  • Bearcubs Did Not Disappoint at Season Opener

    Lewis Reese, For the Courier|Apr 5, 2017

The Bearcub track team met in the school parking lot during the early hours of April Fool's Day to share their thoughts on the performances they would give later that day in Glasgow, where they would be competing in their first meet of the season. One athlete texted that they were just down the street and another texted that they would be a few minutes late. It was perhaps not the best start to the season, but one that set the tone for accountability of all track athletes. This year, as agreed...

  • Fall Sports Highlights: Scotties and More

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Nov 16, 2016

As the fall sports season transitions into the winter sports season, the Courier looks back at the successes of our Valley County athletes. As August came to an end, the GHS Student Council sponsored their second annual color run, which drew 165 participants. The color run benefitted the Wounded Warrior Project. This year, the approximate $4000 raised was earmarked for the Montana Warriors on the Water program. Another relatively new event, the Laser Regatta, was also held the end of August with...

  • Track Season Comes to an End for Scotties

    Georgie Kulczyk, For The Courier|Jun 1, 2016

GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER The atmosphere at the State B Track and Field Meet was remarkable. There were all the usual distractions and performances, but they were more pronounced. The starter's gun seemed to crack a little louder - even more so when it popped off twice, signaling a false start. The aroma of menthol was prevalent and athletic tape was in abundance. Tears flowed more freely and celebrations were less inhibited. The state meet also had more defined rules that were strictly...

  • Scottie Grapplers All Claim Podium at State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Feb 17, 2016

The Glasgow Scottie wrestlers did not disappoint at the state wrestling meet in Billings this past weekend. With just four wrestlers on the mat for Glasgow High School, the team placed 7th out of 45 total schools. In addition, all four who advanced to state placed in their weight class and each of them earned All-State honors. According to the Glasgow Scotties Facebook page, with the four placings at state, Gabe Hallock, Cody King, and brothers Mick and Matt Reyling make 260 state wrestling...

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Oct 28, 2015

Glasgow streaked to respective 4th and 5th-place finishes in the boys' and girls' Class B state meet on Saturday. Each field comprised 32 teams, though the standard of excellence set by both the male and female Running Scotties - 1st or 2nd-place in seven of nine 2015 meets for the former; the latter, five of nine- ensured the ride back from Great Falls was a muted, somber affair. Walker Allen (22nd) and Ellis McKean (24th) each crossed the finish line in under 17:20. Merlin McKean (17:47;...

  • Football Undone in Fairfield

    Patrick Burr, The Courier|Sep 30, 2015

A winless Glasgow squad traveled west last Friday to meet the undefeated Eagles of Fairfield. Though they fought to annul the specious indicators which pointed to an impending defeat - comparative lacks of experience, size, and victories - the Scotties failed to translate that effort into a victory, and continue their battle for the season's first tartan W. The Scotties, undeterred by last week's shutout loss which saw a quarterback change and general disarray among personnel, were buoyed in...

  • GHS Senior in the Running for National Merit Scholarship

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 16, 2015

The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Zach Miller, a GHS senior, has been announced as a semi-finalist and could advance as a finalist if certain requirements are fulfilled. What makes this accomplishment extraordinary, according to GHS principal Shawnda Zahara-Harris, is that only 52 of the approximate 16,000 semi-finalists are Montana students. Of those 52, only two are...

The three helped GHS show well in the season opener, with the girls placing first as a team and the boys second. Local Class C schools also enjoyed success at Scottie Field. The girls came so close and the boys gave everything they had and finis...

  • The Veterans

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 21, 2014

It's a generation of soldiers, much different from today. In some ways they share things in common, the camaraderie, the stories of funny instances and the pressures of war. The World War II generation is slowly dying off as the years tick by. This generation seems to share one trait: They speak very little about their time in war. Two Glasgow WWII veterans took a special trip April 27-29. They were selected to go on the Big Sky Honor Flights. Glen Mahugh and Carl "Bill" Bell traveled with an...

July • The airline that provides Essential Air Service to Glasgow and other small cities in Montana has decided to leave the state. Silver Airways notified the U.S. Department of Transportation that it will not bid for another two-year contract and will stop flying scheduled service in Montana on Sept. 27. Part of the reason for Silver's departure is the upcoming termination of EAS subsidies to Lewistown and Miles City on July 15, leaving only five cities in the program: Glasgow, Wolf Point, G...
