  • Controversial Bison Grazing Change Approved for APR

    James Walling, The Courier|Dec 30, 2015

The Bureau of Land Management issued a proposed decision on Dec. 28 approving the removal of interior fencing for the purpose of year-round bison grazing at the American Prairie Reserve's Flat Creek Allotment in Phillips County. The practice has been described as "experimental" in internal BLM documents as recently as 2008. BLM cites APR's "proven track record on both Box Elder and Telegraph Creek Allotments" as justification for the decision. Accompanying BLM documentation asserts, "Removal of...

  • Historic Hot Springs No Longer Sleeping

    James Walling, The Courier|Dec 30, 2015

Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs was discovered in 1922-by a man exploring for oil, as the story goes-and since that time it earned a reputation as, well, having become a little bit worse for wear. Thankfully, the reputedly slimy tiles and smelly sulfur showers are a thing of the past. New owners Dennis and Michelle Simpson took over the Hi-Line hotspot in 2012 and opened to the public on Christmas Day of 2014 with a shiny new look and feel. I entered Sleeping Buffalo this past week with equal...

  • Newton Helms New Documentary

    James Walling, The Courier|Dec 30, 2015

Hometown boy Shawn Newton has penned an affecting documentary segment for the Montana Television Network depicting the raising of Our Lady of the Rockies in Butte. The statue itself is the focus of 30th anniversary celebrations this year, but the story is fresh and captivating. Framed in part as a story of faith, On the Mountain recounts the efforts of a team of unlikely craftsmen, artists, volunteers and minor heroes and heroines as they first conceive a humble vision of a small statue in a...

  • Combs Wins $200,000 Prize

    For the Courier|Dec 30, 2015

Bob Combs was a very dedicated Montana Lottery player for more than 20 years, playing the same games with the same numbers right up until he passed away last January. Due to this dedication to playing his special numbers, his wife Donna continued to play them since his passing. Her commitment to her husband’s passion paid off last week when she won a $200,000 Montana Cash prize on the Dec. 16 drawing. She purchased her ticket at Reynold’s Market in Glasgow. Donna always made sure she got his tickets and usually checked them when purchasing for...

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Dec 30, 2015

It is the time to be thinking of New Year Resolutions. I searched my mind for anything I might remember about these resolutions and the only thing I could remember is the fact few of us keep them for very long. So I decided long ago to not make that effort. I did discover the fact that resolutions for the New Year started some 4,000 years ago. I don’t think many of them were kept for long either, as it seemed most of them had to do with finance and debt. Yes, even then. So my mind has skipped over the resolution issue to other memories. Do y...

  • Resolving to Help Others

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Dec 30, 2015

Another year is ending. Seems like I just get started on a new year and it’s over, leaving me to wonder how it could have flown by so fast. With a new year approaching, people are going over resolutions they want to make - things they hope to do, goals they wish to reach, changes they want to make in their lives. I gave up making New Year’s resolutions a long time ago. Simply because the year ended without my resolutions being accomplished. It wasn’t for lack of trying to keep them. It was more because I’d eventually forget what they were. T...

  • Lines of Communication

    Christina Hillman, Valley County Voices|Dec 30, 2015

I was recently asked to write a letter to the editor of our local newspaper and was provided a template written by a coalition to reduce underage drinking to base my letter. Although well intended, I decided not to use the templates because it didn’t sound like me or reflect the point I wanted to get across, so, I started from scratch and here it goes. The holidays are a time of celebration for all ages and for many, it includes the use of alcohol, whether it be used traditionally or creatively. I myself annually make a big batch of hot b... Full story

  • Social Media Housekeeping

    Mary Honrud, Sowing Notions|Dec 30, 2015

I keep seeing and getting annoyed by memes on Facebook that want you to “type amen” if you love Jesus, and/or to share that meme to “prove” you are “a Christian.” Jesus already knows this. He doesn’t need you to prove it on Facebook by mindlessly sharing a meme. Rather, he wants your actions to show it. Those actions would include helping others, treating your fellow humans decently, and following the commandments to the best of your ability. (And really, many agnostics and atheists perform these same actions.) There are many other memes a...

  • People of Valley County

Paul Tweten, Letter To the Editor|Dec 30, 2015

I would like to clarify some questions regarding the property taxes in Valley County. The Montana State Department of Revenue sets forth the tax formulas and it is a very complex system. To break it down, the amount billed out for fiscal year 2016 (that Valley County would receive) amounts to $3,824,672 and the amount billed out in fiscal year 2015 was $3,746,394. The total increase is $78,278 of which $58,726 is the two voted mills for the library. This leaves a total increase in non-voted tax revenue of $19,552 for Valley County. Have a...

  • Support for VV

Howard Pippin, Letter To the Editor|Dec 30, 2015

I would like to express support for the letters and opinions that have been expressed by Mr. Vaupel in your papers. I don’t have to always agree with him to enjoy a different view. Please encourage him to resume, I understand he has stopped. I think it’s sad when political correctness makes one spend so much time to defend their statements that are not derogatory but just a different outlook. Is it wrong to call a spade a shovel? We know abortion is murder. Do we need to discuss as to what degree? – Howard Pippin Saco...

  • Sources Matter, Unfortunately

    Chris Pippin, Saco Speaks|Dec 30, 2015

While researching on how gun-free zones are not working to curtail mass shootings but exacerbating them, I came to the conclusion that a person can find irrefutable evidence to support either side of this argument. What? How is that possible? Breitbart, a conservative website, has data from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) showing 92 percent of mass shootings are happening at gun-free zones. That data was completed in response of Everytown for Gun Safety producing data that showed 14 percent of the same data. Why the difference?...

  • Glasgow Falls to Sidney in Weeknight Duel

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Dec 30, 2015

Glasgow hosted the Sidney Eagles in a wrestling duel on Tuesday, Dec 22. Leading into the big event with the varsity wrestlers, the middle school mat boys showed off with some scrappy matches of their own. The highlight of the night was the recognition of two longtime wrestlers. Seniors Cody King and Mick Reyling are competing in their last year of high school wrestling for the Scotties. When they stood in the center circle surrounded by their families, the two brought with them 24 years of...

  • Hoop Runs in the Family

Tessa Duncan was the 8/9 year old winner of the Elk's Hoop Shoot for Wallowa County in Oregon this year. Tessa is the 8-year old daughter of Rob and Tamarah Duncan of Wallowa, Ore. Tamarah was an OHS graduate in 1996 and also was an outstanding Viking basketball player so Tessa, who resembles her mother, comes by it naturally. She just had to do a tie breaker as she and another girl tied in the first competition. In the tie breaker, she made 7 out of 15 free throws to win.Tessa goes on to... Full story

  • Dawgs Unable to Douse Flames

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Dec 30, 2015

The high school Ice Dawgs hosted the Flathead Flames Friday, Dec. 18 and Saturday, Dec. 19. From the looks of the official scoresheets, a hockey game broke out during the fight. By the end of two games, Glasgow left the ice with 19 total penalties, 63 penalty minutes served, and two skaters ejected from the game. It would seem that the time spent in the penalty box was a factor in the outcome of the games. However, only three of Flathead's goals for the weekend were scored on power plays. It is...

  • Irle Fifth Grade Gives Back to Community

    Kayla Larson, For the Courier|Dec 30, 2015

December is a very special time of the year for families to spend together in comfort and happiness. This holiday season, Glasgow's Irle Elementary fifth graders set their lists for Santa aside, and placed their energy toward giving back to the community. Sixty-three fifth graders at Irle generously donated non-perishable food items like canned vegetables, macaroni, cereals and hygiene products. Multiple students committed time going from door-to-door in their neighborhoods as well from...

  • Film Shorts: Valley Cinemas, Streaming, The Worx

    D.K. Holm, For the Courier|Dec 30, 2015

It's a Star Wars New Year at Valley Cinemas. Star Wars: The Force Awakens stays on for a third week. It continues to be paired with the lame comedy Daddy's Home, this month's Will Ferrell enterprise. That's probably because there is no other "product," as theater operators sometimes call movies. But the New Year will bring good tidings as well. Coming up as possible VC candidates are The Revenant, the survival western partially set in Montana. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the real life...

Sponsored by HiLine Ford, the Athlete of the Week is most often chosen by Courier staff, but can also result from an athlete being nominated by someone in the community. This week, we take a look back at which athletes made the cut in 2015: January Leinie Hughes, Glasgow girls basketball Daniel Horsman, Frazer boys basketball Jake Kolstad, Glasgow boys basketball Autumn Gault, U19 Ice Dawgs hockey February Matt Reyling, Glasgow...
