teen to...

A lot of road construction projects across the county are now one step closer to being accomplished after this week’s discussion and decision meeting at the Valley County Commissioners' office. The first project that the commissioners gave the go-ahead on was a bridge over Beaver Creek on Milk River Road, located just west of Hinsdale. After consulting with Great West Engineering Firm, whom designed the plan, the commissioners approved the bid of $717,131.25 made by Tamietti Construction. The county will perform the dirt and road work as w...
Last week during their weekly Discussion and Decision Meeting, the Valley County Commissioners had quite a few things on their agenda. The first item of the meeting concerned county employees purchasing tax liens. During the discussion, Commissioner Bruce Peterson expressed his concerns on the matter, stating that county employees would have inside knowledge and would have the edge on these properties with tax liens on them. The motion passed two to one, allowing county employees to purchase tax liens after they had been made available to the...

This week, I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Joe Horn, one of the three candidates running for Valley County Commissioner, to discuss his experience and views on key issues facing the county. His main concern is taxes and if elected he said he wants to do what he can do to lower them. Joe Horn began his law enforcement career working as a deputy sheriff in Lee County, Iowa. While employed there, Horn bought and sold land and subdivided it. After leaving the Lee County Sheriff's...
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with John Fahlgren, one of three candidates for Valley County Commissioner, to talk about his experiences, and to provide his opinion on certain key issues facing the county. Fahlgren held a position with The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) which provided him the opportunity to collaborate with past county commissioners quite regularly. Fahlgren stated: “In my experience with BLM I had worked with the commissioners here in Glasgow, and it has always been an interesting position. The way the c...
Originally, the plan was to meet with the guys from the St. Marie Fire Department on the afternoon of July 24. I was going to watch them drill and shoot the breeze about a few of them getting their Emergency Medical Technician certifications and some of the challenges they face as a rural fire department in a small community. By July 23, the plan changed dramatically after our firefighters were called to tackle a structure fire by Rose Hill. Typically, this would be a call that Long Run would...

The Valley County Health Department will be holding its first Red Thumb Reminder Day in the Glasgow High School Cafeteria Thursday, March 17. It's not everyday people get excited about going to court, but Friday, Jan. 22 was just a little different. It was the first day of drug court in Glasgow. The courtroom was far from packed, but there were a number of supporters in the audience, as well as many key people involved in the program. Judge Lynn Gilbert, city court judge, presided over the hearing, which boasted four participants. The inaugural session was short and more of a formality, but monumental nonetheless. Judge Gilbert could...
